Time Taps Patti Davis to Insist Reagan Debate Shows Candidates, Except for Huntsman, Lack Character
If Time magazine were really interested in what a conservative Reagan family member thinks of the GOP 2012 presidential field as it stands now in terms of living up to his father's political legacy, it could have easily asked conservative commentator Michael Reagan for his thoughts on last night's primary debate at the Reagan Presidential Library.
Instead, the magazine tapped liberal Reagan daughter Patti Davis who, predictably, concluded that none of the candidates, with the possible exception of left-leaning Jon Huntsman, fit the bill:
From "Looking for Ronald Reagan -- and Not Finding Him" (emphasis mine):
Last night's Republican debate took place at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, an expansive space containing a former Air Force One jet. If you walked out of the hangar-like building and turned left, went up a path past a wide grassy area with a canyon below and miles of sky above, you would reach my father's burial site. On the stone tomb you would read these words: "I know in my heart that man is good, that what is right will always eventually triumph, and there is purpose and worth to each and every life."
My father said that, and other memorable things, with an earnestness, a resonance, and a sincerity that came from a deep well within him. Note to Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and especially Newt Gingrich — you can invoke my father's name until your tongues fall out, but you will never be anywhere near his shadow. This isn't a political pronouncement on my part. I didn't agree with all of my father's positions and policies, and I would never consider myself a political commentator. I'm the daughter of a man with deep character, who left a huge imprint on this world. He lived a large and meaningful life and I learned over many years that I had to share him with America. But before that — before politics and the presidency — I listened to his stories about being a poor boy in the Midwest, about standing up to racism and learning from his parents that God has a purpose for everyone and everyone is precious in God's eyes. (See TIME's photo essay "Front-Row Seat at the Reagan White House.")
That character is what drew people to my father, whether or not they agreed with his politics. That character is what we are starving for, that many of us had hoped we would find — but are now disappointed that we are not — in President Obama. I think my father, if he were here, would also be disappointed in this administration. But here is the important part: he would never have expressed that with anger and vitriol and snarky soundbites. The Republican candidates tonight appeared to be auditioning for a reality show, not for the lofty position of leading America through and out of these terribly troubled times.
Ironically, the one man on stage who did comport himself with dignity, John Huntsman, is now being dismissed as having not made an impact. The moment he brought the discussion back from airport security to the sweeping poverty and economic panic that is gripping this country was, I thought, profound. It was something my father would have done. But that moment isn't making the news. The zingers like Perry's Ponzi-scheme comment, in reference to Social Security, are getting more attention. Maybe the candidates should have wandered over to my father's gravesite before going on stage. Maybe they should have lingered over the words carved in stone there.
The moment that would have broken my father's heart was the moment when applause broke out at the mention of more than 200 executions ordered by Rick Perry in Texas. It was stunning and brought tears to my eyes. This is what we've come to? That we applaud at executions?
I remember the first time my father ordered an execution when he was Governor. He and a minister went into a room, got down on their knees and prayed. The real shame of our times is that there doesn't seem to be anyone on the political horizon with that compassion in his or her heart.

I can agree with this statement however this sentance concerns me: "But that moment isn't making the news." She lays blame on the Republicans in the debate because the media is pushing certain images that fit their agenda.
I agree to a point

It's silly that journalists poke and prod the candidates with questions that make them dance to their song and then blame them for doing so. Obama's message was carried in buckets from faithful journalists to consumers regularly. His "character" was a facade so in the end, it also fails. It seems they'll never be happy.
I think America needs to stop looking for an Idol or an Icon and look for someone who can do the job. But I'm not holding my breath :P

What a joke, the guy is right there with John McCain.
Patti Davis is Ronald Reagan's Hanoi Jane.

Jr. Reagan is Leon Trotsky. Both are loudmouth leftists that even Khrushchev would have considered too dumb to be useful idiots. Patti bangs her shoe on the table anytime anyone is willing to dig her out of obscurity to blast her father. Jr. just sticks around, hanging solely on dad's last name, having inherited none of his father's communications skills, sense of humor or political savvy.
I guess Caroline Kennedy was unavailable.

The MSM loves to parade Reagan's liberal children around to inform us that "these Republicans will never be as great as my daddy." Were it not for their father, no one would give a hoot what these two rich kids thought. Very similar to Meghan McCain, who is also about two years into her 15 minutes of fame.
I think Ron Reagan Jr. and Patti Smith are very closely aligned politically with their mother Nancy. Though she departed the Hollywood elite when her husband netered politics, she has intained close friendships with some of its icons and reflects their shared beliefs. The sole reason she has not been more outspoken about her liberal perspective is due to her deep love and respect for her conservative husband and his legacy.

The friend of my enemy alerts me who not to vote for. Thanks Patti. You all but sealed the fate of Huntsmann, as if it needed to be buried any deeper. Also, Patti, why don't you tell us the name of one republican candidate for President you voted for in the past twenty years.

Patti Davis and her looney brother Ron Jr. are the last people in the world who understood or remotely supported the political conservatism of their father.

The Social Security program would have over 2.5 trillion in the reserve NOW if the feds did not raid it and Clinton didn't just take it all and put it in the general fund just to make his years look like he didn't run a deficit.

"How on earth did this democrat named Huntsman wonder up on stage?"
Jenna, Chelsea, & Steve Ford up next!

For the next GOP debate, Time Magazine will have Jenna Bush and Barbara Bush give their opinion on each candidate
Chelsea Clinton will weigh in on the Democratic Party Debate next time around, and Steve Ford will offer his view on the debt ceilling.
Patti Davis didn't think her own father had much character most of her life.........remember!
She didn't care much for her own mother, brothers, and sister.
She lived most of her early life with the sole purpose of annoying her mother and father.
Her book about her father (angels) is actually a good read, yes, I read it...........I feel badly about that somehow.
But, Time only shows how much it has fallen. From THE publication to read, to a 'thing' that can't seem to make
a dent in the modern world as important anymore.
Sasha will have her view on ketchup: vegetable or deadly food.

Patty Davis Huh?

Unfortunately for her and Time Mag there are a bunch of us that were around for the Reagan presidency and remember just how much embarrasment both Patty and Ronnie Jr were for the president. They were leftist lunatics even then... raised more by their Hollywood buddies than Ron and Nancy (that is all I would fault the late president for). I can still remember Patty's "smear all" autobiography that trashed her dad.
Patty Davis is not credible here and is a waste of space.
