Estranged family members come out of the strangest places when the lottery is won or someone has presidential aspirations. These quiet individuals find a sense of power never felt before in their lives when a blood relative hits it big or is about to hit it bigger.
In Barack Obama’s case, Vanity Fair reported on a half-brother who was recently discovered living in a small shack in Kenya. Obama’s relative lives on less than $1 a month.
National Public Radio found Cindy McCain’s half-sister, Kathleen Hensley Portalski, who is not only a Democrat but also felt slighted when McCain described herself “as an only child” in a previous NPR report. However, McCain did grow up without other siblings in a two parent household, while her half-sister grew up with a single mother. NPR points out Hensley Portalski received $10,000 from her biological father's estate, while Cindy went on to inherit the family's beer fortune. McCain's father died in 2000, but the report continues to almost blame her for her half-sister’s “modest” past and current circumstances.

Nothing to compare...
August 21, 2008 - 15:50 ET by PewahSo...now we know that Cindy McCain has a poor half-sister who lives here in the U.S. That means that she probably lives in a modest home, has a running vehicle, owns a couple of TV's and other electronic goods, eats out a couple of times per week, etc. On the other hand, Obama's brother lives in a corrugated tin shanty, the size of a small tool shed, in a dangerous area and he eats on less than a dollar a month. Which relative do you think the MSM is going to focus on now in order to shame the candidate? (duh!)

You know as soon as the VF
August 21, 2008 - 16:35 ET by motherbeltYou know as soon as the VF story broke, NPR went looking for all Sen. and Mrs. McCain's relatives to see if they could come up with anything!
As if the two situations are comparable! Well, I guess the difference is the half-sister feels "slighted" while Obama's half-brother has not expressed a desire to come to America.
Hey, maybe they can get Portalski to speak at the Democratic Convention on their "real real Americans" night AKA the "Victims Lineup."
Support
August 21, 2008 - 16:37 ET by Secret ConservativeI can absolutely see how Cindy McCain could have a half-sister she doesn't know and doesn't care about since they didn't grow up together. But at least her husband isn't going to ask the American taxpayers to support that half-sister. In Obama's case, while he has met this poor half-brother in Africa, in fact went there and sought him out twice, I haven't heard that Obama has given a nickel to help that half-brother - in a place where $500 a year would make a HUGE difference in his lifestyle - but instead wants to send hundreds of millions of OUR money to support him and his countrymen. Out of Obama's ENDLESS compassion for his miserable existence.
Give me a break!
Moral Equivalence
August 21, 2008 - 17:04 ET by nkviking75It's the old Moral Equivalence routine. If something embarassing emerges about Obama, the MSM is duty bound to dig up something similar on the McCains, even if the similarity is a real stretch.
