WaPo TV Reviewer Grouses About New Show Chronicling 'Selfish' Coupon-clipping Moms

On the surface, TLC's "Extreme Couponing" -- premiering tonight at 9:30 p.m. EDT -- may look to you and me like an innocently voyeuristic look into the lives of fellow Americans who take penny-pinching to the extreme, saving at times hundreds of dollars on grocery store runs.

But that's why we're not TV critics for a liberal metropolitan newspaper.

Washington Post's Hank Stuever worked in a healthy share of left-wing grousing about capitalism and insisted that the coupon-clippers highlighted by the program were insufferably selfish souls.

"Little piggies go to market, and clean up on Aisle 5," the article's online headline snarked.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

"Repulsion may or may not be the show’s ultimate intent, but it stirs up unsettling and complex thoughts, not only about the sins of gluttony and pride, but also about the production and consumption of cheap, processed food," Stuever insisted. "There’s also something to snack on for those of us fretting over an ever-widening wealth gap amid dwindling resources."

But who are these gluttonous people? Some of them are moms of large families:

Each segment of “Extreme Couponing” culminates in a dazzling and literal money shot. Voila! A mother of seven in Spring, Tex., uses her coupons to reduce a bill of $555 to $6.

How, exactly, is it gluttonous to provide for a large family in a way that saves a boatload of money?

Stuever never squares that with his central thesis that so-called extreme couponers are incredibly selfish individuals:

[M]y real beef, which I’m selling for half-off today, is that the subjects of “Extreme Couponing” are never seen stopping at a food bank on the way home to share some of their largess — except once, in the original “Extreme Couponing” special.

Everyone else on the show selfishly stores it away in hyper-organized garages, basements and spare closets — where all the labels must face a certain way, ordered by expiration date, before Mommy can sit down, relax, and clip and file still more coupons. “In a zombie apocalypse, we’d be fine for two years,” chuckles the overweight boyfriend of an extreme couponer in St. Louis, after he counts up 50 bags of snack chips.

When asked about this, a TLC publicist said future episodes might try to leaven the show with charitable impulses. The Texas mother of seven, the publicist noted, recently organized a shipment of care packages to Japan’s earthquake disaster victims.

Care packages of what? (Febreze? Apple Jacks?) The last thing “Extreme Couponing” exhibits is a sense of caring — to say nothing of sharing.

Perhaps what really bothers Stuever is the self-reliance and pluck of these enterprising individuals, who choose to use the free market capitalist system to the benefit of themselves and their families rather than sit around and carp about how much America sucks.

Update: TLC promotional video added below to give you a flavor for what the show is about and who exactly tees Stuever off.

Wow. $555 to $6??? My personal best was paying just the tax on a bunch of personal care items which Vons doubled the coupons on.

As to his gripe on the cheap processed food that is making us fat? Why oh why does it NEVER occur to these pinheads that food companies, just like ALL businesses, are in it to make a profit/grow? And that gov't runs the field, mandating everything, so they need to get at the root of the problem, not attempt to shame us

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

This is The Coupon Whisperer himself back from another day of his own "Extreme Couponing." Conservatively estimate that I bought over $300 worth of stuff today for only about 20 bucks, mostly sales tax. Of course my best "quality" score was this very laptop I am now posting on. A brand new Compaq Presario I got a year ago for FREE via couponing.

And now back to watching "Extreme Couponing."

"There’s also something to snack on for those of us fretting over an ever-widening wealth gap amid dwindling resources."

Maybe Stuever should take that 'dwindling resources' thing up with the current resident of the White House.

So, using coupons more than some miserable hand-wringing lefty hack thinks you should is now considered to be selfish?

Given the current lousy economic situation that is being needlessly prolonged, if not deepened, by the policies of Obama (who I'm sure Stuever thinks is the greatest thing since beer was combined with pretzels), I would say saving money anywhere possible is not being selfish, but prudent.

Seriously, is there anything that goes on anywhere in America that these people won't find some reason to gripe and moan about?

It really is pathetic that

Submitted by Matthew Sheffield on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 11:52am.

It really is pathetic that Stuever seems to think this show is bad for low-income people. In fact, it is a great thing since it helps provide money-saving tips to those who really want to stretch their dollars.

Stuever wants the poor to be on welfare so they can purchase organic locally grown produce instead.

Notice his derision

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 12:09pm.

