The Critics' Choice Awards last night gave Hollywood celebrities the chance to congratulate themselves, Barack Obama, and take parting shots at the Bush administration.
Surprisingly, Sean Penn had no political diatribe to speak of after winning Best Actor for his role in the highly politically charged film “Milk.” However, Sarah Silverman and "John Adams" director Tom Hooper took zingers at President Bush. Video here.
Richard Gere, after being honored with a humanitarian award for his work in Tibet, said the following:
I grew up in a time like a lot of people here. It was Vietnam, and we instinctively, innately, felt we could change the world. There was no doubt about it, and we did. We changed he world, and then something happened. It all became selfish... and rancid...and silly... and stupid, and we ended up with the last eight years that we’ve had in this country, which is almost over(applause). We have a few days left, but with this new administration, I think we can recapture that innate instinctive feeling that we really can genuinely care for and love each other...everywhere on the planet. Everywhere, and no one is outside of that embrace. Nobody. Everyone gets it. We don't hold it back from the bad guys...the guys with the wrong color. The guys that live in the wrong places. Everybody gets that.
Selfish and rancid? Apparently, Gere never kept up with the Bush administration’s AIDS effort in Africa, which was given credit by both Bill Clinton and President elect Barack Obama.
Gere may not have visited the Walter Reed wounded military who President Bush visited regulary and inconspicuously. Unfortunately, the secretness of his regular visits will mean regular hit jobs from those like Gere.
Yet again, Hollywood cannot help itself. The Obama administration has yet to begin, and the entertainment industry is already scoping out a place for Obama to sink his feet into at the Chinese Theater.

Richard for-cryin'-out-loud Gere. Geez!
January 9, 2009 - 00:25 ET by rammingspeedThis insipid drip has been making a fool of himself for years, and has had not one bit of the recrimination he deserves. What shocks me is that with all the Jews in Hollywood, you would think there would be some understanding as to how dangerous militant-islamofascists are to the World. You would ALSO expect them to understand what the last 8 years have been about: a war on terror.

People like Gere need to give it a try. Extend your hand and arm to a muslim and it will likely come back without the hand attached. Their simple-minded thinking that we're all the same just shows how devoid they are from reality. We are not the same. There are those who have not advanced up the civilization tree in centuries. There are cold-blooded, pathalogical lying killers out there ready to kill us and eat our children. To them, life is not sacred, nor honor, nor truth. They are raised to believe from childhood their biggest potential in life is fulfilled when you kill yourself for allah.
So, Richard, go live amongst the muslims for a year or two. I would bet money you'd never return -- ah, the thought of your head on a pole leading into a terrorist village in pakistan makes me smile.

The "bad guys" (purposely ambiguous) from Germany and Japan (either directly or indirectly) caused 72,751,900 deaths throughout the world and untold millions more people to needlessly suffer. If we left them alone, how many millions more people would have suffered and died? Prior to the outbreak of the war, we were minding our own business. Japan brought the war to us in both theaters as Germany declared war on us in retaliation of the U.S. declaring war on Japan. Hugs and kisses didn't end that war or any previous war...nor will they end any other conflict with belligerent nations/regimes/megalomaniacs/dictators/etc. We've tried hugs and kisses with the Arabs...look how well they've responded over the years.

January 9, 2009 - 05:57 ET by RR GOPAnd this is why celebrity status mixed with politics is a problem though the MSM ignores it. A Gere or a Redgrave have an international television audience built in with which to broadcast their political views (always leftist views from what I have seen). The average American does not. It would be better if they would pre-record these shows and cut out this nonsense, but they (MSM) won't, because after all, they agree with these sentiments.
As for the statement about Jews above. To me, many are apolitical. Many others are conservative and supportive of Israel, and then there are those who are conservative and don't support Israel for religious reasons. And then there is what seems to be a preponderance of Jews who are Leftists. I haven't been able to figure out why so many Jewish people seem to be so attracted to Marxism. Maybe it's simply because they historically have been successful in academia and the arts and we see that Leftist leaning with non-Jews also.

January 9, 2009 - 08:14 ET by SmartypantsI think many Jews vote with the left, or conversely don't feel welcome on the right, because they see the right as associated too closely with Christianity--and only Christianity. Jews have historically voted Democrat and I think that is a factor as well; there is a strong tendency to vote along the lines of how your parents voted.
I've known plenty of very conservative minorities of different persuasions who, for various reasons, voted almost entirely for Democrats. I do think you're right about apolitical people, though, they do tend to vote for Democrats when they do vote. I think it's because people like this are more impacted by the left wing sound bites the msm provides. People who are detached from politics are more likely to believe that Democrats really do care about the common people and Republicans are only out for "the rich".

Indeed, I used to be a Tibet freedom supporter, but after the Dalai Lama praised communists and the Chinese leadership a year ago, and chastised the West and capitalist as the most horrid system on earth, the scales fell from my eyes. If after everything communism inflicted on his country, Dalai loves commies, his people deserve what they get and Richard Gere is just a commie brainless tool.

Abraham Lincoln
Richard Gere...
January 9, 2009 - 13:25 ET by Kimberly...is a liberal idiot. Truly, his derangement goes back decades, and he is the classic example of Michael Savage's assertion that Liberalism is a Mental Disease.
Penn is getting smarter and has learned to keep his political comments to himself in the early stage awards. If you go off the deep end too soon, you hurt your chances for a prime spot on the Oscar stages when the whole world will be watching. (Witness the year that Tim Robbins went over-the-top on Bush and the Academy granted him and liberal lover Susan Sarandon only a token spot to present a lower-tier Oscar, ironically for editing.)
With that said, yay Clint Eastwood for holding up the conservative end of things.
And, a personal rant: Yes, it's tragic that Heath Ledger accidentally OD'd on prescription meds, some of which he shouldn't have had access to in the first place. Yes, his performance in The Dark Knight was searing and unnerving and downright amazing, a spectactular final finished turn onscreen. But, that performance wasn't a "Supporting Actor" performance. If anything, he's got a larger role in the movie than Christian Bale does, and he's definitely billed as second lead. But because the "Best Actor" field is so full, WB chose to push it as "Supporting Actor", and it's totally killing any chance Robert Downey Jr. has for winning awards for a true "Supporting Actor" performance in Tropic Thunder. (The major awards this year have usually been Ledger vs. RDJ vs. space-fillers 1 through 3, and Ledger's sweeping the year-end awards, losing only once to Josh Brolin in Milk.) The fact that Downey chose to come out of the conservative closet this year makes this clear misplacement of Ledger's performance even more suspect. (Or maybe that's just me.)
Anyway, back to my original point: Richard Gere is an idiot.
What stupid is...
