When a black republican like General Colin Powell endorses a major liberal figure like Barack Obama, it is amazing to see racial vitriol stop at a lefty website like Daily Kos:
Powell didn't just decimate the McCain campaign rationale, however. Powell also offered up an endorsement of Barack Obama in the strongest possible terms, saying that Obama would be an "exceptional president" and that he had the capacity to be "transformational."
The amazing part of all this is that Powell still considers himself a Republican. While there will never be an excuse for his role in supporting the Iraq war, one thing does seem clear: Powell's endorsement today will be a boost for Barack Obama's campaign, and therefore a good thing for this country.
How sweet of Daily Kos. Back in April of 2004 Daily Kos's love did not extend at all for General Powell. In fact, it was downright nasty:
Uncle Tom Powell Stumps for Massah Bush
Yes suh! Yes suh! Right away suh!
Mr. Powell sir, you are a liar and an apologist for a crooked regime known as the George W. Bush administration.
Charges of "RINO", "limp-wristed republican", "Rockefeller republican", and "squish" are likely among the names to be thrown at Powell from the conservative base, but John McCain has been receiving that treatment from the conservative establishment too.
However, unlike liberal references towards black republicans, those names are not racially negative, and if Powell had endorsed McCain, one can bet Daily Kos and others like them would have shot out the same racial slurs like the ones from their 2004 webpage.
It should be noted, that former FCC Chairman Michael Powell, General Powell's son, is a McCain supporter. So, like many other black McCain supporters, unlike his dad, Michael Powell will likely be the continued target of racial slurs from the left.

October 20, 2008 - 11:04 ET by Defector01Your no longer an uncle tom, but the minute you leave and think for yourself, you can be called every name in the book. Let's face it, libs do that with every minority group where people choose not to follow lib orthodoxy. Powell can support whomever he wants, I don't particularly care, but I hope he at least remembers what most of his new leftist best friends were saying about him when his opinion was different.

Was Powell ever a Republican?
October 20, 2008 - 11:27 ET by w0tmFind one speech, one interview, one anything where Powell himself said he is a Republican. He was a loyal soldier following orders without question. Does anyone remember it leaked out he argued with Bush (#1) that we should not go to war under any circumstances with Saddam Hussein to free Kuwait? He predicted massive casualties that would dwarf those of Vietnam. Well, there were but the Iraqi army suffered those "massive" casualties. The few times his views on anything leaked out they all clearly proved he has very poor judgment on governance and military affairs.
How did he reach his high position? Got me! Other than that he was extremely intelligent in being in the right place at the right time and molding himself to maximize himself to be the "man of the moment". He was, and is, extremely well-spoken. Today, most people, while they may not realize it, are proving that "it's not what you say but how you say it". Anything there sound familiar? Like Obama with his world-class speaking ability. People leave his speeches remembering little of the "so general and vague to mean nothing" but ready to enthusiastically vote for him for how he said it!
If he had run for president as a Republican in 1996, he probably would have won! The DNC would have had a stealth Democratic president! He is and never was a "RINO". He is one of the few "moderate Democrats" still left. So this is a non-event. Like "Ted Kennedy Endorses Obama". Yawn.
He played the system to reach the heights he attained. Left to him, Saddam Hussein would today control more than half of the world's oil plus own a dozen "colonies". Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc. Every Muslim country that has oil. He'd, by now, have his nuclear weapons and ICBM's. They wouldn't be make believe today. He'd probably have gone to war with Iran again and, this time, won. Hussein, by now, would rule the Muslim world. And, with that, remote control of much of the entire world. That's what would have happened if Bush #1 had followed Powell's advice.
Back to the question at hand, someone find one word, one speech, one interview, ONE ANYTHING where Powell said "I am a Republican". It does not exist except in the world's media. He was always what he his today. One of maybe three "moderate Democrats" that still exist. Jospeh Lieberman being one of the others. An "endangered species". This is a "Man Bites Dog" story. Nothing more.

I have been saying this for a long time so I agree with you 100%.
Why is it only Conservatives seem to take MLK's words to heart? Especially the part where he says... "to judge a man by the content of character, not the color of his skin". This is exactly what we have lived for years. We don't just talk the talk, we believe! Liberals... not so much.
