On last night’s episode of Kid Nation, each of the four districts had to chronologically assemble photographs of seven U.S. Presidents. The winning team would become the ‘Upperclass.’ The yellow team won, mainly because of team member Zach. His fellow teammate Kelsey seemed to resent his success. Transcript below:
Kelsey: “We won with the help of Zach but just because he knows his Presidents doesn't mean he’s the best leader. I mean, look at George W. Bush. He’s not smart at all but he won the U.S. President two times in a row.”
Kelsey, when asked in a questionnaire who the worst President in U.S. history was, said the following:
"In my personal opinion, one of the worst U.S presidents could be George W. Bush because he has the craziest ideas for the country that could lead us into danger. For example, he started the unnecessary war with the country of Iraq which killed many U.S. soldiers.”
In an exercise that covered many U.S. Presidents, it’s interesting that CBS only aired this editorial comment. It will be entertaining to watch and see if CBS includes opinions from some of the more conservative children. Next weeks’ episode discusses an ‘environmental crisis.’

Hey Kid.....Ask Pelosi
October 18, 2007 - 16:18 ET by JayTeeAsk Pelosi how SMART is President Bush....
I think you can substitute "Speaker of the House" for "President" and the story line is more meaningful.
But then, I don't think KID Nation has any business getting political.......other than if Hillary is elected we might have a problem of Survival.

No one brainwashed the kid
October 18, 2007 - 17:50 ET by balboaNo one brainwashed the kid to specifically "bash" the president on TV. Obviously the kid picked up this sentiment from his parents, he voiced it on the show, and CBS aired it. It's not a conspiracy.

October 18, 2007 - 18:14 ET by balboaI'm guessing. That's where most kids her age pick up any notion of politics (except for Alex P. Keaton, of course).
Wherever she picked it up, I doubt it was fed to her so that in case she was picked to be on a reality TV show for kids and there was a contest involving presidents she would be ready to give her opinion on Bush.
Why did they highlight this instead of some kid saying "Bush is great"? Maybe no one said that. Maybe the kid that did wasn't central to the contest being shown. Or maybe...it's a conspiracy!!!

