MRC-TV: Bozell Discusses Debt Crisis Bias on 'Fox & Friends'

By NB Staff | July 29, 2011 | 11:22

A  A

"When, oh, when is a Republican going to stand up" and call the liberal media on their lies about the debt ceiling debate, NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell lamented on this morning's "Fox & Friends."

Bozell was reacting to a clip of Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) answering a misleading and biased question by CBS's Bob Schieffer (video follows page break; MP3 audio here):

STEVE DOOCY, "Fox & Friends" anchor: So the narrative over the last couple of weeks has been Barack Obama, the adult in the room, he's a compromiser. On the other side, those rotten Republicans!

BRENT BOZELL, Media Research Center (MRC) founder: You know, Steve, I'm watching that video clip of Sen. Kyl and I'm just wondering, when, oh, when is a Republican going to stand up to a Bob Schieffer and look him right in the face on national television, on live national television, and say, "Bob, you're lying, it isn't true"?  It's not that we have a difference of opinion, it's not that you're playing devil's advocate, it's that you're offering something that is not true: to say that the Republicans are the Party of No. The Republicans are the only people, the only party that's offering solutions whether you like them or not. They're the only ones trying to resolve this!

DOOCY: Absolutely. The Republicans in the House passed Cut, Cap and Balance. It's sitting right there on [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid's desk if he wants to do something, work on that.

BOZELL: But, Steve, what has Harry Reid said? What have the Democrats said. They've said no, and said it's dead-on-arrival.

At that point, Doocy showed viewers a graphic from an MRC study of media coverage from July 1-22 on the debt impasse showing that 56 stories on the major broadcast networks mainly blamed Republicans for the debt ceiling deadlock while only 17 blamed Democrats.

The Other Big Lie - Default

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 11:48am.

Any responsible President, including Jimmy Carter, would have issued numerous public statements stressing that the United States will not default on debt issued by the Treasury.  It seems that every time I turn on the television all I hear is talk about a possible default.

If the media were honest...

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 11:59am.

They would be playing that Harry Reid rant about how important it is NOT to raise the debt limit (2006 I think). How it would force raising taxes, be horrible, and harm the economy!

ABC's J. Karl did in April(?)

Submitted by Red Jeep on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:22pm.

When asked about what he did in 2006 Reid replied:

“I shouldn’t have done that. I’m kinda embarrassed I did. It was a political maneuver by we Democrats. The Republicans were in power – there were more of them,” Reid said. “The president voted when he was in the Senate the same way. I heard him apologize for it. We all should take a look at how we handle these issues, but that doesn’t take into consideration the numerous times, the numerous times I voted to raise the debt ceiling. The one time I tried to make a political issue of it, I wish I hadn’t." http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/04/harry-reid-embarrassed-about-20...

Democrats are famous for

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:32pm.

Democrats are famous for doing these things and then turning tables and saying yeah, but that doesn't mean Republicans should do the same thing now....THIS TIME we should put politics aside.

Dingy Harry is deplorable, with his meeker-than Tom Daschle delivery disguising the venom that lies beneath.

Submitted by aposematic on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 11:47am.

Definition of compromise to a Democrat means Republicans cave and give in to everything the Democrats want. When Republicans balk at giving in to everything the Democrats want, the Democrats stomp their feet, scream bloody murder, and shout I hate you. And, of course, all of this childish behavior is parroted, embellished, and promoted in the LSM as the Republicans never compromising and mean child and granny haters. Name one time the Democrats have ever compromised on anything, let alone their ideology. Waiting....

Good clip! Excellent & great job!

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 11:55am.

Great points & glad it got coverage.

NB: I would change the cover clip are to include the split screen w/ Steve Doocy & Brent. More dynamic shot & I think more people will click on it!

Default is a fabrication

Submitted by Djinn1975 on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:07pm.

from the left that demands the ultimate goal, debt ceiling increase. Just look at how it's played out. It started with roughly $4 trillion in cuts coupled with roughly $1 trillion in taxes, and a couple of weeks later, after beating the 'anything with taxes is a non-starter' idea into their thick skulls, taxes have magically disappeared. Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, and the rest of the republicans need to wake up and smell the reality that there is no compromising, no deal to be made with these fools.

So the ONLY alternative is a no vote on raising the debt ceiling, the HOR can accomplish a great many things with this magical vote. Stop spending as soon as the vote is counted and recorded, force the government to focus spending on the essentials, defense, social security, and debt interest payments. It would be nice to finally see some backbone from the republicans.

Add to Øbama's legacy in 2012: The first MULATTO, one term, worst U.S. President ever. Your vote ensures the trifecta.

Truth in Numbers

Submitted by jaywl on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:10pm.

I keep seeing references to Republican intransigence, stubbornness, and similar words. I used Google to do an advanced search for the exact words "Republican intransigence" and "Democratic intransigence." I was shocked, shocked I tell you. One was 53,900 hits. The other was 2,690 hits. Which is which?

I know each hit is not an instance of media distortion, but I would guess most are. Would a more accurate search on LexisNexis show like results? Such a wide disparity leaves me to wonder how a twenty-to-one ratio would allow any of the worst offenders to claim impartiality at all.

Call Schieffer out

Submitted by gwalt on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 12:44pm.

Mr. Bozell,

Let's call Schieffer out. And Lauer, Stephie and the others by name with their faces on ads calling them biases and dishonest. The sooner we start playing Alinsky on them, the sooner they back off.

Good to see, but..

Submitted by retrocon on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 1:14pm.

The fact is simple... some republicans, especially those who have been there "too long," are afraid of the press.

They have not yet come to the realization that no matter what they do, the MSM will perform a hatchet job on them. Soooo, they continue to cater, in hopes that, well, maybe the hatchet will be a little duller this time, and maybe it'll take a couple of extra whacks before their heads pop off.

Shame, really.

Williams/Chuck Todd's exchange -- blame the R's

Submitted by Gary Hall on Fri, 07/29/2011 - 2:49pm.

First - Brent Bozell's opening comment is the "bringing the bacon home" point of the day/year/decade:

  • Bozell: when is a Republican going to stand up to a Bob Schieffer and look him right in the face on national television, on live national television, and say, "Bob, you're lying, it isn't true"?

That is what conservatives out to be doing each and every time they have a microphone in front of their mouth.

Moving on. .

Now - the exchange between Brian Williams and Todd -- 'blame the Tea Party" theme.  Yes Chuck, it's hard to sell much of anything that looks like a tax hike to that constituency.

How about the other side? Is the national MSM even remotely curious about how difficult it is for Obama or the Democratic leadership - Pelosi and Reid , etc - to sell any broad spending cuts or entitlement reform to the Democrats. . their net roots - the MoveOn.org folks, the DailyKos folks, the SEIU Union, the teacher's unions, the Soros crowd, the minority community?

The party of "no" is the Democratic party.

The other party of "no," is the national MSM.
