The MTV Video Music Awards show was as predictable as watching Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews do their broadcast. Other than celebrating its 25th anniversary and giving Britney Spears a possible opportunity for a comeback, the program was chock full of insults towards conservatives by the show’s emcee, U.K. comedian Russell Brand. As a former MTV staffer, I was surprised by the selection of such an obscure individual to emcee the program.
By the audience reaction, Brand knew he was considered a “nobody” here in the United States, so his immediate course of action was to go political to try and endear himself to the MTV audience:
As a representative of the global community…a visitor from abroad…I don’t want to come across a little bit biased, but could I please ask of you, people of America, please elect Barack Obama, please...on behalf of the world. Some people… some people, I think they’re called racists, say America is not ready for a black president, but I know America to be a forward thinking country, because otherwise would you have let that retarded thinking cowboy fellow to be president for eight years? We were very impressed. It was nice of you to let him have a go, because in England George Bush would not be trusted with a pair of scissors. Very sweet of ya’
Brand continued to make sexual references to Sarah Palin while embarrassing her daughter Bristol and her fiancé Levi Johnston.
What is particularly disturbing is Palin’s children are the demographic of the MTV audience, so the jabs about Bristol’s pregnancy and her fiancé, Johnston, were seen by many of their school friends.
For a European entertainer, breaking into the American market is a huge dream. Brand was booked on to seemingly his first major U.S. venue.
However, he may have really blown his chances with fame in the United States. What kind of European entertainer comes to America and starts insulting half of the electorate? This could only be a “nobody" with no sense.

What's sad is the dude does have some comedic talent. He was the best part of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And he was terrific on Leno when he was promoting that movie.
I think this says more for how truly wretched MTV is these days than anything else.

Useless, perhaps. It's far from being worthless, though. It's definitely not currency, but it has value.

FWIW, I'm currently on business in Amsterdam and people I've met think Sarah is way cool, but I'm not hanging with the likes of the thing in this clip. (Getting looks for letting out a yelp in the hotel restaurant during breakfast with my laptop reading about Matthews/Olbermann going under the bus)

MTV's Web Blog is INUNDATED with complaints!
September 8, 2008 - 05:22 ET by smartestmaninamericaI just went to MTV's web blog. Literally thousands and thousands of complaints. As a matter of fact, it is pretty much 100% complaints.
As a Republican, can I just extend a sincere THANK-YOU to the whacko fringe left in this country? This SHOULD be a Democratic year. You had a first down on the one yard line with a minute to go. And yet, because you are socialists and anarchists and so full of rage against moral society, you blow it.

September 8, 2008 - 05:34 ET by BlazerI know I for one, really give a hoot, what some dainty, English fag from Brittania-stan, has to say on behalf of of America. What a vile, disgusting piece of political theatre this was, MTV should be ashamed, but they wont' be of course.
No surprise that Viacom happens to also be a very large supporter and contributor to Obamas campaign. In keeping with the declarations he made last week concerning the Palins he should denounce these antics and return Viacoms money, pronto.

Disgusting fag butts
September 8, 2008 - 08:35 ET by Sergeant ROCKSo, do you pick up the fags or keep walking? Who's job is it to police up these fags lying around on the streets of America? At least kick them off of the sidewalks for Pete's sake.

September 8, 2008 - 10:31 ET by Mr. BishopIn public, or in private... smoking is something people do. I smoke in public, and I smoke in private. However, for me, private is really on the back doorstep so that I don't smoke directly around my kids to keep them from inhaling the smoke themselves.
What people do with the butts, however, is more a matter of discussion. I field strip my cigarettes and throw the butts in the trash. That is the polite thing to do. I do not smoke around people who don't want the smoke around them. I will intentionally move downwind from people when I am smoking to avoid having smoke fly in their direction.
However, the public is the public. It is a place where anyone can go and enjoy themselves. As such, smoking in public, such as in a park, is as much a person's right, as it is for someone to walk away from the cigarette smoke in that same area.

September 8, 2008 - 10:48 ET by Hero SquadI think it's OK to have fag-friendly establishments here and there. You know, a place where people who enjoy a good drag on a fag can go and not get hassled.
But for me, I prefer my restaurants and bars to be fag free. It just makes for a nicer experience for me and my family.
My wife hates fags. Though I don't think she'd word it exactly that way.

Who Listens to Russell Brand?
September 8, 2008 - 06:49 ET by King of the BritonsHere is a quote from Brand's Wikipedia entry, "He is a former heroin addict, sex addict, alcoholic and has had numerous run-ins with the police, having been arrested 11 times for public indecency.[34] During the time of his addiction, he was known for his debauchery, a notable example being his ejection from The Gilded Balloon, in Edinburgh.[35]"
Why does anyone care what this idiotic loser says about anything? If I wanted to know where to score a fix or how best to pick up hookers, then maybe I might call Brand. If I wanted to show my daughters how not to live - I might show them this loser.
MTV has become the Idiocracy. Seriously, if you want to see the world that MTV lives in, rent and watch the movie, "Idiocracy." It couldn't be more accurate.

September 8, 2008 - 08:13 ET by Copperhead RidgeI love it when the left does things to destroy itself. This will really resonate with American voters, seeing this guy rant and rave about Bush and demand that we vote for Barak Obama. They'll especially be receptive to the "we owe it to the world" part.
Gosh! The RNC should put this on a continuous loop on the web and put it in advertisements.
This is so great. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love it when Europeans get involved in American elections on behalf of the Democrats. Conservatives should think about financing a campaign tour for these skanky looking half-wits to tour the country haranging crowds to vote for Barak Obama.

September 8, 2008 - 09:39 ET by KTLike I said in a later post, MTV is a sewer, it has always been that way after the 90s and It will continue to be that way. I am not into current teenage stuff, it doesn't relate to me and I want to be the best and the brightest, not the other way around.
Well the times they are-a changing and things will only get worse before they get better.
You know, the real irony here is that...
September 8, 2008 - 11:04 ET by JohnMcGrew...the lunatic left boilerplate for the last 40+ years has always been that the mission of the capitalist-controlled status-quo media is to keep the masses enslaved by the system. I was reminded of this a few years ago when I read (perhaps here) of some MTV/Rock-the-Vote type-event rallying the youth of America against Bush’s plan for the privatization of Social Security. I found this truly ironic, since those of the MTV demographic have the most to gain by such reform. As Social Security exists today, they will likely see but pennies of the 15% of their income that they “contribute” into the fiscal black hole that is little more than a government run Ponzi scheme. I could think of no better example of the “adults” at MTV and their parent Viacom exploiting the next generation for their direct and indirect political and financial benefit than that.
So when I see ignorant, spoiled, drug addicted & otherwise out-of-control children paraded in the media on their silly little political temper-tantrums, I just have to shake my head. When these kids inevitably crash and burn and their money is all either wasted or stolen, they will be discarded like used condoms, and MTV will move to the next train-wreck in the making. It’s all there for us to see that it’s the political left in this country that actually has the contempt for America’s youth, and has absolutely no qualms about exploiting them for their own benefit for as long as they’re either profitable or politically useful, before discarding their spent carcasses onto the dump of human cultural debris that they themselves promulgate.