In bal's defense, most
October 19, 2007 - 08:52 ET by BinxlyIn bal's defense, most children who have strong political beliefs, it is usually due to parenting. That said, there IS too much force feeding of only one idea to kids. There is a gross shortage of successful conservative role models for children. Yet turn on cartoon network, nickelodeon, or any other children's program and you'll see topics about global warming, illegal immigration, and basically painting over all the main issues of today with a huge, leftist, rose colored brush.
For example, my little cousin loves Dora the explorer. Now I have NO problem at *all* if someone wants to learn Spanish. We all should shoot for more cultural diversity to grow as people, but this is America and if you want to function and contribute, you should know/learn English. That's just how it is. If you want to be a citizen, GREAT! but do it the *correct* way. Now, because of this show, my 10 year old cousin, devoid of any real basis of knowledge, is now thanks to Dora, saying that those who are against illegal immigration are 'mean, old men.' She also thinks Americans should have to learn English and Spanish. Again, I have no problem with a hispanic protagonist or even a show that PROMOTES cultural diversity and educates children on another nation or nationality's culture. However, after watching this show with her, it's rediculous at times how biased it is in favor of the 'plight' of illegal immigrants, especially those of hispanic decent.
The problem is, these kids, like all kids including ourselves, want answers. However, UNLIKE adults, most kids still have their innocence intact. That means they are ignorant to such ugly things as bias and the lies of the adult. Most kids with a strong family know parents are trustworthy because #1 they are parents obviously, and #2 they are adults. They are taught to respect adults. They are taught by adults in school. Children are raised with the unspoken construct that adults hold the knowledge and that growth is only gained by 'learning' from them. What if that adult is Al Gore? You think he would give BOTH sides of the AGW argument? or would he merely tell them something ominous like 'without your help, the world will flood! Tell your parents to jump on my carbon credit site and line my pocke...I mean, offset their portion of world-wide, man-made pollution, it is the SOLE reason we rising temperatures and without changing YOUR lives (dont mind my jet or rediculous utilities bill) to save the planet, your children may never know life as you have!'
What about Reid or Nancy the wicked witch of the house? Think they would explain objectively what is going on with the war and foreign policy? hell no! They would simply frame a story much like little red riding hood in which the 'good people' (liberals) take the form of little red riding hood and the BIG BAD WOLF (George Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc, either works) are the ones trying to trick little red riding hood and attempting to eat her. While I would LOVE if Bush or Cheney would actually eat some of these insane and morally-devoid liberals in congress, the problem is that its polarizing. Let the children talk about things CHILDREN talk about. Don't force sex and sexual identity, gender identity, immigration, and foreign affairs into a child's life. There is a time and place for everything, and childhood is for innocence and fun, life is tough, and unless they have that 'adjustment' period in which they are free from worries of such things, we will be raising a new crop of neurotic, over-thinking, misinformed, brain-washed, anxiety-ridden children who will become even more neurotic and anxious as adults (and probably equally misinformed since by then they will be so indoctrinated to ONE idea and ONE way of thinking that approaching ANY topic objectively will be impossible.)
Its just sad because this shows that while liberals do have more control of the television media, they know they still can't win on most of their ideals because they are flawed. However, just like BOTH sides of politics when their side is wrong, the liberals are too proud to conceed and instead of re-evaluating their own ideas and 'going back to the drawing board' to make sure they DO indeed work for our nation, they instead take the easy route.
'If the adults won't listen to our crap, we'll just indoctrinate their children. From birth to adulthood, all it will be is our subtle suggestion of our views via their favorite shows at ad naseum.'
Sad indeed. I hate the media for going after children. Spin the adult television all you want to your political beliefs, left or right, but leave the children out of it...

