MSNBC's Bashir Again Complains GOP Push to Defund Planned Parenthood Is 'War on Women'

By Ken Shepherd | January 06, 2012 | 19:00

Ken Shepherd's picture

"The GOP loves a good bogeyman," MSNBC's Martin Bashir complained as he opened a January 6 interview segment on his eponymous program with Cecile Richards, head of the GOP's "favorite target this election cycle," Planned Parenthood.

Bashir proceeded to paint the GOP presidential field, particularly "grenadier Newt Gingrich" as marshaling the forces of misogyny in a "War on Women," as the segment was titled onscreen. The interview amounted to a series of softball questions and leftist talking points to kick start Richards's own recital of left-wing talking points (MP3 audio here):

  • We know that Planned Parenthood provides essential gynecological services to women. So how do you react when virtually every single Republican candidate chasing the nomination takes the opportunity to attack your organization, indeed, wish that it didn't exist?
  • One of the big buzz words from the GOP this year, as you know, is a Personhood Amendment which wouldn't just ban a woman's right to choice, it would effectively ban birth control and in vitro fertilization. It was so controversial, Mississippi voted it down this year. So, the majority of voters in Mississippi would appear to be too liberal for the GOP candidates!
  • You're in New Hampshire now, and as you know, New Hampshire is the site of the next GOP contest. But your organization has been in a funding fight in that state, I believe, since the middle of last year. How effective has the fight against Planned Parenthood funding been, do you think?
  • Just a final question, one of the things that I still can't understand is the hatred and opposition for an organization that spends 97 percent of its total assets, total resources and facilities on basic standard health care for women and three percent, three percent on this, you know, contentious issue of abortion.

Bashir, of course, failed to bring on a pro-life activist to challenge the party line that Bashir and Richards tag-teamed to whip up pro-choice partisans in the audience.

For example, Kristi Burton Brown of LifeNews.com would strongly disagree with Bashir and Richards's 3-percent figure, arguing that when you do the math, it's more like 16 percent of Planned Parenthood resources devoted to the destruction of unborn life.

Leaving aside the controversy over the numbers, who in their right mind would go to a restaurant that poisoned 3 out of every 100 diners, much less 16 out of every 100?

until Bashir lifts up his own skirt and shows us what's under there, he's not qualified to speak for me. And, at any rate, it's not a war on women, women can make whatever choice they want, just means the average Joanne taxpayer is not inclined to pay for it. If our president considers it being "punished with a baby", then I guess I can consider it being "punished for someone else's behavior".

Bashir does not care*

Submitted by cajun2 on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 8:25pm.

Most people like Bashir who push for "women's rights" actually do not care a whit about women. What they care about is putting government in every aspect of our lives. The main goal to these elitist snobs is not for the care or rights of women but rather the "solution" to all our problems is to remove consequences for individual behavior and make it a societal responsibility.  If you follow that thought process, it also includes aiding addicts, dependent population,  mandated health care, perversions become acceptable and "normal" all the while destroying rules, morals, and boundaries.

The purpose of all of this is to devalue a human life as nothing more than government "resource" or source of hedonistic pleasures for the perverted of the world...

To answer everyone in one entry

Submitted by John Francroix Jr on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 10:46am.

Planned provides family planning counseling including contraceptive measures including but not limited to birth control implants, patches, pills, shots, sponges, vaginal ring, cervical caps, male and female condoms, diaphragm, and IUDs.

The whole idea here is for those who can't afford these methods through out of pocket due to lack of insurance, can go to Planned for resources otherwise not available, resources necessary to AVOID conception BEFORE abortion becomes an option (or an afterthought).

Contraception is not male or female only. Contraception is there so the couple doesn't get pregnant; it's not just about the woman. Both parties should be protected. Responsible couples, married or not, and even those less responsible should be aware of the resources available through Planned.

For every man or woman who walks into Planned for contraception, or even contraceptive counseling, presuming the couples uses the contraception properly, a potential abortion may be stopped before fertilization occurs. Would anyone have a problem with Planned if they had no ties to abortion, only focusing on family planning and contraception?

No one going to "Planned" has access to the internet?

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 4:16pm.

We call it Planned because we spend so much time talking about it, that we have to shorten the name. Sometimes we just call it Pleh.

Yep, no one can find any information on birth control implants, patches, pills, shots, sponges, vaginal ring, cervical caps, male and female condoms, diaphragm, and IUDs from doctors or the internet or books or magazines blah blah blah.

Wait a tic.... All those poor poor poor people with lack of access to money have no access to medicaid huh? Phshawwww. Why do we even have it then?

