MSNBC's Brewer Marks Good Friday by Highlighting Pastor Who Won't Sign Marriage Licenses Until Same-sex Marriage Is Legal
Towards the Good Friday edition of the 12 p.m. hour of programming she anchors, MSNBC's Contessa Brewer highlighted a Louisville Disciples of Christ minister who refuses to sign off on marriage licenses until same-sex marriage is legal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Brewer, the daughter of a Baptist minister, is an advocate for same-sex marriage.
As you can see from the video embedded after the page break -- given the biased title "Church takes a stand on marriage equality" by MSNBC -- Brewer failed to bring on a minister with an opposing perspective nor to sharply question Dr. Derek Penwell on his position:

What's Holy Week for, if not to provide an excuse for everyone who wants to criticize Christianity in general and Catholics in particular?
DBCC is not a serious Christian church.
For one thing, on its website it says
"We worship a God of radical love"
and
"We are not offering the way, only a way." (emphasis mine)
(What kind of Christian Church, doesn't teach that Christ is the way, the truth and the life?)
IOW, feel-good pop-culture Christianity.
Yeah, this little church is going to send shock-waves around the world. \sarc
I just love how Contessa gets all pumped up and uses her hands to emphasize "taking a stand!" and "refusing to sign ANY marriage certificates, " etc. She's really into this!!
It's almost like she's making a speech, not reporting the news!

Somehow I think the Lord won't be writing her name in the Book of Life until she repents of her unbiblical stance. Just my opinion...

Who cares if this minister will not sigh a certficate because of what ever, their are plenty of Pastors/Ministers who would sign. Personally I would find another church.
Well stated, MB

I can drag out any kind of kook from the woodwork and proclaim any kind of blasphemous garbage, but it doesn't mean it's true. Universalism is the new "fad" among people like this "Pastor" and others like Rob Bell. Given the choice between the Word of God and these guys, I'll take God's word.
THIS GUY'S A PUTZ-ER, NOT A PASTOR!

Sickening. I am so tired of pastors, priests, ministers, rabbis pushing their personal agendas while "In uniform," or in the pulpit. They are called to have ONE agenda only, and that is to serve God and preach His Word. I have been asked many times, what is my "Stand" on homosexual marriage? My answer is simple - I have NO stand since the term "Gay marriage" is an oxymoron. The purpose of marriage is to procreate. Homosexuals do not procreate....they recruit.
Speaking of marons, what can I say abouiContessa the Cretin that has not already been said.? She needs a sign above her desk stating, "It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Is there a better example of what is wrong with "Journalism" today than this ignoramus?

My guess is that this man is not ordained in any Christian denomination, but just calls himself a "pastor" and started his own church.
Pardon me if I'm uninformed: are Protestant pastors "ordained" like Catholic priests?
Depends on the denomination,

Depends on the denomination, plus some pretty much "ordain" ministers but don't use the term "ordination."
A shame how liberal the DofC have become. It was the church that Nelle Reagan raised Ronald Reagan in.
Thanks for the clarification,

Thanks for the clarification, Ken.
I missed that the name of the denomination was "Disciples of Christ." That's why I thought he had pretty much started his own church.

How To Become A Real Christian Ordained Pastor or Ordained Minister
Oh hell, get it for "free"
Then again here is a real Protestant Pastor.
First Protestant Pastor in Chuuk Ordained as Bishop
Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!"

"The purpose of marriage is to procreate. Homosexuals do not procreate....they recruit."
Since homosexuals constitute only around 2% of the population, it seems fair to say their recruiting drive over the course of history has been remarkably unsuccessful.
[BTW, same-sex marriages are recognized in several jurisdictions. So "Gay Marriage" is not an oxymoron.]

Hi Jer
Submitted by Lord-come-soon-... on Fri, 04/22/2011 - 9:20pm.
I think from a Orthodox Christian point of view, "Gay Marriage" is an oxymoron because of the Biblical definition of marriage. Marriage also has more of a purpose than to simply procreate. To a born-again Christian like myself, my marriage is a model of Christ's relationship with His children, and one day in Heaven we will become the bride of Christ. I haven't seen you on here for a while. How have you been?

I think from an Orthodox Christian point of view, homosexual behavior is itself sinful--violative of the Word of God and inimical to the teachings of Christ. As such, the whole question of gay marriage from that perspective seems superfluous, having failed to clear even the threshold theological hurdles.
As far as the pupose of marriage being more than procreation, we agree. I restated Herbster's contrary position in my post.

after all, it is her signature. But I would look for another church, because a preacher who withholds one of the fundamentals of the church is killing her own church. There just aren't enough libbers in Kentucky, even in Louisville.
Too bad that Jesus Christ, her savior, is seconded to the cause of marriage that her Bible condemns.

Both Brewer and Penwell need
Submitted by MikeB on Fri, 04/22/2011 - 11:55pm.
Both Brewer and Penwell need to be excommunicated by their respective churches. If they claim to be Christian, they need to read and heed their Bibles. Homosexuality was condemned in the Hebrew Scriptures ("Old Testament") as well as in the Greek Scriptures ("New Testament"). Under the Mosaic Law, homosexuals were to be stoned to death. In the New Testament, the Christians did not have the temporal power to condemn homosexuals to death, but were not to "be mislead. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes ("effiminates" in the King James Version), nor men who lie with men ("abusers of themselves with mankind" KJV), nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God's kingdom." 1 Cor 6:9. in 1 Cor 5:11, Paul said to "quit mixing in company with" and forbade eating with "anyone who is called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or anidolator or a riviler or a drunkard or an extortioner ..." It doesn't get much plainer. So, if these two want to be Christians, fine, then they should be Christians. They don't get to pick and choose which sins are okay, and which sins aren't. And Christians shouldn't be concerned with what the ungodly think about them, they should be concerned with what God thinks about them.
I hate it that Baptists are getting such a bad rap.

I know you all want to lump Baptists with "Evangelicals". But we are not. Also, we are not, gay haters and snake handlers. But we ARE Bible thumpers! And no Baptist Minister is female...sorry, nothing against females (God and us Baptist place females on the Pedestal they may not want to be on). Tough, live with it if you are married to a Baptist! The point is, anyone can claim they are anything and the dumb arse Media will run with it!
Nothing wrong with being both!

I grew up in the Baptist Church and share your description as a "Bible thumper", but don't be ashamed of being an evangelical Baptist!
Evangelical |ˌivanˈjelikəl|
Adjective: Of or according to the teaching of the gospel or the Christian religion. • Of or denoting a tradition within Protestant Christianity emphasizing the authority of the Bible, personal conversion, and the doctrine of salvation by faith in the Atonement. • zealous in advocating something.
Noun: a member of the evangelical tradition in the Christian Church
"Here's a minister that breaks the law."
Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 04/23/2011 - 12:19pm.
So, Contessa is basically highlighting a Minister who refuses to follow the law? Just how is that "taking a stand on marriage inequity?" Think about what this man is saying: "I'll perform a marriage ceremony just as I always have, I just won't sign the license." Which means that no one is actually married, although he's still being PAID for his services, for which HE is licensed! Do you know what that's called? FRAUD!
