BBC: Americans Drive Cars 'Not Much Smaller' Than Big Rigs

On the April 30 edition of "BBC World," Justin Webb reported on rising fuel costs and how the increase in prices affect the American public. According to Mr. Webb, many Americans drive cars nearly the size of big rigs, and will need to spend their tax rebate on fuel, thereby doing little for the economy at large. After all, if a big rig tank takes over a thousand dollars to fill, many American cars must face similar costs. [Audio available here] Transcript below:

“Many Americans drive private cars not much smaller than this truck, and the risk is that they use their tax rebate simply to buy fuel, boosting the profits of the oil companies but doing little or nothing for the wider American economy.

John Taylor owns that truck and has to fill the tank. Today was just topping up. A complete refill is over $1,000, double what it was a year ago. Still, as we headed out of Washington, Mr. Taylor gave just a glimmer of hope to America's economic policymakers. Cheered by the interest rate cuts he'll spend the tax rebate frivolously.”

Seriously when you think

Seriously when you think the media couldn't come up with something anymore stupid... they come up with this.

Sorry I still have that Stanley rant at Michael from last night's Office in my head.

"They need to have a course in college called common sense and everyone should take it. Problem is there isn't too many people that could pass or teach it." -my grandfather

double what it was a year ago

Didn't the Democrats take over the Congress just over a year ago with a common sense plan to lower gas prices?

What a joke!!!

Carlos,

Blame it all on the Dems for all your woes! Maybe we should socialize the gas & oil companies since it is a national security issue of immense proportions...Gas profits are hitting all time highs and you're complaining about the price of Gas? Wah, wah, wah!

Syrius

"...the dire consequences to society when people begin to believe that by
renaming someone to erase their humanity opens the door to the
devaluation of everyone's life..."-dscott

Syrius not blaming on teh

Syrius not blaming on teh Dims but that is part of why they were elected.  The promised a change in their first 90 days and what did we get, butkus", so it is fait to blame the Dims for not changing the economy and lowering gas prices like they said they would do.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Syrius, you cannot be serious.

Maybe we should socialize the gas & oil companies...

What, you don't think your paying enough already? So you want to pay far more? Yeah, go ahead and socialize the few remaining oil companies that are still based in this country, and just see what happens to the price at the pump.

You are truly a member in-good-standing of the government-schooled Economic Illiterate Club.

For you information, the oil companies make about eight cents a gallon profit-wise, and they are the ones taking all of the risks in producing it. The government is making far more in taxes collected on that same gallon, yet they are risking nothing to produce it.

This is Economics 099. If you want lower prices at the pump, then increase the supply. If you aren't willing to do this most fundamental thing, then quitcher bitchin'.

What the American people are looking for is somebody who can solve their problems. - Barack Obama, April 27, 2008

Oh come on...  come on...

Oh come on...  come on...  are you serious?  Do you have a link to a video of this?

Justin Webb,

you sure are dead on about this one. Yepper, your average car, SUV or P/U has a 200 to 250 gallon tank attached right there on that there vehiclular. And yepper, it cost us all $1,000 or more to fill em up each time. I would call you an idiot but that just doesn't cut it. In fact, words cannot descibe just how ignorant you really are on this issue. Simply incredible!

The people "boosting the

The people "boosting the profits" of the Oil Companies are the Leftist greentards who have handcuffed the energy industry, thereby tightening supplies while demand goes up.

These types of comments by media members are not just stupid, they're practically criminal.  They want us to blame "Big Oil" - I blame the Leftist Environuts.

Instead of  "No War for Oil"  how about "No Oil For Environmentalists" ?

precisely!

We have an abundant supply of crude in the USA.  It's the church of environmentalism that is causing high prices, and it's PRECISELY what they want, to limit driving and force you to use public transportation.  I say to hell with them.  I'm still going to drive lead footed.

At your own peril of diminishing returns...

mbuel,

Drive it hard, drive it fast...you are the one paying for it at the pump. By the way, it's the global market driving up the prices. As we've sold China & India on the idea that the road to prosperity is by driving a car, we have only ourselves to blame for competing with them on the global market. Zoom, zoom, zoom! Enviro-wackos were against ethanol from the start. Check your facts. Also, policies towards conservation of resources are good things, not bad, for this country. Forcing you to use public transportation? You have a choice between an expensive one or a cheaper one. The good times of cheap gas are over. Time to tighten the belt and figure out a better & cheaper way.

Hardly....must we all "tighten up"?

Gee, choice.  It's a beautiful thing, Syrius.

Sardine can?  Nice big, safe vehicle?