Hey little liar. Why don't you give us some names of poor people that have no access to welfare/medicaid/whatever state insurance plans are out there and still uninsured and have to go to Planned or Pleh as we shortened it to.

One name. How 'bout it. One name of one person so desperately poor, they got laughed at and kicked by all the government insurance programs and they had to go crawling to Pleh for their rubbers.

Oh, you're not aware? Obviously. You seem to have some sort of crush on government run health shams like medicaid. Say you wake up peeing blood. Do you call your local medicaid office and make an appointment to go down to the clinic? Emergency room with no insurance? Planned Parenthood will help you out with that. When Nixon signed into law the Family Planning Services Act with bipartisan support Republicans knew funding the 60 year old company would help to keep people off welfare, a point missed somewhere between people going in for contraception and the off the mark belief that Planned runs as nothing more than an abortion factory.

You're like that Unsane guy but with lots of links. Cajun2 made a false statement. Planned Parenthood does not have a monopoly on abortion using taxpayer money because BY LAW they may not use federal dollars to perform abortions. But to counter that argument I believe the party response to be, "but we know otherwise."

Additionally, while some states ignore abortion clinics as medical facilities choosing not to inspect regularly it is certainly not a majority of states, and there is nothing to back up the claim "Therefore, the majority of PP clinics fail to meet even minimal standards of care for patients."

Now here I go being right again.

Hmmmmm. cajun2 has never been wrong. Hmmmmm. Yet the JFJ troll has already been caught in numerous lies right here on this page. Hmmmmm.

Is cajun2 correct here?

cajun2: What PP has is a monopoly on abortion using tax payer money

Hmmmmm.

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Tait Sye recently told Bloomberg Businessweek that 90 percent of that $363.2 million came directly from the federal government or from Medicaid, a federal-state program. Thus, Planned Parenthood received about $326.88 million from federal programs in 2009.
Although the money from federal programs that went to Planned Parenthood in 2009 theoretically paid for things other than the 332,278 abortions the organization performed that year, the fact remains that Planned Parenthood—an abortion provider--received subsidies from federal programs that equaled about $932 per abortion it performed.

So what other group does abortions and receives government money, LIAR?

Now whatg did the LIAR JFJ say?

John Francroix Jr:: Planned Parenthood does not have a monopoly on abortion using taxpayer money because BY LAW they may not use federal dollars to perform abortions.

Oh liar. Hey liar. Medicaid is a STATE governed program. STATE. Not federal. STATE. You can't make the simplest of statements correct.

Factcheck: Its 2011 fact sheet says it performed 332,278 abortion procedures in 2009. That would mean that roughly one out of every 10 clients received an abortion.

NPR: It is actually a little bit closer to the 10% that Marjorie Dannenfesler suggested, because there are about 3 million patients who come in. There are about 300,000 abortions provided.

NPR: CONAN: And the difference might be that the same woman who later received an abortion also got a pregnancy test and counseling and some other services.

I know what cajun2 said. I was addressing your LIE.

In 2009 3% of Planned Parenthood's total services were abortions. 3% hardly sounds like a monopoly.

LIE LIE LIE LIE

Why were these women coming to Planned Parenthood for their pregnancy tests, considering how they could have gotten a cheap pregnancy test at their local drug store? It certainly couldn’t be for the prenatal care, since so few Planned Parenthood centers offer it (FN According to the Services fact sheet, PPFA clinics provided prenatal services just 7,021 clients in 2009 in the U.S.).

A not so insignificant part of the bottom line

To get a real idea of how essential abortion is to Planned Parenthood, instead of comparing all services equally, one does well to take a look at the relative revenue brought in by each service.

While a pregnancy test may cost $15 and birth control pills may run $15-$50 a month, the average price a woman pays for basic first trimester surgical abortion in the U.S. is about $451, says a recent survey by the Guttmacher Institute (FN Rachel Jones and Kathryn Kooistra, “Abortion Incidence and Access to Services in the United States, 2008, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, Vol. 43, No. 1 (March 2011), Table 6, p. 48).

If so, and all 332,278 abortions performed at Planned Parenthood in 2009 are counted as these first trimester surgical abortions, then the revenue generated by abortion would be $149.9 million. This would represent a full 37% of the $404.9 million in “health center income” Planned Parenthood reported for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009 (FN, Planned Parenthood Federation of American, Annual Report, 2008-2009,”The Promise of Change,” p.29)

Given that Planned Parenthood clinics advertise and perform more expensive chemical abortions with abortifacients like RU486 (average price paid $483) and later surgical abortions (average price of $1562 at 20 weeks), [4] the revenue stream generated by abortion and the percentage of clinic income it represents at Planned Parenthood is probably much higher.

