Boston Globe's Pierce: 'Half the Country Sinks' While GOP Denies Global Warming

"Today on the program, we'll ask whether Americans are losing the skills of true debate and with it a central pillar of this democracy," BBC's Jonny Dymond informed listeners of the May 15 "Americana" podcast.

Yet when it came to Dymond's guests, there was no dissent from the liberal line.

Take guest  Charles Pierce, a Boston Globe columnist and author of "Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free."

During his segment, Pierce decried the state of debate in America over global warming lamenting that "it is impossible to accept the reality of global climate change and get nominated in the Republican Party."

"We're saying Mother Nature doesn't exist and by God we're going to be sitting here armored in our ignorance while half the country sinks," Pierce quipped, chalking up Mississippi River flooding to global warming.

In addition to Pierce, Dymond profiled debate champion and liberal New York Times reporter Mark Oppenheimer and ran a gauzy segment about the late liberal writer Norman Mailer.

"it is impossible to accept

Submitted by Beukeboom on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 4:41pm.

"it is impossible to accept the reality of global climate change and get nominated in the Republican Party"

And Pierce commits a logical fallacy.

This is what is commonly referred as the "begging the question" fallacy. Since it has not been established that global warming (Pierce is actually referring to the "global warming" controversy using the environmentalists' redefinition of "global climate change") is a "reality" the whole point Pierce was trying to make in this statement becomes invalid.

Also, someone explain to Pierce some little facts:

1) Global climate change has been occurring for all time and will continue to occur whether humanity is around or not [this is an established fact]

2) Human beings cannot control global climate change [another established fact]

3) The flooding Mississippi River is occurring due to RISING water levels, NOT a "sinking country." [yet another established fact]

And Pierce is an alleged experienced debater?

Pierce has a credibility problem and seems to wish to be a shining example of how stupidity is a virtue as defined by his book.

Submitted by Demonhunter on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 5:46pm.

"it is impossible to accept the reality of global climate change and get nominated in the Republican Party"

Pierce is sloppy or lying; first of all it is AGW, anthroprogenic global warming; and particularly the totally failed theory of CO2 driven AGW that Republican voters object to. Further, it is the massive cost and massive government intrusion which even the true believers admit will make an insignificant difference, and the fact that global warming may actually be a net benefit; that leads us not to embrace their phony cause.

And, yes, Republican voters reject this nonsense because they can read, and they understand what "trick" and "hide the decline" mean. It's a shame that liberals seem unable or unwilling to accept obvious evidence.

How arrogant of these people to think the climate in the last how many years is exactly the way it should be. We only have records for about the last 150 years.

Just answer this question, how did the ice ages end if not for global warming??????

Remember, according to the so-called "experts" back in the 70's, we were starting a new ice age and global COOLING was occurring. They'll probably flip-flop on this in 20 years.

No, that's why it's "climate change" now

Submitted by Rover on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 5:24pm.

They learned their lesson with the temperature downturn in the last couple of years, that's why they're saying "climate change" rather than "Global Warming."

Now when it's a touch colder than the norm, they can say it's climate change. A touch warmer, and it's climate change.

More rain, climate change. Less rain, climate change.

More tornadoes... guess what? etc. etc. ad nauseum.

In short, whenever there's weather, they can point to it and say it validates their talking point. That it didn't do what they predicted last year-gloss over that. It's about never having to admit they were wrong, that the models they're using didn't predict the events and, therefore, are not worth anything.

But, of course, without the models, their arguments that humans are responsible for what's happening are only faith-based. Nothing backs this theory up any more. It should have gone away, and would have if we had a media what was responsible and competent.

Global Climate Change - of course it occurring

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 7:02pm.

Global Climate Change - of course it occurring. Who wouldn't believe that?

Oh, but this idiot Pierce, has mastered  the new game in town. As folks here at NB are well aware, just a couple years back, we learned that the radical anthropogenic (man-made)global warming (AGW) alarmist crowd conspired (successfully) to change the label to man made climate change.

Now, in the last year it's simply referred to only as "climate change."

  • Pierce decried the state of debate in America over global warming lamenting that "it is impossible to accept the reality of global climate change and get nominated in the Republican Party."

Friends - one thing is for certain; global climate change is a constant.  I suspect that in fact, everyone believes in "global climate change" as a naturally occurring process of  dear ole Mother Earth's many cycles.

Realists should call the radical alarmists out on their game. A simple response might be, "Oh, surely you misspeak. Everyone believes in global climate change - it's a naturally occurring cycle. You must be referring to that unproven, and greatly debated, theory of man-made climate climate change. Next time, why don't you say what you mean?"

(;~/ gary

PS -  Jonny Dymond queried, ".. not since the 1930's."  Well, Jonny -  that was before AGW. What about 1927? 1844? Those darn weather patterns.

Might the next noticeable climate change be one of some serious cooling?

Global cooling

Submitted by deadeyedan on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 9:02pm.

You have a point, GH. The most serious flaw of the AGW crowd is that they are crying wolf. The threat of a Maunder-like solar minimum is very real as evidenced by the recent (last several years) creepily sluggish flare/magnetic activity on the sun.

http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2009/03sep_sunspots/

We have been preparing for warming while nature may be plotting a different course. If this is the case, shorter growing seasons and greater need for winter fuel would be the norm. Who's getting ready for either of these scenarios?

The sun's activity is dictated by its multi-tiered motions of ionic plasma which must vary by the amount of rotational velocity imparted by the exchange of angular momentum with the sun's revolution about the center of the solar system's mass. When the sun is farther from that "barycenter" it revolves slower and rotation is faster. The current situation is ominously similar to what was occurring as the Medieval Optimum began to wane. Back then, the earth was not as close to the end of the current interglacial period as we are now and that means this time it could be worse.

But how would you go about telling anyone? By now you would be dismissed as just another climate crank if you pointed that out owing to the flurry of alarmist nonsense that we've been besieged with since the '80's. The continuation of the siege on those who question the AGW faith can be witnessed here:
