Chris Matthews, Leftist Journo David Corn Think Bachmann's 'Devil's in the Details' Quip Not a Joke

By Ken Shepherd | October 12, 2011 | 17:48

Ken Shepherd's picture

Hardball host Chris Matthews honestly believes that Rep. Michele Bachmann's "devil's in the details" joke about Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan may be something more sinister, or at least cynically calculated to appeal to "strange, far right" Christian voters.

"Well, last night, Congressman and David, they were supposed to stick to economics, but of course Michele Bachmann couldn't avoid religious concerns," the MSNBC host complained to Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and David Corn of the left-wing magazine Mother Jones on his October 12 program. [MP3 audio available here for download; Video follow page break]

"Here she is passing what even my producers think was a joke, I don't think so, talking about the sign of the beast, which I learned from some of these characters is apparently 9-9-9, Herman Cain's economic program turned upside-down, 6-6-6," Matthews prefaced the debate sound bite, insisting, "This is Michele Bachmann, desperate."

"What would you say if you were debating a person like that who shifted the topic to the strange, far-right Christian notions about the devil and the sign of the beast?" Matthews asked Frank, adding, "She can't resist that catnip," suggesting that Bachmann was making a play for folks who may somehow think Cain's tax plan is downright satanic.

Later in the segment, Corn agreed with Matthews's loopy view:

DAVID CORN, Mother Jones: I think there's a slight chance, maybe more than slight, that Michele Bachmann really believes this.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: The sign of the beast. That Herman Cain is the anti-Christ.

CORN: That, perhaps. I mean, she has said so many outlandish things over the years, and she has a very fundamental view of the world, she has a very conspiratorial view of the world.

Next time you get her on the show, ask her about Agenda 21. She believes in black helicopters and everything leading up to the Rapture. So it's not inconceivable that this wasn't a joke.

That is not conspiracy theorizing. That is fact.

I heard Newt Gingrich in a radio interview state flatly that if elected, he will do whatever he has to to put a stop to it.

Reagan and the Eleventh Commandment:

The personal attacks against me during the primary finally became so heavy that the state Republican chairman, Gaylord Parkinson, postulated what he called the Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican. It's a rule I followed during that campaign and have ever since.

Let me get this straight.... Michele does her own research and finds someone, squawking across a crowd about the evil vaccine.

Michele, jumps and  the science be damned.

The vaccine is aimed at shielding girls from human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexual infection that can lead to cervical cancer. Federal health officials say they are confident that the vaccine is safe, noting that more than 35 million doses have been administered in the United States with no pattern of serious side effects.

Michele, wants a smaller government right???

What does 999 do? It gets rid of the IRS. hows that for reducing the size of government?

But wait there's more: here is Michele's plan... Implement a national consumption or flat tax.... Describe to me in detail what her plan is?

Again suggesting on National TV that the 999 plan by a Christian man, is equal to 666 is very poor taste and embarrassing.

I agree with you about the 999 comment, and I think Newt did a good job of debating, yet trying to keep the focus on beating Obama, no matter who gets the nomination.

The vaccine thing, well, I think Perry has a problem with that. I don't believe it's the type of disease the government has the right to mandate a vaccine on, and worse than that, Michelle Malkin outlines his conflicts on interests on this issue.

And while individual stories of Gardasil harm may or may not be true (Bachmann cited a mother who thinks the vaccine caused mental retardation in her child while making the post-debate rounds), it’s not the primary case she should be making.

Actually, I thought she was making a damn fine joke

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 12:22am.

....and that she did it on purpose, too, fully aware of the fact that the left wing media would try to paint her as some kind of right wing uber religious freak....for mentioning the "turn it upside down, the devil is in the details".

Cain's plan, IMO, IS bold. But he's been touting 999 for a couple of weeks now, and I love the simplicity of his basic idea. However, he has YET to get detailed about the mechanics of how it will work (ideally). As a new member of the "front runners club", he expected (as he should have) to be attacked on it...but he was a bit short on the details last night.

So I took Bachmann's little dig as a clever tweak on multiple levels. She is, after all, a tax attorney. And a fundamentalist Christian. She said it with a smile...obviously a prepared remark.

Furthermore Bachmann followed by raising a VERY valid issue, that of opening a new revenue stream for Congress to spend! Cain did a reasonable job of fending it off....but again, the DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS....he's going to have to flesh those out.

Finally

Submitted by rance on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 10:45am.

Finally, a thoughtful reply.

The devil is in the details. Larry Kudlow and other conservative ecconomists discussed that third nine last Saturday. All agreed, that a national sales tax is problematic. One ecconimist pointed out that it would impinge on states where the only state revenue is from sales tax.

Cain has now shifted the paradigm

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 11:32am.

Which is great!

He has moved up to the top tier, convincingly, by capturing the imagination of the conservative base, with his bold 999 plan. He has everyone talking about it. And he is slamming home the point (remember, if something is repeated often enough it becomes a fact in the common ethos) that "pivoting off the current tax code won't work".