Put all this together, largely taken from PPFA’s own reports, and it is clear that the “3%” figure is a myth intended to mask Planned Parenthood’s deep, wide, and lucrative involvement in abortion.

Every state has a Health Dept designed to provide services and manage programs mandated by Federal regulations or provided by state  funded services.  Each state has its own expansion of programs dependent upon the revenue in each state.   Medicaid is a state funded and managed program.  A % of expenses to the state is reimbursed to that state from the feds.   PP is not a mandated program. It is funded by  federal taxes from ALL American taxpayers.

You will not find statistics about these programs, including medicaid, at one statistical compilation.  You would have to do your research  state by state because each state has the right to define, establish, and fund programs beyond federally mandated services.  For instance, in La, we have a Charity Hospital System with 5 hospitals across the state to provide health care to the poor.  They are NEVER turned away for any reason.  When financial status and income is determined, social workers begin the process of determining eligibility for certain programs.  People with average income, say 30K, and no insurance, are still eligible for treatment and pay a portion of costs of treatment based on income levels.

Some of the patients treated never pay for services,  costs overrun reimbursement  is limited  from the Feds, and end up costing the state millions of state tax payer money. In particular, we are looking at the cost of treatment for illegal immigrants which just has to be written off as a loss. This expense limits the diversity of programs provided to the residents of that state or any state in financial problems.  Texas and La, for instance, manage to provide many programs and medical treatment for the poor at our expense.  States like California,  who have expanded their medical programs to such a degree, that the feds have to bail them out year after year and every increasing amounts because of their nanny state attitude.  The billions that California has been rewarded from the Feds is Federal taxpayer money.  Which means, La has to pay a portion of California's stupidity which limits what tax payers can afford in La.

Try to understand the complexities of any federally mandated program.  It is immense and expensive.  You did state that it was all about the money.  So why should tax payers pay for a private company   at the expense of  costly medical care to state residents?

Your one line talking points is typical liberal bs.  It is without facts or substance and lacks true understanding of the myriad complexities of dealing with the massive bureaucratic boondoggle known as THE  FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

Submitted by Liberallies on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 5:22pm.

John Francroix Jr.,

is this the type of counseling you claim Planned Parenthood does?

How about this type of counseling from Planned Parenthood?

Nah, it has to be this type of counseling from Planned Parenthood that you support, right?

Maybe you are referring to the book, It's Perfectly Normal, which Planned Parenthood passes out in its pro-murder of babies conferences to children in 4th grade and above. This book has counseling on sexual positions, homosexual sex, amongst other advice along with sexually explicit pictures. Sadly, and radically, many on the Left defend this book as normal, despite the pornography found inside. ALA and other Left wing radical library organizations have given it award after award. Is this the type of counseling you are referring to?

If you want me to, I can provide more of the "great" counseling that Planned Parenthood provides.

Yes, I have a problem with both, contraceptives and abortion. Here is one that should be taught. Self-control, self-control and then, some more self-control. If you are unable to control yourself and abstain, well then live with the consequences of your actions, which in fact is a BEAUTIFUL thing to bring a life into the world. Unlike the Left wing's god, people are not punished with a baby.

Acceptance of contraceptives is, but one step away from abortion. Why use a contraceptive?  because you don't want a child. Ooops, contraceptive did not work as planned, solution?, an abortion. You are lying to yourself if you believe that contraceptives stop abortions. Just look at the nations in Africa. Nations which have taught abstinence as a means to slow down and eventually stop the spread of HIV and AIDS have a much better control on the disease than nations which teach contraceptives. A fact also supported by Dr. Edward Green, a Senior Harvard Researcher for AIDS and HIV prevention.

But Planned Parenthood like most radical pro-murder of babies organizations want people to believe that human beings are no different than animals and that we can't control our sexual drive.

If Planned Parenthood wants to function, that is on them. They should live in the free-market place and NOT get 46% of their funding from tax payers! I would still fight hard against Planned Parenthood lies, abortion mills, deceptions and all, but they should live in the free-market. The problem is, and Planned Parenthood knows it, it would not survive in the free market.

But please, stop with your pro-Planned Parenthood propaganda. Thanks! You aren't talking to a bunch of easily manipulated tools of the Left.

John Francorix Jr., Speaks

Submitted by Liberallies on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 4:26pm.

