Roll Call 'Political Wire' Features Cartoon Depicting Nazis Winning World War 2 If U.S. Had Balanced Budget Requirement Then

Roll Call "Political Wire" editor Taegan Goddard selected a drawing by liberal Arizona Daily Star political cartoonist David Fitzsimmons for his August 1 "Cartoon of the Day."

The cartoon (embedded after the page break) depicts a battle-scarred U.S. Capitol and White House in 1942 outside of which Nazi and Japanese Empire flags fly in lieu of the Stars and Stripes. A speech balloon coming from the Capitol dome reads, "At least we didn't go into debt," while the caption reads "If Congress had passed the Tea Party's Balanced Budget Amendment in 1940."

Liberals may be fond of that talking point, even though it's patently false and Goddard should know it.

From the Republican Study Committee website:

One proposed balanced budget amendment sponsored by RSC member Rep. Joe Walsh (IL-08), H.J.Res 56, would require the President to submit and Congress to enact a balanced budget, cap federal spending at 18% of GDP, and prevent future federal tax increases. Congress could only waive these provisions by a two-thirds vote, except in times of declared war or by three-fifths majority during times of military conflict. It would also require a three-fifths majority to raise the federal debt limit.

Congress swiftly declared war on Japan and Germany in December 1941. If Walsh's amendment were in effect then, the declaration of war would negate the peacetime need for a two-thirds vote to spend over 18% in GDP, raise taxes, or balance the budget.

Fitzsimmons has had more outrageous cartoons, however. On July 27, Fitzsimmons fantasized about President Obama sending in a Navy SEAL team to assassinate Tea Party Republicans:

Ok, next time we fight Nazis, raise the debt ceiling.

Until then, do not risk the existence of this nation to merely transfer (share) wealth.

The current regime in the White House is as Fascist as the Nazi Party in Germany was.  Only difference is their name is Democrat Party.

Obama is a RBFSOB if ever there was one, and his puppet master, Soros, is truly a Nazi from the old school.

Many of us here on NB are students of history, to one degree or another, so we smell the black propaganda in the cartoon.

The problem is that history is not often taught with any sort of objectivity (if at all) in many high schools and colleges. That produces a population so ignorant of what "really happened", that they are vulnerable to this sort of agit-prop peddled by Obama's MSM machine.

The US In Worse Shape Facing The NAZI but Not Much

Submitted by Avitar on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 6:45pm.

Late in 1944 or early in 1945 the nation's debt as a percentage of GDP peaked at the highest in history. The accounting may be wrong and the civil war might have been worse but money was much sounder then compared to after eight years of the New Deal.

This year, if it hasn't happened already, we will pass that 1944 point and be in worse shape than when fighting the NAZIs, invading Europe and Japan. From here on through the end of the Obama administration the United States will be in a boundary Zone next to financial failure.

I hope we survive but anyone who tells you we will is just guessing because we have only been near this condition when we were the only surviving industrial economy on earth. Everybody else had been bombed into rubble.

Submitted by lesterwink23 on Mon, 08/01/2011 - 7:30pm.

I'm beyond disgusted with these cretins who can't even bring themselves to label actual terrorists as such but won't hesitate to call for the death of Americans who are guilty of nothing more than wanting an honest government that will live within its means. There's a special place in Hell for scum like Fitzsimmons and other like-minded mouth breathers.

Tell you what dickhead. If Hitler (or one of his Brazilian clones) comes back to life and relaunches World War Two... I guarandamntee that Tea Party activists will be just fine raising the percentage of debt to GDP to defeat the National Socialists all over again.

Changing History Once Again ...

Submitted by DoktorFranken on Tue, 08/02/2011 - 1:14am.

... with the usual Leftist slant. Let's take this "highly likely" scenario one step farther, shall we?

The U.S. has a Balanced Budget Amendment which meant that spending was held back due to that restrictive law. Times were much better since the Depression era eased because of this frugal policy of not spending MORE than the government brought in as revenue. We had plenty of money to pay for Defense when Japan attacked us and Germany sank the U.S. supply ships going to Europe.

But, we found out that Germany and Japan were both working on an atomic bomb so we needed even MORE money to spend to catch up and surpass the Axis nations in their evil quest. But in this war, AMERICANS were patriotic enough (since the Left's ideology had not yet infiltrated our citizens) to ''go to war'' right here at home (as opposed to ''going shopping at the mall'') and bought MORE War Bonds which the ever patriotic Hollywood folks tirelessly sold across the entire nation.

We then raised not only enough money for the BOMB, but for the historic Invasion of Normandy as well - all thanks to PATRIOTIC AMERICANS.

the content of nonsensical cartoons like this or claims by the Dems about how many millions of jobs Obama "saved" or how we would be in some cataclysmic Depression if it weren't for Obama/Pelosi/Reid, are exactly the idiots who would vote for Obama again anyway. Thinking individuals who see the raging unemployment, foreclosures, their homes worth less than their mortgage, etc., know all too well who's responsible and will vote accordingly in 2012.
