Fmr. Clinton WH Counsel Davis: Liberals Should Stop Cheap Shots at Bush Over bin Laden
This morning on WMAL's "Morning Majority" program, former Clinton White House counsel Lanny Davis slammed liberals who were taking partisan pot-shots at former President George W. Bush in the wake of Osama bin Laden's killing on Sunday.
While Davis didn't name names, he made veiled references to MSNBC and its "Last Word" host Lawrence O'Donnell. O'Donnell, you may recall, bashed former President Bush on his Monday evening "Last Word" program, insisting that President Bush had dismissed bin Laden's capture or killing as unimportant to the war on terror as early as 2002.
But Bush's rhetoric downplaying bin Laden was strategic, not to be taken completely at face value Davis argued.
Here's the relevant transcript (emphases mine, audio embedded below page break):
LANNY DAVIS, former Clinton adviser: I also think that the cheap shots against George Bush, who, full disclosure, is an old friend of mine from college -- I didn't vote for him and I disagree with him on most things -- but there are some types of Democrats that can't seem to resist the cheap shot opportunity. And George Bush and his administration deserve a lot of credit for setting up the intelligence apparatus that directly or indirectly led to this great accomplishment by President Obama.
[...]
BRYAN NEHMAN, host: Does this mean that enhanced interrogation does work? I mean, are we giving any credit to enhanced interrogation in finding out this information?
[...]
DAVIS: ...[T]he fact is that George W. Bush set this apparatus up, probably took a chance that it might be illegal, and because of that surveillance capability and because, we are certainly told, that because of these enhanced interrogation techniques -- which I always thought was equivalent to torture and was opposed to -- looking back retrospectively, it looks like, at least indirectly, that led to the lead that led us to the courier that led us to Osama bin Laden.
So who knows whether, at the moment in time that they decided to use these techniques -- it's easy to second-guess them -- but we Democrats at least shouldn't be running clips of George Bush saying that he didn't care about Osama bin Laden when clearly that was a strategic message that we weren't going to judge our success on whether we killed this guy.
And then this cheap shot on one of the cable networks running the clip as if George Bush didn't care about killing Osama bin Laden is a Democratic, partisan Left at its very worst, and I wanted to make that comment as a strong liberal Democrat that on both sides of the spectrum here, if this isn't a moment to say time-out on partisan cheap-shots, I don't know what is.
CLIFF MAY, guest co-host, president of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies: You know, I think that's right, and again I salute you on that as well.

The killing of Osama will not change the WOT one bit. The attacks will continue, recruitment will continue, Islam will still produce terrorists.

Lanny Davis never did strike me as a far left flaming lib. He did defend the Clintons but he was never all that partisan.

That said I always liked him. Unlike many on the left he is NOT a hater but a strong proud liberal who has always defended Clinton and liberalism with well thought out arguments (he is a true believer). He believes in his heart that EIT is not the way to go as in the long run it will damage the country (for the record I disagree but his opposition is based on his principles). He is also a very smart man who knows darn well that the petty political sniping at Bush and the inability to admit that EIT did help bring down Bin Laden and rather than argue the cost/benefit of EIT rationally this blind opposition and mocking is hurting the Dems big time and is trying to get his side to shut up. Good luck with that Lanny, you will be insulted non stop today as a Bush toady for those civil remarks.

That actually increases a little bit of respect for Davis from me and I didn't have any to begin with. So now he's got a couple of marks of respect. That's very big of him.

One of the few people on the left you can honestly disagree with and still respect. He's not a cheap shot artis like O'Donnell and is willing to step up and take a stand even if it goes against the MSM theme of the day. Bravo Lanny - nice job

Lanny Davis represents what political dialog should be about. We can disagree without being disagreeable. Lannie approaches political differences with maturity and respect for an opposing opinion. With all the political fighting, it is refreshing to see his comments. Equally refreshing to see conservatives give President Obama his due for making a courageous decision. Wouldn't it be nice to quit bashing and start rolling up our sleeves in order to get some problems solved?

This is off topic but I saw this and thought about President Obama and where are his friends who know him from college. He went to Harvard and you just don't hear from those folks.
Lanny Davis has always struck me as pretty much a straight shooter, even though he is a lawyer.

I watched Lanny say much the same on O'Reilly last night. It's so refreshing to see a liberal being at least a wee bit objective. He was being interviewed with dopey Leslie Marshall, who stated the following:
"Military intelligence has found," Marshall said, "that nine out of ten people they interrogated gave up the same information when they used traditional methods. So should we stoop to the level of those we are fighting?" ...
When Lanny countered with his fair and balanced assessment of the efficacy of Bush's policies, and then Bill O hammered her, she looked like a wounded schoolgirl who just lost her lunch money.
Leslie, I have a question for you, Ms. Jackass:
How exactly do you equate pouring water up the nostrils of a filthy camel-jockey with any or all of the following acts?
1. 3000 innocents murdered on 9/11
2. Daniel Pearl's head being cut off on videotape
3. Soldiers and contractor's bodies being burned and hung from the bridge in Fallujah
Am I making myself clear, you vacant-staring mouth-breather?