John Francorix Jr.,

Speaks volumes to your obvious dishonesty and lies how you ignored all the Planned Parenthood counseling links. hahaha!! What? can't address the facts? I guess you have nothing against Planned Parenthood counseling underage girls to lie and cover up statutory rape. Good one Frenchboy.

Here let's try some logic which Liberals lack. Condoms and all types of contraceptives have been widely available for how long now? How long? decades, upon decades. In fact, contraceptives were used by Ancient Romans and other ancient civilizations. So, contraceptives have been around for centuries upon centuries. Hmmm...but wow, guess what, it hasn't stop abortions! has it? has it?!

It is a false statement to claim that wide use of contraceptives stops abortions. If this were the case, we wouldn't have abortions today.

Furthermore, no contraceptive is 100% accurate, not one! If they were you would be able to read when they advertise it, or on the box, "100% works in preventing pregnancy". But what do the doctors and boxes say? "99% works in preventing pregnancy". No honest doctor will ever tell you that the use of contraceptive will assure prevention of a pregnancy. So, hmmm...what happens when it fails? using your logic, well go for an abortion.

Yes, wide usage of contraceptive does NOT prevent abortions. If it did, abortions would not occur in the USA.

All of us here, each and everyone of us has friends and family members who have said, "...but I use a condom" or, "...but I was on the pill" "how could i have gotten pregnant?" What do you recommend then? Oh wait, yes, an abortion.

The morning after pill, Ru-486, which has led to the death of countless women? are you for real? this is an abortive pill!! any honest doctor will confirm that RU-486 use leads to an abortion! WOW!

Has anyone ever taught you logic and how to debate with honesty and facts?

Why is it that Liberals are so adamant against teaching self-control and abstinence? why? Do you honestly believe that us human beings are nothing, but animals that can't control ourselves? really?

You prove that the only thing Liberals are worried about is self-gratification and the consequences? consequences be damned. If I get pregnant or get someone pregnand, just murder the baby, no need to deal and face up to your lack of self-control.

If making a baby with the woman you're having sex with would qualify as a crisis, perhaps that's a woman you shouldn't be performing the mating act with in the first place.
Making a baby is the primary biological purpose of sex, you know.

Planned Parenthood is not the only resource for people for "family planning".  Every state has a health dept and every health dept has "free" programs for men and women, medical care, counseling, supplies (birth control) as well as  treatment and counseling for those with STD's.

What PP has is a monopoly on abortion using tax payer money.  Also, because of the way the medical regulations are written, most abortion clinics can avoid routine health inspectors visits. Therefore, the majority of PP clinics fail to meet even minimal standards of care for patients.

Recent months, 4 doctors in Penn have been arrested for various crimes related to abortion industry.  The PP clinics involved all failed to meet inspections.  Following those arrests, it was learned that the director of 2 of those clinics was also the director of 2 abortion clinics in La.  The state health dept got involved and for the first time in 14 years, all 5 abortion clinics in La were inspected. Three were immediately closed due to rats, rust, outdated equipment, no trained nurse, no trained anesthetists on staff.   Following that investigation, it was learned that dozens of doctors at La charity hospital systems, had reported repeated incidents of  women damaged due to botched abortions.  None of those complaints  had been investigated.

Also, after identifying the medical personnel with each clinic in Penn and La, referrals were made to other states where these same doctors were employed.  New Jersey as well as several other states found deplorable conditions at these PP facilities and many were closed. In NJ, several doctors were arrested for killing live born babies after late term abortions.

Hi Radical1

Submitted by John Francroix Jr on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 11:06am.

Do you have $700 I could borrow? That's the cost of the IUD contraceptive that lasts 5 years. My insurance won't cover it and aside from the very well known Planned Parenthood Clinic I'm not certain I can afford it. I've had allergic reactions to several other contraceptives but after much experimentation I have found this to be the best method for me.

Try a condom

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 12:53pm.

Why do you need a contraceptive that last 5 years? Are you afraid of forgetting to use one when you need it? I mean, really, how hard is it to use a condom, which are cheap and plentiful?

By the way, as you seem to be a male, what good would an IUD, an inter-uterine device, do for you? You don't even have a uterus! I don't know why you're even complaining about your insurance company. No insurance company in the world is going to pay for you to receive a medical device that you can't even use. And not even Planned Parenthood would give you one.

Some people have allergies to condoms

Some have allergies to lubrications. Some have negative reactions to the pill. Some use the pill not for contraception but to control periods. Some methods work for some and not for others. You can learn more about what works best for you at Planned.

