New Low for Tebow Derangement Syndrome: Broncos Win Could Mean Mosques, Synagogues Burn

By Ken Shepherd | December 14, 2011 | 16:01

Ken Shepherd's picture

Update (19:35 EST, Dec. 18): On Friday, Hammerman apologized for his column at his personal blog site. You can read that in full here.

Update (10:35 EST, Dec. 15): The Jewish Week has completely pulled the Hammerman post.

Update (16:40 EST): Huston has a screen capture that shows the Hammerman post before he scrubbed it of its offensive passage.

One Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, a columnist for The Jewish Week, went off the deep end into a cesspool of anti-Tim Tebow derangement in his December 12 post, "My Tim Tebow" problem.

Former NewsBuster Warner Todd Huston noted the most offensive passage of Hammerman's screed at the website HoosierAccess.com. This paragraph has since been scrubbed from Hammerman's post:

If Tebow wins the Super Bowl, against all odds, it will buoy his faithful, and emboldened faithful can do insane things, like burning mosques, bashing gays and indiscriminately banishing immigrants. While America has become more inclusive since Jerry Falwell’s first political forays, a Tebow triumph could set those efforts back considerably.

<<Like this post? Help us take on media bias by donating to NewsBusters (there's also a PayPal option on that page). Without the support of our readers, NewsBusters would not be possible.>>

It's so laughably absurd you'd think this were from The Onion. But Hammerman appears to be dead serious, even in his sanitized post, where grafs like these make clear Hammerman is a) a die-hard Boston sports fan and b) mentally unbalanced:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

I admire much of what Tebow stands for. His mom’s decision to risk her own life rather than abort her fetus flies against my own – and Judaism’s – values, but neither am I pro-choice in all cases. His story is so improbable that if he were to win it all, a part of me would be wondering whether there is a Purpose behind it, just as I saw a divine hand in the equally unbelievable Red Sox victory of 2004. And it makes me wonder whether other Jews, the ones who don’t happen to have advanced degrees in religion and a few decades of rabbinic experience, might be even more seduced by this unfolding drama. Will legions of Southern Baptist missionaries hit the college campuses the very next day, spreading this new gospel of Tim? Already there is a “Jews for Tebow” Facebook page.

Tebow used to wear eye black citing Ephesians 2:8-10, which states, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith (in Jesus).” His avenue to salvation is not available to those Jews who wish to remain Jewish.

Unlike some other blue-staters, I do not fear people of faith. I fear people of certainty. The worldwide struggle going on right now is not between good and evil, but between certainty and doubt. It cuts across denominational lines: Progressive and Modern Orthodox Jews lie on one side of the divide, joining mainline Christians and moderate Muslims; and those on the other side are also Jews, Christians and Muslims; the people of certainty.

For me, only one thing is certain. On Sunday, I’ll be praying for the Patriots.

Did you get all that? Hammerman holds himself out as an extremely well-educated scholar who fears the illiterate religious masses will go nuts because a Christian athlete is a success on the gridiron. Of this he's certain, although he claims to "fear people of certainty."

As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a maroon!"

Thanks for bringing this up

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 4:30pm.

Thanks for bringing this up in its own thread; I linked it in the OT this morning.

What also bears noting is another implication of anti-Semitism....

Next Sunday, the Broncos host the New England Patriots...[...]... While the Patriots are adored by their fans (myself included), to many nationwide they are regarded as the Sons of Darkness, with their perfectly coiffed Hollywood quarterback and their brilliant – one might say diabolical – hoodie-clad coach. And, oh yes, the most identifiably Jewish owner in sports. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Bob Kraft are all upstanding citizens, moral exemplars in their home communities, but in this Oberammergau of the Rockies, they are playing the role of Pilate.

Got that?  It's Jesus against the guy who sentenced Him to death.

And since the Jewish leaders turned Him over to Pilate, a Tebow/Broncos victory would also be seen as sticking it to the Jews.

That part hasn't been scrubbed.  Yet.

Rabbi wants Tebow to conceal his religion

Submitted by rwnewsnut on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 5:00pm.

So if Tim Tebow were not religious, I suspect this Rabbi would not be writing a column about Tebow. He is disturbed that Jews might convert to Christianity based on Tebow's popularity. If that's true, they weren't that 'into' Judaism to begin with.

This Rabbi is really going out on that proverbial limb - praying 'this' week that the Broncos lose - they are playing the Patriots.

Again, if Tebow were Muslim - this would all be considered politically incorrect to question his embrace of his religion. Since Tim is a Christian - have at it.

Alternate Universe "logic"??

Submitted by Pilgrim1949 on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 4:26pm.

If the "honorable"(?) Rabbi’s thesis was correct we would have already seen smoldering Mosques and ERs filled with gays and immigrants who had been savagely brutalized by those terrorists-just-waiting-for-the-dog-whistle zealots to mobilize in world-conquest mode, reigning down holy judgment on the “sinners”. Yup, those eeevanjellykills do it all the time.

Don’t they?

