WaPo Hypes Plight of Woman 'Relying on Planned Parenthood' for Health Care

Doing it's level best to push the meme that Planned Parenthood is a crucial provider of basic medical services for poor women -- and hence deserving of federal taxpayer support -- today's Washington Post devoted one-eighth of page A5 in today's print edition to a photo entitled "Relying on Planned Parenthood."

Depicted is a 24-year-old woman, one Minah Khan, having blood drawn "during a checkup at Planned Parenthood in Washington."

"She says she is unable to afford health insurance and receives all her women's health care at the Planned Parenthood facility, the site of a rally Tuesday in support of D.C. budget autonomy," the caption concluded.

But a quick Internet search shows there are health clinics in the District that provide both primary care and OB/GYN services regardless of ability to pay, such as the ones run by Unity Health Care, Inc., which has 13 locations in the city.

Planned Parenthood, by contrast, has a mere two locations in the District.

Aren't there health clinics

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 12:12pm.

Aren't there health clinics in most U.S. cities and counties (parishes if you're in Louisiana) that can perform checkups for women with limited funds? I do believe there are. This is clearly another misleading propaganda ploy by PP.

Not to mention Medicaid

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:54pm.

Planned Parenthood is in full-scale damage control after that group exposed that PP clinics in 17 major cities do not provide mammograms, even though PP's CEO claimed that it was one of the vital health services it provides.

And the sympathetic MSM will give them all the air time they need.

How about relying on your own initiative in getting a job

and purchasing health care insurance? Why do the Dems love to create classes of people dependent on the government or government subsidized organizations for their day to day existence? Never mind, I just answered my own question.

Hi Squirrel

Submitted by The Irishman on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 12:47pm.

It's apparent the majority of commenters have no idea what Planned Parenthood provides beyond the fallacy they are an abortion factory. To virginia republican, it's just that easy, eh? Just get a job and "poof" -- you're insured. Only the reality is employers aren't required to provide health coverage for their employees, and purchasing insurance as an individual can be prohibitively costly. Got a pre-existing condition? Even more expensive. So those young adults graduating from college in a crappy economy not only can't find work, but can't afford insurance. Planned Parenthood offers services that really help people who need help. If you can look beyond abortion you will clearly see the benefits and importance of this organization.

Actually, what VR suggested isn't easy.

It's tough to get a job and get your own health insurance when you have libs telling you your entire life that "the man" is discriminating against you and you don't stand a chance in life unless you vote libs into office so you can continue to get government checks from a million different social welfare programs financed with taxes taken from "the man".

Obviously not the people you

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 3:16pm.

Obviously not the people you want him to listen to as Planned Parenthood is literally a BILLION Dollar a YEAR organization. Now in terms of liberal speak which you no doubt would understand, how is it that a RICH organization such as PP is charging poor people for services? If taking in a BILLION dollars a year isn't rich, then what is?

Here are some stats from 2008:

"PPFA’s $374.7 million clinic income for the fiscal year ending June 2008"

"PPFA took in over $1 billion in revenues from all sources in the fiscal year running July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008. "

"Over a third, nearly $350 million, came in the form of “Government Grants and Contracts”—your tax dollars and mine. "

"Private donors were responsible for nearly a quarter with “Contributions and Bequests” totaling $244.9 million. “Health Center Income” was the biggest source of revenue (see above) with “Other” bringing in an additional $68.9 million. "

http://www.nrlc.org/news/2009/NRL05/PPAnnualReport.html

Of course this information comes from the wrong source, i.e. the National Right to Life who has an interest in saving lives and not taking them. And something else you don't want to hear is that trope about abortion being only 3% of PP's services is BOGUS. Why? Because in liberal math as PP practices, handing out an Rx is equal in count to an abortion!!!! That's liberal math for you.

"An increasingly common PPFA response is to say that abortion represents only 3% of all the services they provided in 2007. Technically, one can say this if every packet of pills, every test, every exam a client receives is counted as a separate service. But looked at in a more normal way, trying to see what percentage of Planned Parenthood’s customers receive abortions, we get a figure closer to 10.1%.

Even that doesn’t capture the full impact. Abortion is quite often bundled with a number of those other services (the abortion patient often receives and pays for a number of connected services, such as Rh testing, ultrasound, STD testing, the HPV vaccine, a take-home pack of contraceptives). Thus, abortion and abortion-related services account for a much, much bigger piece of the pie than 3% or even 10%."

Taxes?

Unfortunately...

Submitted by retrocon on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:25pm.