October 18, 2007 - 16:29 ET by BDIt will be entertaining to watch and see if CBS includes opinions from some of the more conservative children.
Okay, think about this for a second. Can you imagine a conservative allowing their child to attend this?
Liberals, they simply see this either as a noble social experiement of value, or some way to gain "Brittney-esque" publicity.
If you go to the "Kid's
October 18, 2007 - 22:34 ET by LibraryLadyIf you go to the "Kid's Nation" site and read the bios, there are several very conservative kids. Examples:
What world leader do you admire?
Ronald Reagan.
How would you change the world?
Eliminate the terrorism.
How would you change your neighborhood?
Eliminate the bullies.
Is power a good thing?
Power can be good or bad depending on how it is used, but since political power may be abused it should be limited.
What makes a good leader?
A good leader is someone who listens to the people and knows what needs to be done.
Who have been some of the best U.S. presidents, and why?
George Washington. He could have been a king but chose not to be.
Who have been some of the worst U.S. presidents, and why?
FDR. He started social security and other policies that interfere with an individual's right to use his own money as he wishes.
When you become an adult, what do you think will be the biggest problem facing our nation and/or world?
I think terrorism will be the biggest problem.
If you had the power to change one or two things about our country right now, what would it be?
I would lower taxes.
If you could put into place one law that pertains to kids in our country, what would it be?
Let the kids directly receive their education money from the government to spend on their own education. The schools would have to compete for students, just like businesses competing for customers.
Why are some people rich and others poor?
Some people are born into rich or poor families and live the way their parents did. But they don't have to be stuck with how they were raised. It depends on how hard they are willing to work and how free their country is.
Do you believe global warming is a fact or a myth? If you think it is a fact, what would you do about it if you were in charge?
The earth has been getting warmer and colder for thousands of years. It's a natural cycle caused by the sun.
If you were in charge of immigration, would everyone be allowed to enter the country? Would illegal immigrants be allowed to stay?
No & No because it would strain our heath care system too much. In other words, it would cost too much money! However, we could allow more people in legally than we do now since we seem to be able to absorb quite a few.
and another:
What world leader do you admire?
I admire Ronald Reagan, he was a great president.
How would you change the world?
I'd help end world hunger, stop wars, help people learn from their mistakes, and make sure everyone knew about the good news of Jesus Christ.
How would you change your neighborhood?
I'd make it more unique by adding things no other neighborhoods had. I'd also make the people in it more understanding and considerate towards each other.
What have you learned about power?
I've learned that the people in power can really change things for everyone and that the right people in power can make a society function much better.
Is power a good thing?
Power can be a good thing when used in the right way.
What makes a good leader?
To be a good leader, someone has to be able to take charge without being too harsh, make decisions that represent not only their own opinion, but the majority's opinion too, plus they have to stand up for their people and they can't panic if something goes wrong. They've got to help figure out how to make it better.
Who have been some of the best U.S. presidents, and why?
Ronald Reagan did some great things for our county. Abe Lincoln was also a great president who was able to speak the truth.
Who have been some of the worst U.S. presidents, and why?
Bill Clinton cheated and lied. Richard Nixon resigned because he was going to be impeached.
When you become an adult, what do you think will be the biggest problem facing our nation and/or world?
When I'm older, I don't know what will be the biggest problem, but I don't think it will be global warming, it's moved around a centimeter in the last 100 years.
If you had the power to change one or two things about our country right now, what would it be?
I'd lower gas prices.
Why are some people rich and others poor?
Some people are born poor and become rich by working. Some are born rich and some don't work and become poor. Some work hard and become rich.
Do you believe global warming is a fact or a myth? If you think it is a fact, what would you do about it if you were in charge?
I think global warming is real, but it isn't huge. It's only moved ocean levels by a centimeter in the last 100 years. It's not that big.
If you were in charge of immigration, would everyone be allowed to enter the country? Would illegal immigrants be allowed to stay?
Not everyone could enter the country because it could let in dangerous people. Illegal immigrants probably wouldn't be able to stay. Plus we need to have space for everyone, so there should be requirements for people to enter so we only let in good people who will have enough room. The U.S. shouldn't be a can of sardines

Kid Nation
October 18, 2007 - 21:29 ET by doug1950My wife watches that show and asked me to watch it with her last night. The little girl I saw was just a 10 year old, lazy, mouthy brat who has probably never had a good butt whupping. I immediately figured she got her political acumen and work ethics at the house from her dear parents.
Must see TV
October 19, 2007 - 10:00 ET by Immodius390ADTo the people saying....
"the little commie got it from her parents...."
Where should she get it from? I'm sure you've complained at some point about leftist indoctrination in schools...she could just as easily have gotten them there. We'd all be a lot better off if we bothered to teach our kids our views, no matter what they are, instead of just letting them glean whatever garbage they can from the media/et al, which is invariably leftist. My point is that if you object to this girls parents teaching her(brainwashing her, as some have said), then you must object to other parents doing the same...and then what is the alternative? Public schools? What a wonderful job they've done. I'd say the odds are 50/50 that either the parents taught her this, or she has apathetic parents who didn't teach her anything and someone filled the vacuum.
The example of the two conservative kids shows what teaching(brainwashing?...I guess only if you disagree with the ideas) your kids YOUR views can produce. Or just let them go watch TV, whatever.
Also, 'reality' TV is retarded, do yourself a favor and cut the power cord on the TV. Television has absolutely no redeeming qualities, and if you've ever seen a small child staring at one with his mouth hanging open, and a vacant look in his eyes, you'll admit the truth of that statement. Read a book, sing a song.

October 19, 2007 - 10:59 ET by BinxlyI couldn't agree more. I'd have never found my passion for art and music if my parents hadn't been wise enough to cut the TV when I had become glued to it as a kid. Now my art makes me my income and my music keeps me sane. Thank God I had good parents. Sadly not everyone is so blessed.
