Clinton Impeachment Precluded Forceful Response to Terrorism, Filmmaker Says

  • Bookmark and Share

President Clinton failed to move aggressively against Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists in 1990s because he needed to keep his approval ratings high to avoid impeachment, a new documentary on the 9/11 attacks suggests.

A detailed historical account of the tepid U.S. response to terrorist activity throughout the 1990s that lead up to the terrorist strikes on the American homeland in 2001 has been withheld from the public until now thanks to the "Clinton Machine," John Ziegler, the film's writer and director, maintains.

In 2006 the Disney/ABC television network was set to broadcast a two-night, prime time mini-series entitled: "The Path to 9/11" on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11. The critically acclaimed production was based in part on the 9/11 commission report and presents viewers with a dramatization of the events that lead up to the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. in 2001.

The film highlights the U.S. government's ineffective response to terrorism in the 1990s and in the first few months of the Bush administration.

In its original form "The Path to 9/11" offers up a compelling historical narrative highly critical of U.S. government officials who were unwilling to move aggressively against Bin Laden, Ziegler points out. Unfortunately, the version that did finally air was greatly diluted and edited down in an effort to protect the Clinton legacy, he argues.

"Blocking `The Path to 9/11': The Anatomy of a Smear"

features scenes from the original film that were never broadcast and reinserts a number of  edits made at the behest of Clinton operatives, Ziegler said.

The connection between the first attack on the World Trade Center (WTC) in 1993 and 9/11 is one of the major themes explored in the new documentary that went untouched in the mini-series.

The 1993 bombing should be properly viewed as a declaration of war against America that was designed to extract a maximum amount of carnage, according Andrew McCarthy, a former U.S. attorney who successfully prosecuted some of the terrorists responsible for the attack.

Unfortunately, a forceful response that recognized the 1993 WTC bombings and other attacks for what they were was not in the cards because Clinton was hobbled by impeachment proceedings, Ziegler contends.

"I always felt this connection was pretty obvious and there is this great fear on the part of Clinton that people would eventually connect his unwillingness to resign with the fact that our government was unwilling to do what was necessary in the 1990s," he said.

"The bottom line is our ability to prevent 9/11 was greatly reduced by Clinton's impeachment."

When the "Path to 9/11" was originally conceived the intention was to have the mini-series aired each year and even show in schools,  but it is now being censored Ziegler claims.

Disney's unwillingness to make the film available on DVD suggests Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger is working to advance his own political interests at the expense of shareholders, Tom Borelli, a portfolio manager with the Free Enterprise Action Fund suggests. He points out that Iger has been a consistent and steady contributor to Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.).

"This not a matter of suppression," he said. "I think Disney is in collusion with the left wing of the Democratic Party. The company is essentially working against its own profits for political purposes, while also silencing free speech."

Borelli, who appears in the new film, is sending a DVD copy to every board member. The Free Enterprise Action Fund has also filed a shareholder proposal with Disney that calls for the company's political contributions to made more transparent.

Investors stand to lose $40 million on what could be a profitable enterprise because the "Path to 9/11" was shown without corporate sponsorship and because Disney will not release the film on DVD, Borelli explained in a letter addressed to Iger earlier this year.

He raised the issue again at subsequent shareholder meeting.

For his part, Iger denied there was any type of suppression at work and said Disney had decided against a DVD for business reasons. The Disney CEO also characterized "The Path to 9/11" as being "highly controversial."

Borelli responded by saying Iger's answers were "confusing" because Disney helped finance Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11, which was also controversial.

The exchange between Borelli and Iger is available here:

With a new generation coming of age that has no living memory of the 9/11 attacks documentaries like "The Path to 9/11" now have a heightened importance, Ziegler said. But he wonders if other filmmakers will now be willing to plow into the subject matter in light of Disney's treatment of the documnentary and the long reach of the "Clinton Machine."

Yeah, impeachment precluded

Yeah, impeachment precluded forceful responses to terrorism before 1998, too.

Ziegler is a loon.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

1998 was when things really started...

Don't know about all the claims in the documentary, but it probably would have been nice to be able to focus a little better on a response to the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania...

Clinton ...

Oh the good years, where everyone thought there was something going on, when all it was was bumping on the podium.

10k

It certainly seems as if ''someone'' does not want the historical truth to come out. Isn't this the kind of 'censorship' the Leftists always claim the Right is trying to enforce? I did not know that Clinton (either one) still had that kind of power since ''The One'' has hit the scene. Could it be 'FBI files' Hillary collected that still hold the power over these people? Could it be that Iger and Disney (as a company) are that Leftist/Socialist that they do not want the world in on the truth? Do they hate Bush that much (BDS) that they would shelter the people responsible regardless of the consequences?