I'll continue to drive a V-8 until someone pries my dead butt out of it.  And when it's time to replace it....haven't decided yet, but definietly another V-8...perhaps a Bimmer, Jag, Escalade, whatever....it'll have plenty of horses under the hood.

Drive it hard, drive it fast....

Blonde,

Keepin' those Saudi princes pumpin' that sweet crude!!!

As long as you don't complain about the cost of filling up, by all means, go for it!

Syrius

Sy,

I could hardly care less about the princes of the house of Saud.

I am concerned, however, about getting away from you liberals....from New York or Chicago...it doesn't matter.

My T-bird will leave your Caddys & Lincolns in the dust every time.

Which is just the way I like it, thank you very much. Ya'll ought to keep your guzzlers in snow country, where they belong.  Away from me....where you dent my doors, clog my roads, and generally annoy me.

American cars?

As in describing a liberal, you overlooked the fact we drive mainly imports...Volvo, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, RR...on our way to Starbucks for a latte! Clogging your roads? I probably pay more taxes to the system than you make in a year. So, get out of my lane.

Silly man

You assume.

Too bad.

Sorry,  where I live there

Sorry,  where I live there are not too many of those cars.  We mostly drive American.  Chevy, GM (same, but I drive a GMC crew cab and it irks me people call it a Chevy), Chrystler, Ford, there are some Saturns and one Jag that I know of.  Oh, and I am in Minnesota.

You wanna play that

You wanna play that way?

I've served 8 years for your lane and my husband has served 25, so get out of my lane.

Syrius, you idiot.  You

Syrius, you idiot.  You mean keeping those Canadian princes rich.  Go back to bed.

Soon to be cattle ranchers

Soon to be cattle ranchers and Wheat Farmers of western North Dakota (My Relitives) unless the left can find an endangerd what-toad or some such nonsense near the Williston Basin that will prevent drilling.

I am SURE some liberal idiot is looking for ANYTHING to prevent exploration for oil there.

Hey Blonde, I am with you,

I drive a Chrysler 300C, it has a nice big engine which I love to use...check it out when you look for your next car.

Vroooom, DDM

I'm totally with you on that thought. Horsepower!

And thus...I am out, night'O.

Catch you this weekend.

Truck stop groupie

If Justin Webb could ever tear himself away from those truck stops he likes to hang out at, he'd realize American's drive cars the size of, umm, cars.

but it fits like a hand in a tailor made glove

for the libs and environmentalists that have convulsions whenever they see a person driving an SUV or (god forbid) a hummer. And especially compared to most European cars (mini coopers, smart cars, peugots) the SUV seems like the size of a tractor trailer. Its just a lovely mixing of liberal slurs against Americans made by the British BS Corporation

I have only ever made one prayer to God, a very short one: O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous. And God granted it - Voltaire

Alaskans see direct results of the Greentards idiocy daily...

First though...by this twits logic, a motorhomes tank would require around, what?...a thousand gallons to fill up? Hmm...what about a school bus? Wow... sounds like the reasoning of a child...a very young child. During Katrina...the BBC had some other twit talking about how the US gov had helicopter gunships flying attack missions against Katrina survivors for looting. They're gonna have to go a very long way to surpass the lunacy of that report.

There are areas up here in Alaska, that have all the characteristics of oil producing land...but we don't know for sure...the Tree Huggin' crowd won't let em' so much as look. No to drillin' the areas where they KNOW there's beaucoup gas and oil. The mosquitoes and biting flies are far more precious. The technology is there. They can drill without killing everything around the well. Been doin' it for years now.

The anti-everything crowd was out in force when the pipeline was being built and the North Slope was drilled. They screamed about how all the Caribou would die. How oil would spill all over everything.

There have been small spills, quickly cleaned up and the Caribou population increased. Alaskans have been getting a Permanent Fund Dividend check for years now...sharing with all citizens of Alaska, profits from the oil flowing through the pipeline.

The Green Taliban is doing a great job of stopping nearly all development in Alaska. Right now they're doing their best to stop a gold mine that would produce for 20 or 30 years. Like the days of the building of the Pipeline, only it would last a lot longer.

No to drilling. This crowd thinks that high oil prices will hasten the arrival of the Messiah...I mean, accelerate the development of alternative energy sources.

We've needed additional refineries in the lower 48 for decades, but permits to build are regularly denied. They're dirty doncha know? The stupidity has no end....

Happy Trails...

"...the risk is that they

"...the risk is that they use their tax rebate simply to buy fuel, boosting the profits of the oil companies but doing little or nothing for the wider American economy."

