MSNBC Hypes Minor Romney Gaffe, Edits Video to Remove Substance of Argument, Suggest He's Out of Touch

By Ken Shepherd | June 18, 2012 | 17:28

Ken Shepherd's picture

The next time a liberal friend of yours -- with a straight face -- tells you that MSNBC is concerned with substantive campaign reporting, you can throw this back at them.

The Right Scoop blog has an excellent post today -- be sure to also check out Soopermexican's original post -- about how the network's latest fixation: Mitt Romney mistakenly calling the Wawa convenience store chain "Wawa's" and seeming to be enthralled with their system for obtaining made-to-order sandwiches. Afternoon anchor Andrea Mitchell hinted at a long-since discredited "supermarket scanner" meme about President George H.W. Bush, suggesting Romney was unfamiliar with touch-screens in convenience stores. But missing in the network's fixation on the minor gaffe is the substance of Romney's comments, Right Scoop notes:

He was making a comparison of the government vs private sector, how difficult it was for a optometrist to change his address via the post office vs ordering a Hoagie at Wawas.

[...]

Romney isn’t out of touch here at all. Whether you like his comparison or not, it was absolutely not what was represented by MSNBC.

Here's the unedited video that MSNBC won't show you:

And here's how Mitchell fixated on the trivial to mock Romney:

It's Amazing

Submitted by rman2 on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 5:40pm.

What is amazing is how these idiots think they can edit a clip and it will not come out that it was edited. Long live alternate media. Not many years ago they would have gotten away with this. Not any longer...maybe they will begin to get a clue! Probably not!

They don't care

Submitted by GregE on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 8:48pm.

They know that only a subset of those who see the first clip will every see the real clip, so they're good with a few finding out. It's more than worth it to them.

So Freedom of the Press allows this, but Freedom of Speech doesn't allow slander or yelling FIRE in a store. Interesting. The latter is freedom, requiring responsibility. The first is freedom, requiring nothing.

I miss Wawa

Submitted by JeffC... on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 5:47pm.

I grew up in southern New Jersey and loved Wawa's sandwiches. You order them at a touch-screen and customize them exactly as you want them by adding and deleting ingredients before you finalize your order. That way, your custom order isn't dependent on how you and the person taking your order can understand each other.

I miss them because they don't have Wawa here in southern California. Unless Mitt lived between Bayonne, NJ and Fredericksburg, Virginia, he's probably not familiar with them.

I've only seen one other chain restaurant with a touch-screen ordering and customization system--Carl's, Jr. If you have only lived between Bayonne and Fredericksburg, you've never been in a Carl's Jr.

Wow--adding a "'s" to the name of a business when referring to it--that's just plain ignorance. /sarc

Wawa in Bayone?

Submitted by Free Stinker on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 5:53pm.

I've seen them as far North as Somerville, but typically only see them when you get close to Philly.

Nice places though. They totally kick Quick Chek's arse.

I remember only as far north as Rocky Hill, NJ (and forgot about the one further up US 206 in Hillsborough), but I figured they had more locations in North Jersey, so I picked the first city that popped into my head. It turns out they have a location further north in Parsippany. They're now opening around Orlando, FL.

Andrea Mitchell is a tired old hag

Submitted by frank14 on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 5:49pm.

She has nothing to come home to but a 80 year old husband who passes out during dinner. So she has to obsess about her left wing politics, and it's destroyed her old reputation as a journalist as she has become a Journolist.

So Andrea uses the word "amazing" at the end of her edited clip.

Submitted by richard on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 10:47pm.

...as a mock to Mitt for using the same word, to discribe his statement about how amazing the difference is between private and government busineses operations. She purposely cut the tape as needed to get her snarky "amazing" to show Mitt's ignorance at sandwich ordering.
Well, her reported tape was also edited, by the network, to eliminate her ten seconds of honesty. In all actuality, it continued past her "amazing" statement to include....it's amazing ( how me, a gerbal faced, washed up, desperate for a man, any man, sad excuse for a woman can keep my job on tv when it's next to sickening to watch me report.)
Did I forget to mention that I can't stand this bi*ch?

E-mail to MSNBC

Submitted by IndianaCarl on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 6:27pm.

The following is an e-mail I just sent in to MSNBC.

In reading the headlines on MSNBC today, you see that Roger Clemens was found not guilty of lying. Perhaps Andrea Mitchell needs to appear before Congress to explain why she is lying by omission in reporting on Mitt Romney at WaWa's restaurant. Perhaps you feel that reporting on an item in an unbalanced way to make fun of a Presidential candidate is the proper way to do business. If so, please let us know when you're going to poke fun at 'the private sector is doing fine'. Certainly taking the comment by Mr. Romney completely out of context, you have totally changed the focus of the story from how he's encouraged that the private sector is innovating things and instead attempted to make a mockery of him and his campaign. Of course, you're doing an excellent job of making a mockery of being news reporters by showing liberal bias - exactly as Bernard Goldberg accused Dan Rather. I realize that was CBS - you're allegedly the competition. Perhaps if your organization wasn't so blatantly acting biased you might figure out that here in mainstream America, we have the internet and we can find out the truth about things ourselves - and perhaps you'd figure out why your viewership continues to dwindle.

Or perhaps not. Please continue as you've been doing, and you'll find yourselves relegated to the trash heap of history as a forgotten piece of discarded rubbish. In the meantime, you can be completely certain that when I click through my channels, so long as you continue to show blatant bias, I'll continue to click right past EVERYTHING that your network shows.

God Bless the U.S.A. and the troops that defend her and her Constitution.

Look at this way: My guess is Romney lives in an area that doesn't have any Wawa stores, thus he may not be familiar with them. Second, as has been stated before, there aren't many places with the touchtone ordering screen. Third, I'll put good money that there are a good number of people who are REGULARS at Wawa who call it "Wawa's" (I think we had a couple right here in our comments). Finally, I'll also put good money that our dear Andrea Mitchell (or any of the other MSNBC hosts and anchors, for that matter) spend a lot of time at Wawa or any other place like it where regular people go.