Now he has to flesh out his 999 plan. How is FICA going to work? What about those states with a state income tax but no sales tax? How does he prevent Congress from immediately raising the basic 9% rate? Where are capital gains? How does he plan to transition from our current tax code to the new one? Are items like home purchases exempted from the national sales tax? Services? What are the revenue numbers? What are the corresponding cuts he plans to make?

IMO, Cain is right on track with his "plan". It's simple enough for people to get behind and understand at this point in the campaign. Just like Paul Ryan's Road Map, it's going to take a massive media campaign to explain the "devil in the details".

The flat tax, or 999, makes a whole lot more sense to me than the dog's breakfast we currently have.

As for your concern that a national sales tax "impinges" on the state sales tax...hardly. I live in Florida, we don't have a state income tax. What it will impact though, are the local taxes, like hotel taxes (kill the tourists)...franchise fees (on utilities, again a huge funding source of unearned income for local municipalities), etc.

9 - 9 - 9 is a joke

Submitted by PaleHorse on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 5:30pm.

Cain's 9-9-9 plan is a total joke. As Dan Shaviro adeptly noted:

"A key part of 9-9-9's intuitive appeal is the idea that, not only is 9 a low number, but the plans three 9's appear to be spread out. 9 percent on the worker, 9 percent on the business, 9 percent on retail sales.

But as I noted in my prior post, the latter two 9's are effectively THE SAME TAX (a few details aside). Only ignorance and naive folk notions of incidence could make them look like two different taxes that are pointed at different players"

Humor impaired

Submitted by HockeyKid on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 8:03am.

Lefties are humor-impaired. They insisted that Governor Bev Perdue's comment about suspending elections for two years (made with a straight face) was intended as a joke, and they can't grasp the humor in Bachmann's line (made with a wry smile). I think their social development is somehow stunted.

Not at all

Submitted by c5then on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 9:12am.

Their ideology takes over and trumps their common sense or normal social interactions.

It's how they can claim that a black conservative is racist when he tells other blacks to think for themselves, but call a black liberal "empowering" when he tells them to do as they are told.

Term Limits just mean quicker sellouts

Submitted by Don L on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 9:40am.

It's not congress as much as the parasites and depraved souls that put them up there to do their bidding. The masses are corrupted, morally and politically and term limits won't change that a bit.

Oh it was a half-joke and it was on purpose.

Submitted by c5then on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 9:08am.

Whenever someone comes out with a specific plan, their opponents always will jump on it and try and pick it apart. It's the reason the campaign consultants tell them not to be too specific if they can avoid it.

The reason I say it was a half-joke is because it is too visually coincidental for some evangelical Christians to ignore. I am one and I always have discusions with my freinds and collegues in which I have to remind them that the Bible was not originally written in English, but was in fact written mostly in Hebrew and some Greek and then translated into Latin and then Greek and then into German and and then they went back to the Latin and Greek translations and produced an English version with Anglicized names and terms. My point is that while the over-all message, themes and concepts have been preserved, getting wrapped arounf a particular word or term or illustration is a mistake and can obscure the bigger picture.

Because the original Hebrew didn't have numbers, they used letters to stand for numbers. So while the translations may in fact be accurate in using "666" in Revelations, it might also be just as accurate to use "www". The Hebrew letter associated with the number 6 is best translated as W in English.

Now how many are going to argue that it is not possible that the so-called "mark of the beast" is actually www and not 666?

Revelation was written in

Submitted by Ken Shepherd on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 10:11am.

Revelation was written in Koine Greek to the seven churches in Asian Minor, not in Hebrew.

A few years ago, some scholars came out with the theory that the number was mistranslated and it's actually 616. http://www.religionnewsblog.com/11134/beasts-real-mark-devalued-to-616

Throughout much of church history there's been rampant speculation about who or what form the anti-Christ would take, etc., when I think the purpose of Revelation is not to spur such speculation but to comfort the believer with the surety of the final victory of Christ and His Church over the gates of Hell.

Care, please

Submitted by HockeyKid on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 10:12am.

Mighty wide brush you swing there, not to mention a large sprinkling of assumptions.

A few points: first, you left out Aramaic as one of the languages considered to be original to Biblical scripture, and you don't differentiate between Greek and Koine Greek.

Second, you should specify which translation is your subject when positing such a specific succession of translation. It is erroneous to say that every English translation followed the path you state.

Third, it is incorrect to say that Hebrew uses "a letter" to represent 6. It actually uses two or three letters (depending on gender of context). The letter in question, shin, marginally resembles the letter W, but is not transliterated as such. It is phonetically "s" or "sh". The numbers shisha (two characters) and shesh (three characters) resemble "ww" and "nww", but have no relation to those letters otherwise.

Finally, the number of the beast is in Revelation, which was originally in Koine Greek, a language that DOES have a number six (hex), represented by two characters. However, the number in the passage is rendered as a phrase, translated as "six hundred sixty-six".

Consequently, I would argue (and, clearly, have done so) that the mark of the beast is not correctly presented in English as www, but indeed as 666.

Indeed.

The letter m is 13th in the alphabet, so mmm is 3x13, or 39. 3 from 9 is 6, so clearly "mmm, mmm, mmm" has a hidden nefarious meaning. ;)

Never mind the blatant nefarious actions of Obysmal...