Right now, there are a lot of conflicting stories coming out about what Planned Parenthood does or does not provide.

But what we do know is that they DO, absolutely, provide abortions. They DO, absolutely, get mega millions in federal dollars.

They cannot say that not one dollar of federal money goes to abortions unless they do not pay one penny of administrative costs or costs for doctors, facilities, or anyone/thing else that participates in abortions out of those federal dollars.

So, i do not want abortions funded with my tax dollars. Just as you do not want one penny of your money going to buy me, a private citizen, a firearm so that i can potentially save my life (one of the same conditions libtards always claim as a reason for abortion). So, i'll be OK with funding abortions when you are OK with buying me a gun.

Planned Parenthood can simply split off their abortion practice, let the government fund the low-income health services if it must (even that should just be part of various state access programs). Then see if they can continue to do the abortions. That is the proof that our money is supporting the practice.

Tax Dollars

Submitted by The Irishman on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:37pm.

And you really think I'm happy with the way my tax dollars are spent? Since you're interested in making deals, how does this sound? My portion of taxes will pay for Planned Parenthood, while your portion goes to fund the wars. No? I don't want to pay to educate someone else's children either.

So explain why you get to choose how your tax dollars are spent, but I don't.

They're not the only providers

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:35pm.

Planned Parenthood isn't the only provider of "woman's health care." They are not even the most prevalent provider. They are, interestingly enough, the most EXPENSIVE provider, especially to the taxpayer. Planned Parenthood's actual costs exceed just about all other providers available.

Here's a question that none of the Planned Parenthood supporters ever seem to want to answer: WHY should the US taxpayer continue to fund the most expensive provider available? I thought the idea was to LOWER those costs, not continually raise them, as Planned parenthood does.

Exactly, IF PP were not

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 3:59pm.

Exactly, IF PP were no longer contracted by the government to render services to poor people then SOMEONE ELSE WOULD BE. The result would be MORE poor people would be served precisely because another provider would using the same amount of money be able to provide MORE service. I.E. Walgreens, CVS and Walmart via a nurse practitioners AND also the Doc in a box clinics. IF we insist on having a program like Medicaid then at least it should be done cost effectively where such people will get timely and effective service for the money we as taxpayers are shelling out without the self serving, self righteous, moralizing PC BS of Planned Parenthood much less the appearance of impropriety by an organization that has a vested financial interest in the repeat service of abortion. It should be obvious even to the most dimwitted that PP has a financial interest in repeat customers who by the very nature of the high risk behavior they ENABLE (sex without responsibility- not being married) will be exposed to STDs. PP is an enabler since they readily without the parent's permission subject minors to abortion procedures, thus undermining the authority (9th amendment rights - Natural Law) of the parent. The fact they WON'T report the adult impregnator to be charged with rape confirms it.

Just Words

Submitted by jaywl on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 1:17pm.

Reproductive services = termination of reproduction

Women's Health care = health care relating to abortion

Pro-choice = pro-abortion

Right to choose = lack of choice FOR the BABY!

Futility = No matter how many times Planned Parenthood explains to their clients how they actually came to have a fellow human being in the woman's body they can never explain to them why God wants the Baby to stay for awhile or how to avoid be chosen again for that miracle.

So Ken, the real issue here

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 04/13/2011 - 3:20pm.

So Ken, the real issue here at least as I see it is if $350 million comes from government grants and contracts, is PP subject to the same government fee schedule as Medicaid? Given the liberal penchant for over charging, i.e. subsidizing, one service in order to give it FREE to someone else how much is PP getting in over charges so it can perform FREE or reduced fee care to others?

Here's a bigger question that the MSM does not want to ask lest they get an answer they know you and I won't like: How much are they charging the government to treat each "poor" person for their "mamograms, check ups, tests, etc."? Are those fees in line with the UCR (usual, customary and reasonable) fees and IF NOT, are those over charges being used to subsidize abortions? Would that not be a violation of the Hyde Amendment that is normally attached as a rider to all such grants out of HHS?

Planned Parenthood for Men?

Submitted by Harbinger041 on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 3:17am.

Since Planned Parenthood is apparently now being touted as "vital healthcare for poor women" who would otherwise not get it (with abortions on the side), what about the poor MEN who would otherwise not have healthcare?
Can MEN go to Planned Parenthood and receive free healthcare too? If not, why not? Are we all supposed to be equal? No preferential treatment?
Or maybe there will be some "Men-Only" Planned Parenthood Clinics opening up next door... Ah, I got it now...