More and more I'm hearing laments throughout the MsM that we're not going to spend the tax rebate the way we're "supposed to" -- ie. frivilous material goods, vacations, etc.

It's as if the government is alloting us money for a specific purpose and by not using it the way it's intended we're not holding up our end of the deal or something.

It's our money!  It was taken from us via taxes (at least from those of us who pay taxes).  Getting a little bit of it back shouldn't be regarded as some benevolent act by the government.

If I decide to pay down some principle on my mortgage, invest in some stocks or just tuck it away, it's my business.  Not running out an buying a plasma TV isn't a misallocation of resources.

We silly Americans

We silly Americans. We all drive cars that are rated at 300 to 600 horsepower, have ten gear manual transmissions, have 50 to 60 gallon fuel tanks, and can haul 12,000 pounds or more of greenhouse gas producing, fossil fuel powered, climate controlled, blue tooth enabled, satellite ready, remote controlled vacation gear as we travel all across the country, drag racing our tricked-out sleeper cabs at every freeway, highway, country road, and rest stop in America, right?

Yea, right, and Europe is a sub-continent of Australia.

I personally can't stand SUV's

I am not defending what the BBC said at all here because our cars and even SUVs are way smaller than a big rig, but we do have some ridiculously over sized pieces of crap on the roads that are driven by MORONS, and not just any morons, but morons in a HUGE HURRY. What good is it to have a 'hybrid' SUV when it's STILL a waste? Another thing about these SUVers. They RARELY use their turn signal (all 982 of them) The only 'off road' driving they would do is accidentally.. on their flower bed a bit when leaving the driveway.

You heard it here first: it's his business to judge the size of a car you should be allowed to buy.

No one can judge a woman's reproductive termination, but we can judge the size of your vehicle.

Funny how that works.

My advice to melodi metal

My advice to melodi metal is to please get out of my lane if you are driving too slow.  If I want to drive my 4 door diesel pick up I will because I can.  Welcome to America.

By the way, I am not getting a rebate check so why don't you take my money and buy yourself something with a little more pep so you can keep up.

wow thanks free!

Hubby and I scraped in under the salary allowance.

So kind of you to pay off a debt for me. I could have worked a few more hours, saved up the cash, and done it myself, but hey since you offered...

Though I hate to inform you that your money won't be spent on something useful likeclothes from the mall or a big screen TV - I'm wasting it all on a bank. Sorry your well-thought-out scheme isn't working.

If you're ever in Richmond swing by my house and I'll cook you a nice hot meal to say thanks.

Thanks, I feel better

Thanks, I feel better knowing you got it!

You have one of those too?

You have one of those too?  I love mine, I am up to 150K miles on it.

I think most drivers are morons...oops..I guess that includes me

You're just noticing the behavior of the SUV drivers because their vehicles are larger.

Happy Trails...

LOL, might this be some

LOL, might this be some British humour and sarcasm at work? If this was actually meant to be serious then this would have to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I bust out laughing when I read this and rarely comment.

For MM, when you've got two parents and two kids and an in-law or two commonly with you, there's really no way to get by *without* either an SUV or a minivan. And FYI, a lot of the crossover SUVs out there are just as efficient as minivans. The main thing pushing people to larger cars are the *mandatory* child car seat laws. Not that that's a bad thing, but a small child in a car seat takes up just as much seat space as a full-sized adult. If you're commonly going places with your 4 person family and in-laws, the in-laws can't just hold the kids on their laps or squeeze them into the back. They all must be in car seats, properly belted in, *cannot* even have them in the front either. So yeah people need gas guzzling minivans and SUVs with three rows rather than the two row Corollas and Camrys people can get by just fine with in other countries without such extensive and mandatory child car seat laws. Again, not that that's a bad thing, but it does force people into larger cars that drink more gas.

I never had a Brittax Marathon when I was growing up and I'm just fine! lol

I've seen a buncha wrecks...

If I had to haul my kids around, they'd be travelin' in a freakin' tank...damn the mileage. Ever seen what happens to a Geo Metro when it gets tapped by a truck? Trust me. you doan want yur kids in there when that happens.

Until the vast majority of cars are small, (I drive a Toyota Echo.) I would haul my kids in something substantial. no shame in that...

Happy Trails...

excuse me Syrius

in spite of my limited time spent here I can't help but notice you seem to be a repository of lib talking points and rarely make a point. (duuh, one would follow the other) I do have to admit you miss your points in a very well written way.

Welcome to the list

A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.
 -Thomas Jefferson

Any wonder ?

And the MSM/Liberals blame Bush for negative European attitudes toward America?