Too bad I don't have the $23.95 to find out what's going on. Yet, I have a darn good idea already who's to blame and who are the ones holding back the truth.

or option 2: Bill could

or option 2: Bill could have resigned to let someone more capable take over...

country first - right, Bill?

legacy first i guess:)

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

Two Points

1) We don't elect a president to worry about his popularity; we electe a president to protect our freedom and keep us safe from attack so the economy may flourish on its own;

2) Did it ever occur to Bill that defeating people trying to kill Americans would INCREASE his popularity.

NOTE TO OBAMA: Pay attention. Sept. 11 was kinda important, eh?

2 would not work - his

2 would not work - his "popularity" is with America-hating liberal moonbats

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

Hogwash!

"The bottom line is our ability to prevent 9/11 was greatly reduced by Clinton's impeachment."

Hogwash! That's all I have to say.

Kevin!

Put some lipstick on that hogwash!

<insert witty signature here>

Not entirely true...

Even if the impeachment distracted Clinton from his actual duties, the responses before the impeachment issues arose show that he probably wouldn't have responded forcefully anyway. To this day the liberal democrats want to treat terrorism more as a crime than the war that it is.

This is what happens when lawyers are in charge. They want to treat everything as a legal matter.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Unwilling, my eye

"The bottom line is our ability to prevent 9/11 was greatly reduced by Clinton's impeachment."

That impeachment sure didn't reduce Clinton's ability to start a war in Bosnia, Serbia and Kosovo. One wonders what may have occurred if we had projected the same force in Afghanistan that we projected in the Balkan region?

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

Exactly!   And it didn't

Exactly!   And it didn't stop him from starting a non UN sanctioned war with Iraq on the eve of the impeachment vote.

Timeline...

For 6 years, Clinton ignores all terrorist acts against the United States and is un-concerned about Sadaam Hussein, even as Scott Ritter was pleading with him to take action against Iraq because of WMD.  Yes, the very same Scott Ritter who did a 180 after Bush TOOK action.

Congress agrees to vote on articles of impeachment.

On the eve of the vote, Clinton decides it is finally IMPERATIVE to strike Iraq, even without UN support.  The bombings begin.

Congress delays the vote because they don't want to impede our military during a time of war.

Clinton is asked about an exit strategy.  He said there is NO exit strategy and the bombings could go on indefinitely.

Congress calls his bluff and decides to go ahead with the impeachment vote.

Clinton calls off the war, saying that the objectives had been met.

So, he is focused enough to start a "wag the dog" war, but is too distracted to look out for our country's best interests????

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Jerry, "And it didn't stop

Jerry, "And it didn't stop him from starting a non UN sanctioned war with Iraq on the eve of the impeachment vote" is kinda misleading.  Way back to Jefferson and the Barbary Muslims, Presidents have had the power to move troops around and make war.  The funding though comes from the congress and it is darn hard to fight a war without funding.

Jefferson though fought a war with varying degrees of success across the sea without congress approval and funding for 4 years.  After that the funding was approved and shorthly thereafter we kicked Barbary but.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

What about Reagan and the Marines in Beirut?

That , after Carter's fiasco in Iran, is what gave the Muslims encouragement and no fear.

I am a Republican, (I often post here) But Reagan did turn tail and run from Beirut after the Muslims blew away over 200 Marines.

Let's not whitewash that incident.

Agreed...

No President has done what Bush has done.

Popularity be damned, this man has stood in the batters box even while they have been throwing nothing but high, hard ones at him.

Thank you Mr. President, for protecting our country.

++++++++++++++++

Normally I don't root for the disease. But in your case I am willing to make and exception.

The one thing Bush failed miserably to do...

identify the enemy. Saying that this is a war against terrorism is like saying that WWII was a war against Panzer tanks or The "Zero" airplane.

Terrorism is simply the weapon, the enemy is Islam. Nothing will stop them until they are identified by the President.

We are a prisoner to political correctness, this extends to frisking old white ladies at the airport, or that idiot Bush saying Islam is a religion of peace.

Who's whitewashing it?

"Let's not whitewash that incident."

Who's whitewashing it? I have yet to see a post or comment that is an attempt to whitewash anything Reagan did, or failed to do. Reagan himself said that sending those Marines into Beirut was the biggest mistake he ever made.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

You missed my point

The biggest mistake he made was not RESPONDING with overwhelming force after the ragheads blew up our boys.