Oh wait, it’s the folks at the OTHER end of the COEXIST bumper sticker that do that, don’t they? Dang, sure ruins a good ranting meme...

It seems our quivering Rabbi conflates death-to-the-infidel, suicide-vest, sword-wielding jihadis with dying-to-self Christians verbalizing their faith. It’s an easy mistake to make, actually, if your worldview is primarily (or solely!) Lib/Dem/Prog-based.

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 11:02am.

This idiot is supposedly a Jew with lots of education and decades as a Rabbi. Last I heard, Rabbis, Priests, Ministers, Imams, etc. were supposed to be about nothing BUT faith and certainty in their faith. Yet, here's this over-educated, arrogant, elitist slamming someone else's faith, along with others of his OWN faith. Head-slapping other faiths can be understood (not agreed with, but understood). Degrading other Jews who don't agree with his narrow world-view sounds to me like anti-Semitism.
This clearly demonstrates the poison that is liberalism, or progressivism, or whatever you want to call it. This bigot is sitting in his ivory tower using his supposed faith and knowledge of that faith to denigrate the faithful, clearly based on his political philosophy. He, and any clergy of other faiths, should be removed from positions of power in their respective religions, and no longer be permitted to use the "I'm a Rabbi, so I know what I'm talking about" bully pulpit.

Rabbi Doubt

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 5:24pm.

Rabbi: ". . . Unlike some other blue-staters, I do not fear people of faith. I fear people of certainty. The worldwide struggle going on right now is not between good and evil, but between certainty and doubt."

So, he identifies himself as a rabbi (which means "Teacher"), but he considers himself a doubter of his own faith.   I didn't know that Reformed Judaism had reformed that far. What does he tell his congregation?  "We may be wrong."

And if he is a doubter, doesn't that inherently imply that Tebow may be right?

The rabbi may have spent

Submitted by iacta alea est on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 5:34pm.

The rabbi may have spent years studying Judaism but his knowledge of Christian scrpitures seems to be selective. He tries to gin up controversy by citing Tebow's use of Ephes. 2:8-10, but only uses the part of the verse that suits his case. He leaves out ...."and that not of yourself, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast." The rabbi doesn't care to mention that the thrust of the verse is to instruct the reader that one cannot attain salvation thru good works, i.e., one cannot earn his way into heaven.

So using Hammerman's logic

Submitted by panzerakc on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 6:01pm.

a win by any team other than the Broncos should result in raping, pillage, looting, etc.

I make this conclusion based on Hammerman's assertion that fans will model their behavior on the players' behaviors, and the thuggish behaviors of some of the NFL's more notorious employees (those that abuse women, indiscriminately father children right and left, get DUIs and DWIs at the drop of a hat, drug use, etc.).

I don't really follow football, so could some of you that do tell me if that happened, that major American cities were burning because a particular, non-Bronco team won a game?

Whew! What a relief, he draws the line at a mother killing her child, somewhere. Even a jew should recognize Jeremiah 1:5 seems to argue for Jehovah not digging the whole abortion thing. BTW-It is not as if Tebow is wearing sackcloth & ashes (too Jewish?), and beating his breast. He is essentially no different from people who have Jesus fish on their cars or go to Bible studies. It is interesting to see into the mind of an elitist leftist though, it seems his politics inform his religion. I like it better the other way around.

Sick: Abortion Backer Uses Tim Tebow Touchdowns To Raise Funds For Pro-Abortion Groups

Pro-life blogger Jill Stanek noticed a pro-abortion activist named Sophia who blogs at The Abortion Gang, promoting the idea.

So here is my solution, and if you’re a sports fan that also thinks women should be able to do what they want, when they want, and how they want it with their uteri, you can join in this too.

For every touchdown Tebow throws next week (when the Broncos play against another famous QB, Tom Brady), donate $5 or $10 to your local pro-choice organization. . .

I figure this is indeed the best way to enjoy football, support Tim Tebow (more touchdowns, mannn!!!), and give, give, give to pro-choice organizations earning little to no glory, yet desperately in need of funds.

Isn't it ironic how we hear so often...

Submitted by stage9 on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 8:17pm.

about what Christians "will do if faith is given prominence in society" but have yet to EVER once see this manifest?! Contrast that with radicals who do exactly the things they accuse others of, and no one seems to notice.

They claim Tea Partiers are racist and then nuzzle up to American Nazis at occupy.
They accuse Conservatives of stonewalling in Congress and then stonewall.
They accuse Christians of bigotry and then act like bigots against the Christian faith.

Despite the fact that our Founders were deeply Christian and the United States wouldn't even exist had it not been for Christianity, radicals continue to be obsessed with a mythological fear of the US turning into a theocracy!

Here's a clue for the radicals on the left, if our Founders didn't establish the US as a theocracy, no one else has any interest either, save islamists.

Expressing one's faith in the Judeo/Christian God is as American as apple pie and professional football.

Liberalism on the other hand is as antithetical to US culture as russian folk music.

And might I point out the utter foolishness of liberal reason?

