C-Word Dropped on C-Span in Reference to Cindy McCain

Photo of Kristen Fyfe.

A woman, calling into C-Span’s morning show Washington Journal used the c-word as part of her reasoning as to why John McCain shouldn’t be president.  Apparently C-Span does not use the 7-second delay for its live programming, though the host of the show did immediately end the call after the obscene word was uttered.

The call came just before 9:00 a.m. on the July 7th broadcast during the show’s call in segment.  The call in segment allows viewers to voice their opinions on any topic.

Female Caller: I have two points. McCain is really too old for this job. We need somebody that can keep up. And number two. He does not have respect for women. He even called his wife a c---.

Peter Slen: (ends call) Let’s move on.

For video of this click here, pertinent clip is at 2:54:36.

To his credit, anchor Peter Slen looked obviously discomfited by the remark and moved quickly to the next caller while scratching his head.  But within seconds leftist Web sites like Democratic Underground had people on message boards cheering the obscenity and its target with posts like “Bless that woman. Let a thousand c–words bloom.”

There are Internet rumors abounding about an alleged 1992 episode in which John McCain used the word in an exchange with his wife.  The rumor appears to have started with a passage from a book, The Real McCain, by Cliff Schecter who sets out to portray an angry man who is unfit to serve as President of the United States.  Schecter is a blogger at the Huffington Post. The passage quotes anonymous sources in a hearsay portrayal of something that happened 16 years ago.

At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c---." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day.

There is no mention of this occurrence in any national news outlets, even though, according to Schecter the three anonymous sources were reporters. And the quote itself seems so preposterous; it is reminiscent of the Edward Klein creation regarding Hillary Clinton, in which he reported that Bill Clinton said he’d "raped" his wife.

The mainstream media have made it a point to disavow smears against Barack Obama. While the caller to Washington Journal was most likely repeating Internet rumors, it remains to be seen whether the anti-smear mantra will be so lavishly applied to McCain.

After all such an outburst fits nicely in the "short tempered, volatile" box into which the liberal media want to stuff McCain.

The "Reasonable" Left

I love it when these loony, loopy lefties make such public pronouncements.  They do far more to dissuade those people in the middle from supporting their causes than they ever could realise.  Those people who were on the fence about an issue suddenly understand that they're really on the side of decency when confronted with such outlandish behaviour.

I know the lefties think it's "creative" and "liberating" to confront old-fashioned concepts like respect and decency, but while they wallow in their externalised personal rebellion against authority figures, they drive a fair number of people away from them.

“Bless that woman. Let a

“Bless that woman. Let a thousand c–words bloom.”

And the leftist wing nuts once again demonstrate the class and dignity they are so famous for. The "remark" by McCain just doesn't have any ring of truth about it at all. But, that doesn't stop the left from repeating it gleefully.

I agree.  I may not like

I agree.  I may not like John McCain, but why would I take that out on Cindy McCain?  Actually, I take that back, I have no dislike towards Senator McCain.  He is an impressive and admirable man.  He's just not my first choice for President.

But I digress.  I really couldn't care less what Cindy McCain is like...She could go around telling small children that Santa Claus is a fraud and making them cry...Or she could spend her every waking moment tending to the homeless.  Its not going to influence my vote.

But what I've seen of Cindy McCain, she handles herself with grace and deserves some respect.

Cindy McCain

lets see what has she done hmmmmm?

She graduated from Southern Cal and was a special-needs
teacher. She has a masters degree in special education. After her Dad died she became involved with his beer distributing firm,is now the chairwoman. Sales have doubled since she has taken over from her father.

They have a 19 year old serving in Iraq , another son in the Naval Academy, a daughter recently graduated from ColumbiaUniv., an adopted daughter in high school, and a son who is the finance guy at the beer firm.

In 1991, Mrs. McCain came across a girl in an orphanage in Bangladesh. Mother Teresa implored Mrs. McCain to take the baby with severe cleft palate. She did so without first telling her husband. The couple adopted the girl who has had a dozen operations to repair her cleft palate
and other medical problems.

She's active with 'Halo Trust' - to clear land mines, provide water and food in war ravaged and developing countries.

She will join an overseas mission of 'Operation Smile', a charity for corrective surgery on children's faces

She has had two back surgeries and became addicted to pain killers.
She talks openly about it which she says is part of the recovery process.
I'm surprised the media is so quiet about her attributes. She sounds more capable than Hillary or Obama. We would really get two for the price of one. A person with business and international experience.
John did work for the firm for awhile when he left the Navy. She, however, has the real business experience.

Cindy McCain is a gracious

Cindy McCain is a gracious woman and would make a fine First Lady. Unfortunately, her hubby has some major problems, the least not being calling his wife a cunt in public. She doesn't deserve the treatment he's given her. She single-handedly raised their children as well as Bridget who they adopted from a Bangladesh orphanage.  I'm far more impressed with Cindy than John.

i've decided she's the one

i've decided she's the one who should be running - I'd vote for her - she has impressive executive experience

Yes, I feel the same way

Yes, I feel the same way about the gracious, intelligent, and fashionable Michelle Obama. I wish she was running instead of her husband.

Why should I believe it?

As the article states, there's no proof that McCain ever called his wife the c word. The story was told in an anti-McCain book, there were no other reports of such an incident. The book's author says his sources were [unidentified] reporters, yet no one ever reported that the incident really happened. Why would anyone believe the story, unless they were looking for something with which to fault McCain?

After all such an outburst

After all such an outburst fits nicely in the "short tempered, volatile" box into which the liberal media want to stuff McCain.

Not to mention those "women hating" (liberalspeak for pro-life) F-ing Republicans.

My husband told me abou it

My husband told me abou it this early this morning...I used to be upset years ago now if I missed the Journal...I now intentionally do not listen at times, just for this very reason...the looney leftists have taken over on the call lines...

I am not going to go any further on this...but anyway, you get the scope of the people that call in...it is disgusting.

Intelligence is nothing...and these are the people that vote...that is what is spooky...

I could go on and on..I will spare you all, most of all, I will spare myself.

... wonder if C-SPAN self-censored???

btw, MsUnderestimated got a mind-numbingly stupid (yet predictable) piece from C-SPAN this weekend. It appears from all the comments here, as well as the DU posters, that C-SPAN is where they spend their "down time" to smack the conservatives around..

 What a bunch of losers.

Wives and family are off limits

Speaking of going after the wives of politicians:

'American Wife' to be released in September (I wonder how they came up with that date) is fictional work by Curtis Sittenfeld that is based on the life of Laura Bush. The following is part of a summary on the writer's own website (curtissittenfeld.com). Can anyone imagine this not creating fictional fodder for the media to attack the President and his family. Being a fictional book allows the press to quote from the book and talk about characters and how events in the story are so much like real life. This reminds me of hearing so many say to me as a child to never say something behind someone's back that you are not willing to say to their face. The media will have fun talking about the Bush family behind the cover of this fictional story but they will only continue to prove themselves to be cowards.

Excerpt - As Alice learns to make her way amid the clannish energy and smug confidence of the Blackwell family, navigating the strange rituals of their country club and summer estate, she remains uneasy with her newfound good fortune. And when Charlie eventually becomes president, Alice is thrust into a position she did not seek—one of power and influence, privilege and responsibility. As Charlie’s tumultuous and controversial second term in the White House wears on, Alice must face contradictions years in the making: How can she both love and fundamentally disagree with her husband? How complicit has she been in the trajectory of her own life? What should she do when her private beliefs run against her public persona?