Sure he lobbed a few shells fron The USS New Jersey  (I think) but basically let them get away with it..this emboldened the Arabs/Muslims..and we are still reaping the rewards of his turning tail today.

So Carter started it, Reagan contributed...(although he did respond to Libya after the German bombing and was generally one to show force when needed)

Clinton rolled over and played dead.

I'm not knocking Reagan, just stating a fact. Most accounts about the rise of Islamic terror blame Carter and Clinton (correctly so) they usually leave out the Beirut incident...this is what I meant by whitewash.

it was a different time and

it was a different time - ME terrorism was localized in Isreal, the IRA was the AQ of the day, and there was a way bigger fish to fry - Reagan stuck a fork in the cold war instead - how many other presidents couldn't achieve that?
Quite a few

Polls

Bill (the perv.) Clinton was right.

Look at Bushes pouplarity. Doing his job first against looking at the polls.

No more attacts since one with Bushes caracter was elected ( Twice)  Stock market hit 14000. Unemployment down most in 20 years. That is till the Dem's to over congress and the MSM got into high gear.

Eat your hearts out you slime in the MSM.

Just so NO ONE forgets.

Just so NO ONE forgets.  Many commentators and politicians thought, during the Clinton impeachment, that he should resign because his ability to govern was imparied by his numerous scandels.

Clinton's people claimed he was so brilliant that he could "compartmentalize" and deal with the scandels and perform his duties.  IMHO, this helped persuade some to vote against impeachment.

Now they claim that performance of his duties were impaired by monicagate.   Can't have it both ways!

Great point, buddyc

I actually had forgotten about how the brilliant Bill Clinton could "comparmentalize" his various duties and mis-steps.

That really sticks a fork in the "distraction" argument, doesn't it?

Great catch!

"... smells like... victory." - Robert Duvall

That tactic didn't work

That tactic didn't work too well since the result was that Clinton got impeached anyway!

Monicagate and its distraction is the reason the left brings up whenever things like Clintons failure to halt genocide in Rwanda or falure to to eliminate Bin Laden are mentioned. It's a smokescreen.

Tear down that wall, Bill Clinton..

Tear down that wall, Bill Clinton..

Most any chance of stopping 9/11 was lost long before the Dec. 19,1998 impeachment.

The first major policy error by the Clinton administration was in not tearing down the wall between Justice and intelligence. For reminders imagine how the coordination between the NSA, CIA, FBI, and the US Attorney's office might have changed history following this gaff:

NYTimes - "Tapes Depict Proposal to Thwart Bomb Used in Trade Center Blast"

FBI Blunders and the First World Trade Center Bombing

There were loud calls following the 1993 bombing of the WTC - the first attempt to bring the towers down - to tear down that wall - and I suspect that one of the players later on, Jamie Garelick, comes to mind.

The impeachment of Pres. Bill Clinton, in Dec. 1998, can't be the event that precluded Bill Clinton from awakening the US public, in 1996, to what was going on when Osama bin Laden declared his Fatwa, "Declaration of war against the Americans Occupying the Land of the two Holy Places."

Bin Laden's second Fatwa against the US in Feb., 1998, in which he extended his order -- calling for American civilians to be targeted -- in concert with the August '98 bombings of the two embassies in Africa (with a massive loss of life) all occurred prior to Clinton's impeachment. It would a little difficult to blame the impeachment for precluding action then also, would it not?

And of course, Clinton did manage to get the impeachment hearing postponed so that he could launch his own personal "shock and awe" against Iraq, in that massive military operation called Desert Fox.

Seems to me that going after Iraq instead of chasing Bin Laden in Afghanistan was an official US policy long before Gov. Bush was elected president. Any surprise that the MSM didn't think of that? (;~/ gary

truth coming out?

Forget the impeachment....remember Sandy Berger stealing and destroying classified 9/11 documents...which the 9/11 Commision was due to see..for which he got a "you've been bad boy" and later  went to work in Hilary's campaign. Remember the cruise missile attacks on the aspirin factory? Remember Reno and Gorelick setting up the "wall" so CIA and FBI could not exchage or even see the other's data on terrorist? Remember Gorelick, long time Hilary best friend, ending up on the 9/11 Commision, not standing before it as a witness? Remember the Clinton/Reno view that we need to treat terrorism as a civil crime. not an act of war? And, one you never heard: Clinton's Sec. of Transportation, Mineta, deep-sixing an FAA/FBI/NWA -developed and initially tested, passenger profiling system ("it's discriminatory" fumed Mineta circa 1993/4...ACLU was overjoyed) that would have stopped 18 of the 19 hijackers?  Zeigler is no loon...just did not have all data or connect all dots
