Matthews: Hillary Can't Lose Against Socially Conservative GOP Nominee

January 6th, 2015 9:11 PM

Doubling down on his comments on yesterday's Hardball, MSNBC host Chris Matthews held out that even if Hillary Clinton were to wage a dreadfully-run campaign, there's no way she would lose to a GOP nominee who disagrees with same-sex marriage and is pro-life.

Matthews made the remarks in a segment in which he and his panelists were dissecting a statement that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) made regarding a federal judge ordering every county in the Sunshine State to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples applying for them.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: You know, I've been thinking that if Hillary Clinton runs a great campaign -- I do believe she's going to run -- if she runs a great campaign she's unbeatable. But if she runs sort of a mediocre campaign like last time, she's beatable. But she's not going to lose to a guy like Huckabee on this issue.

JOAN WALSH, in agreement: No.

MATTHEWS: If the Republican Party is dumb enough to plant their feet of opposition to abortion rights and opposition to same-sex marriage, they are going to lose the general election no matter how good--

WALSH: And immigration!

MATTHEWS: --how bad a campaign Hillary Clinton runs. They're going to lose to her.

WALSH: Absolutely!

MATTHEWS: She'll eat them for lunch!