It reminds me of an anecdote I heard from the daughter of some good friends of ours.  When she was 16 years old, she spent 6 months in Germany as part of an 'emersion' program she'd been participating in.

At school, one of the text books the Germans were using made the absurd claim that "Americans eat fast food three times a day."

In class, she pointed out to her instructor that (1) the statement was false, and (2) she afterall is American, and didn't eat fast food more than once a week back in Arizona.  The instructor told her that she must be mistaken, because the book was thoroughly researched and accurate.

I guess what I find interesting about the article is that it didn't even surprise me that BBC got it wrong.  Their reporting has been shoddy for years, and articles like this are no longer unusual.

Disenfranchised

TotalKaosDave

I've been disenfranchised! I can barely afford to fill up my Ford Excursion! I would just sit at home and eat pancakes but now, thanks to Democrats and their economic fascist policies, I can't afford my syrup...and butter...and flour...and beer...OK, so I drink beer with my pancakes...MY GOD! I'm out of control! I need government intervention to save me from myself...OR government can get its hand OUT OF MY WALLET and out of the oil business!

Wow, I can't wait for government run healthcare.

When We Were Kings

Watching the BBC or other European media attack America in this fashion is akin to watching the last great buggy-whip manufacturer rail against the "evils" of the automobile. Like the buggy-whip manufacturer, the BBC and Europe can't accept the fact that they are no longer the "big dog on the block".

It's time you take your bows Europe, and exit stage left.

PS. Take the BBC with you.

And enter stage right..India

And enter stage right..India and China.

Chinese SUV's? Sweet!

Just think about all those SUV sales that will be possible in India and China very soon! That’s over a billion possible sales of Hummers and Ford Explorers, let alone Dodge Caravans! Sweet! And they're not signatories of the Kyoto Protocol. That means hundreds of billions of gallons of Exxon gasoline made and sold overseas every single year. Even Sweeter! They don't even have our congressionally mandated emission standards and ethanol requirements. That means an even greater profit for American oil companies who will be selling and building all those refineries, storage, and supply systems in both China and India! That could add up to trillions! Sweetest of all!

Next, the African Continent! Ain't Capitalism great?

"Rile" not "rail"

Excuse-ah-me, while I am begging yous pardons.

My previous post should read "rile", not "rail".

To: Melodic_Metal, Syrious et al...

At least once-a-month, my curiosity gets the better of me and I scour lib websites like The Daily Kos, Democratic Underground and others. I notice that like you, most posters on these websites usually end their posts with an obscure quotation... Is it done to reinforce a point, or is it done to highlight said poster intelligence?

This is not meant to insult. It’s simply an inquiry.

English folks

I don't think English folks have a concept of how large this country is. Their country is a little bit bigger than the state of Virginia. They have very high gas taxes and fuel is probably near 8 dollars a gallon in some places. The high fuel and vehicle costs and population density probably limits the size of automobiles (a British friend of mine, a motorcycle enthusiast, said that he could get a Triumph motorcycle in this country at a sustantial discount to buying one in Britain, when he went home it was cheaper to ship his British motorcycle back to Britain than to sell it here and purchase one there). I hear they have (I have never been there) an efficient and pervasive rail and public transportation system. In other words I don't think they understand our way of driving.

ahussser -- correct. Most

ahussser -- correct. Most English folks knowledge of the US comes from 3 things..

  1. The BBC - more often that not, anti-American
  2. Hollywood movies and TV -- ditto
  3. The Disney that's in Florida -- fantasy

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

The one thing that I can

The one thing that I can never prepare my english and european friends for is the SCALE of the country.
Usually it follows the same pattern.

I live in Arizona and they usually ask me to drop by for lunch in New York or Washington DC. THey just assume that the US is the same size as a european country and that anywhere can be driven or ridden to in three hours.

I guess

Our wonderful country is just a matter of "perspective".

No wonder the rest of the world doesn't get it.

Your comment, tho...is rather enlightening.  I'd never thought of it in precisely that way.

So thanks.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Yes, occasionally I run

Yes, occasionally I run into one of those haughty, superior types at NATO excercises who likes to inform me of european superiority based on the fact that they can use trains to get where they need to go.  They usually claim that their infrastructure is superior based on this claim.

THen I inform them that I too can drive 30 miles north of here, get on a train, and travel on our rail infrastructure to our nations capital.

Then I throw in the kicker, it will take me "THree days to get to my destination at the Pentagon".

THey are usually horrified about that, until I remind them that Germany is roughly the size of Minnesota, and that is why we fly, drive larger vehicles, etc.