Well if you have multiple sex partners you really should be using condoms to prevent disease. If you have only one sex partner why don't you ask him for some money? If you're that poor you should be on Medicare anyway and they can help.

I am wondering though why your sex life is my responsibility. If you can't afford birth control you shouldn't beggaring sex. Along the same lines don't expect me to pay for your beer. You can't afford it, don't do it.

I think your problem isn't so much that Planned is taking federal funds, it's that the government has decided that Planned is worth funding. You're never going to win the fight over where your tax dollars are spent. Why do I have to pay for someone else's kids to go to school?

Medicaid covers IUDs.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 5:33pm.

Most HMOs, some insurance plans, and Medicaid cover IUDs.

The majority of surveyed states cover most forms of prescription contraception (oral
contraceptives, intrauterine devices (IUDs), implants, injections, and diaphragms) as a family
planning service in all cases and draw down the 90% match.

So you have too much money to qualify for medicaid. But you have plenty of time to spend your day lying on the internet. Maybe you oughta look into a second job, huh?

Contraception for women is covered at no copay/deductible.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 6:59pm.

One of the evidence-based medicine (EBM) panels evaluating preventative medical services voted to require insurance carriers (and that includes Medicare, Medicaid and all other government funded programs) to cover contraception for women at 100%. Upon full implementation, there should be zero copays or deductibles applied for contraception for women.

Of course, why someone with a screen name of "John" would require an intrauterine device begs the question of is "he" pre-op for transgender surgery?

cajun2 is wrong?

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 7:43am.

Hmmmmmm. That would be a first. Hmmmmm.

Let's see.

Well now, I see with a quick search of google that list of states with issues with inspections of abortion clinics -

Pennsylvania --- ...finally resumed routine inspections of abortion clinics last year after more than 15...

Kansas - Kansas will require annual, unannounced inspections of abortion clinics...

Delaware - Abortion clinics do not fall under the definition of medical facilities in the state that require routine inspections, like free-standing surgery centers, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health...

Virginia - The threat that a health department inspector could visit the clinics at any time also...

Texas - Former Gov. Ed Rendell said Friday he was “flabbergasted” when he found out last year that the state Health Department didn’t think its authority extended to abortion clinics...

Maryland - Did you know that Maryland does not inspect abortion clinics?

Do I really need to go on to page 3?

POINT - cajun2

And you John Francroix Jr just blew through your freebie. The next stunt you pull like this, you will get your label - LIAR.

If abortion is so beloved and people really want abortions, why do we need the government paying for it? And more than that, why is it moral to demand from some who finds it immoral the issue of abortion, to demand they fork over the fruits of their labor to pay for it? Why do these people fail to understand that?

Planned Parenthood= planned murder

Submitted by God help us on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 2:16am.

Planned Parenthood funds the war on life at taxpayer expense. Last year they preformed more than 350,000 abortions at tax payers expense. Obama is the biggest cheer leader for death on earth. Do you know who else provides gynecological services?

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 12:37pm.

"We know that Planned Parenthood provides essential gynecological services to women."

Do you know who else provides essential gynecological services to women? Just about every hospital and clinic in the country! It's not like there's a lack of affordable treatment in the country. Every single hospital in America will give those essential services to women, for free if they can't afford it. Planned Parenthood could disappear forever and it's not going to negativity affect women's "reproductive health" at all.

Why is Planned Parenthood receiving federal funding when others do not? What makes them so special, other than that they can afford to pay millions of dollars for lobbyists? That's something people like Bashir never seems to want to talk about.

These are the same people (LIBS) who have no compunction in aborting a baby, yet slam Rick & Karen Santorum about the way they handled the death of their baby, saying "it's too weird!" And liberals call themselves compassionate? Yet conservatives are supposed to go along in having our tax dollars used to kill unborn children?

I propose the 'Peanut Butter- Legs Amendment', that states if a woman's legs are easily spread, then she should shell out her own money for her own abortion, and stop forcing those of us with a conscience to go along.

If men could get pregnant, then abortion

Submitted by ekslib on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 4:07pm.

would NOT be a common response to an "unplanned" pregnancy.

Pro-aborts have loved to say that, "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."

They imply that powerful people would be quick to end a pregnancy.

Actually, powerful people are surrounded by people who want to help them live a satisfying life under all sorts of circumstances.

I imagine a huge pro-pregnancy industry would have developed if men could have gotten pregnant.

Planned parenthood keeps women weak, by implying that pregnant women should abort, instead of providing support for mothers-to-be.
