Catherine Deveny is an Australian writer and comedian who has previously written for the Australian daily “The Age” and the UK daily “The Guardian.” She is also an outspoken atheist and feminist. Her strong left-wing viewpoints denouncing marriage and motherhood have garnered much criticism including a tweet she posted Sept. 16.
I regard heterosexual marriage as a much more important feminist issue and bigger oppressor of women than the burka.

The inflammatory tweet posted yesterday has already received over 100 replies of people mocking the absurdity of her statement.
Deveny is no stranger to controversial statements. Last November, she wrote an article for The Guardian entitled,“Sorry, but being a mother is not the most important job in the world.” In 2010, after writing for The Age for nine years, she was fired for tweeting “I do so hope Bindi Irwin gets laid,” during a celebrity awards ceremony in Melbourne.
