Newsweek's Tomasky: Huntsman a 'Narrow Thread of Hope' for GOP

By Ken Shepherd | August 23, 2011 | 12:12

Newsweek's Michael Tomasky counts himself as one of many "impressed liberal[s]" who are heartened by Jon Huntsman's attacks on Rick Perry.

Writing yesterday on the Daily Beast website, Tomasky suggested the former Utah governor was "a narrow thread of hope about the future" of the GOP dominated by both leaders and rank-and-file primary voters who are far from "reasonable."

As such, Huntsman's tactic of violating Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment was harmful in the short term but a perfect plan for a long-term resurgence, Tomasky insisted (emphasis mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Huntsman strategy here is obvious: position himself as the moderate and reasonable guy on the off chance Republicans decide to be moderate and reasonable. We must assume he is aware that his odds on this are rather long, so what he’s really hoping for is to be the consensus candidate of 2016. Maybe the party just has to go through this purge, this Reign of Terror; so just let it do that, and once it does and nominates an extremist who can’t beat a weak incumbent during a time of 9 percent unemployment rates, and the heads are piled high enough in the tumbrels and enough people finally have returned to their senses, he will ride the Thermidorian wave to victory after Obama leaves town.

Tomasky went on to complain that Huntsman is hardly a moderate, being an advocate of a flat income tax but that, "Even so, his remarks about science, Perry, and the debt ceiling all suggest a man who doesn’t think compromise is, to use Perry’s word, treason," the Newsweek contributor noted approvingly.

All the same, Tomasky issued a smug prediction that foresees at least 12 more years of Democratic dominance of the White House:

The more likely long-term scenario is that Huntsman will have negligible impact on his party. Unless the GOP does something truly self-immolating next year, like nominating a Bachmann who goes on to win 120 electoral votes, the current trajectory will likely continue for the foreseeable future. I think the Republicans, a stubborn bunch, will have to endure eight years of Obama and then eight years of some other Democrat (Hillary?) before they finally acknowledge certain realities, and even that seems iffy. So that’s 2024 at the earliest. Huntsman will be 64 then. But Sarah Palin will be just 60.

Exactly

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 1:29pm.

The MSM has been turning on the love for Huntsman in recent weeks. As his desperate attacks on fellow GOP candidates show, he's acceptable to them, which is exactly why he won't win the GOP primaries.

They loved McCain, too, until he won the GOP nomination, at which point they pounced on him and his 'extreme' views.  But after Obama beat him, McCain returned to 'acceptable Republican' status.

Huntsman will likely get more media attention by the MSM, while Ron Paul will continue to suffer from minimal coverage.

Open Primaries

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 1:59pm.

We really need to start hammering the RNC to get off the dime.

Instead of "picking" our primary candidates ( like they tried to do with McRino's pal McCrist over Marco!) they should get to work with the voters of those states where there are open primaries.

Independents are lovely people, I'm sure, but if they can't get off the dime to choose a party, they shouldn't have the ability to vote in primaries.

Don't even get me started on cross-over primaries.

He may be a 'narrow thread of hope' to the Obama-supporting RINOs in the GOP (who have done everything they can to assist him in implementing his hideous plan) , but he's DOA as far as conservatives are concerned.

How's that one working out for you, Tomasky?  Remember that one?  "The democrats will rule for 40 years".

Seems that pronouncement was just a wee bit premature, ill-considered, and flat-out wrong, but do continue making your pronouncements.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

Is "trajectory" the word of the day for Democrat hacks?

Submitted by drsamherman on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 12:33pm.

Every news report on network/mainstream media has used the word "trajectory" when a Democrat hack (like Tomasky) gives "advice" to the GOP. Tomasky and his ilk do not have the native intelligence required to use this term without direction from someone like Jay Carney or David Plouffe. Certainly Dimwit Debbie could not have come up with it, as she could not give proper directions down a one-way street.

Between the "smart glasses" fad and the buzzwords, the Democrat cabal is hardly presenting itself as a party of intellectuals.

Does Tomasky remember or acknowledge that the republicans tried his strategy in ’08? How did moderate, reasonable guy McCain do against any empty suit with no record running on platitudes?

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 1:23pm.

I'd have a hard time using the word 'reasonable' for the McCain Mutiny...........unless it came out of a lib/Dem/MSM mouth - which is what they're trying to do here with Huntsman. I think we all know that if the MSM is pushing for a 'Republican' that they find to be 'fair, reasonable, and willing to walk across the aisle and be bi-partisan and make compromises' - then we sure as hell are NOT going to be backing the guy!!!

We got burned pretty bad with that philosophy in 2008.......and look where we're at now.

RINO?

Submitted by ruby2ssday on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 5:17pm.

I think Huntsman is a DNC planted rino. Remember how Harry Reid, unopposed in his primary, spent his own primary campaign money buying TV ads boosting republican Sharon Angle under the guise of "Freinds of Sharon Angle"? He knew she was unelectible and easy to beat so he bought his prefered opponent a slot in the general election. Same thing with Huntsman. Don't fall for it again!

Submitted by ThePickle on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 5:47pm.

When the opposistion starts picking your candidates its time to run screaming the other way. They did it in 2008 with McCain and are trying to do it this election cycle with Huntsman.

Beware liberals singing the praises of Republican primary candidates.

After all, the SAME thing happened in 2007 when the press pushed for McCain to win the nomination against Obama...and it was INEVITABLE that McCain would LOSE against him.

This is the SAME strategy used then!