The good Rabbi says:

"I do not fear people of faith. I fear people of certainty."

Is the good Rabbi CERTAIN he fears people of CERTAINTY? After all, if he's certain, then does he fear himself?

Drudge seems to be rather fond of Tebow

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 8:35pm.

This is the latest Tebow link.

I knew Bill Belichick was a fan, and he is exactly right.  Tim Tebow is a very good passer.  Unfortunately, he doesn't have three or four great receivers...he's getting in the groove with a go-to guy, but that all takes time, and most of all, game time...to develop that third sense of where the clutch guy is going to be.  Tebow is becoming far more adept at sensing the collapse of the pocket, and his read time on the defense is quite a bit faster.  IOW, the game is slowing down for him.  Even if Denver doesn't get into the playoffs, or very far into them, watch for Tebow to continue improving.  His teammates trust him now, his innate leadership is known to them, they believe, and they'll follow him to hell, if necessary.

You didn't understand my point, Norto

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 1:32pm.

Tim Tebow's style is to lead by example. If his teammates choose to follow him in his faith, he's happy about that, but while he's openly enthusiastic about his faith, he doesn't push it on others. I was referring to his teammates on the football field. Read the SI article, below, and you'll see what his teammates say as Tim earning their respect, and that they will now, indeed, follow him into football hell as their leader.

That is the ultimate leadership compliment. Like Allen West said about the incident which ended his military career (firing a gun next to a terrorist's head)...."Oh yes, I'd do it again, I'd walk through hell with gasoline cans in my hands if that's what it takes to save the lives of my men". That is leadership. Allen West has it. Tebow has it.

But thanks for misconstruing my point.

Certainty

Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Tue, 01/03/2012 - 6:46pm.

With characteristic liberal oblivion he also says:

"When supposedly well-educated candidates publicly question overwhelming [certain?] scientific evidence on climate change and evolution and then gain electoral traction by fabricating [bringing things that were NOT in existence to a semblance--but only a semblance of existence] conspiracies [i.e., things that are NOT happening] about a war on Christmas, these are not rational times."

Can't they be? Why so final?

That's right certainty is bad, but so is questioning Scientific authority--or not being certain that (select sects of) scientists are right.

This near-certainty that there is something wrong with the rationality of his fellow citizens--stated in the most ubiquitous elements of the current liberal narrative in general--leads him into a fear that conservative Christians will try to dissuade Jewish people from their cultural/ethnic faith, where the best are uncertain, apparently, by presenting a "Gospel of Tim"--as if the practice of Christianity were to add things to it by virtue of winning a ball game--not just reflections and lessons, but actually in some way, relatively equal in authority to one of the four Gospels, and evangelize on that basis.

The process of engaging in Christianity is evangelism. Evangelism is not inevitably indicative of a sort of certainty--but a faith and a practice of that faith. Just as Judaism is properly the practice of bringing glory to the God of Israel, and not just being a nice guy. Who could deny Hosea the title of "nice guy" if he simply divorced Gomer after her nth infidelity? But Hosea was to forgive his wife endlessly, just as the Lord does Israel. As an illustration not of "nice-ness" but of the character of the God of Israel. Who could have endured this demonstration without a near-certain ("resolute"?) faith?

I think that Hammerman reveals in the piece where his certainty lies, and just like various faiths, the division between you and him starts there. It forms a clear picture of Hammerman's own prejudices.

The Tebow makes the cover of SI next week.

Look at the adjectives on the cover:  "Amazing, Incredible, Phenomenal, Mind-Blowing, Incomprehensible, Unbelievable..."

Last graf in a very nice article:

On Sunday, after the Broncos' latest improbable comeback, McCoy, Tebow and Gase came together near the sideline. They hugged individually, then as a group. Within the circle McCoy looked at his young star and thanked him. "You kept believing! You kept believing!" he told Tebow. "I love you. I love you."

Expect the haters to come out of the woodwork in droves.

I'm just astounded by this statement.

Submitted by misterbee241 on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 1:03pm.

"His avenue to salvation is not available to those Jews who wish to remain Jewish."

Absolutely, totally, completely, false. Jesus came FOR the Jew and Israel rejected her Messiah. Salvation is open to anybody who wants it, Jew or Gentile. Jesus made this plain to Nicodemus. So Rabbi, when a Jew recognizes his Messiah, he is no longer Jewish? Rubbish. So was it God's plan to send a Messiah to make the Jews something other than Jews? No. Israel is the apple of God's eye, His chosen people. Scripture says in both the OT and the NT, "salvation of from the Jews."
Two things to count on: (1) God WILL restore Israel, and (2) Israel WILL recognize her Messiah.

Hammerman is supposed to be a learned man. But with statements like this he shows his ignorance. I could go on about this for days. But the readers here get my point.
Shalom, Rabbi, Yeshuah Meshiach.

If you're not getting flak, you're not over the target.

Yet more great insight into Tim Tebow, the person

This is one of the better articles I've read.   And trust me, I've read a lot of Tebow articles.