For the orderly storing of the food items purchased, too. Laying in a food supply is a very smart investment (to use a word democrats are so fond of)....inflation is going to hit the boards bit time this summer, we just bought a small freezer and are stocking up on chicken, pork butts, etc. that are now on sale, because I expect all meat to rise at least $.50 a lb. in the next three months.

I suppose Steuver just picks up the phone and orders whatever he wants without regard to cost (as you say, locally grown organic....how chic!).

I marvel at the women who are able to shop like that. I'd imagine if the "savings" were computed per hour of effort, it would be quite a handsome salary for Steuver to scoff at. (Oops, probably shouldn't have typed that, I'm sure some democrat will try to tax it now).

I'm pretty good about "coupons" for Costco (like $50 off on my camera)...and of course the BB&B 20% off coupon that comes in the mail. And my mom always asks me to go to websites to print her off bonus store coupons (like for Macy's)....this Steuver person should be cheering these women for stretching their food dollars instead of looking down his long, limousine nose. How utterly typical.

The poor

Submitted by kinijane on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:53pm.

Since the inception of the war on poverty, we now have more poor than ever, what baffles me is the folks who are considered poor keep voting to keep themselves poor. The "poor" don't have to worry about clipping coupons, the welfare checks, food stamps, free cell phones, and the help in paying the electric, gas and water bill keep coming. The majority of them have big screen tv's, x-boxes and a car in the drive. Its the coupon clipping folks that are helping keep them up.

So he can't stand the thought of a normal family trying to make ends meet. He doesn't have the faintest clue of what it takes to manage a family of seven. It's not the coupons or the saving that this guy is upset about--it's the lifestyle. A family with a mom and dad with children living life in America. That's his angle.

Does he stop by the food bank? Does he personally contribute to charities? How much has he donated to the Japan relief effort? What causes are his priority? I really don't care and it really isn't any of my business, but I do have a problem with these writers nit-picking at everyone's flaws as if they are the uber-superiorists teaching the peasants how to live.

My first reaction was why did

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:22pm.

My first reaction was why did this fool object to folks trying to spend less for their food and other goods. After all, don't people who get food stamps and welfare spend little to none of their money on groceries and household goods? Then it occurred to me: welfare people are spending OPM, not their own; and the couponers are trying to spend less of their own money, money that they earned.  Also, the couponers are doing it on their own, not depending on the government to do it for them.  So, of course a commie-lib would object to this activity.

Additionally, it's even worse than your point, what if advertisers cut out the celebs/elites and went directly to the customer. This is what coupons do, TV doesn't come into play which such people and as a result no one is listening to a TV personality hawking a product for the big bucks. Oh the humanity, it slices right at the heart of the elite's money pile.

BTW- This Washington Post employee is actually grousing at the only thing that keeps the Sunday print edition going, it's the coupons STUPID!!!! Were it not for the coupon section, the circulation of the Sunday edition would be as pathetic as the daily editions. In true to form idiocy, this liberal believes that most people are buying the Sunday edition to read his crappy opinion or the liberal slant on the news. NO THEY ARE NOT! And the idiot better get his act together because IF Groupon and other web sites begin significantly cutting into Sunday print coupons his job is gone like all the other journalists that have lost their jobs. Did I type that out loud? OK--I am standing by it. These gals may--MAY--spend more time than they save money...or maybe that isn't even true. I am in awe of them, actually. Why should some rich asshat columnist, WITH A JOB, tell them to take it to the food bank or eat less boxed food. Jeez--this country. I mean it!

At the other end of the spectrum--more money than sense--I watched Bravo's Pregnant in Heels and this couple with huge teeth hired a woman to bring in think tanks, then a focus group, then a party of their friends to decide on a name for their new baby. Of course, they picked the names they liked at first. Can you IMAGINE the money this cost. But it's their money--and it was darned entertaining! I cried at the stupidity!

Hey--maybe they could give the names not chosen...Steven, Miles, Holden, Bode--to a poor family.

Hank Stuever - Liberal Malcontent

Submitted by Boil It Down on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 5:59pm.

Stuever certainly does get worked up venting his ire at common sense mothers who shop responsibly. He must have expended a lot of mental energy constructing these villains of the grocery aisles in order to go tilting at his imaginary capitalist windmills.

Do you suppose Stuever has ever studied the effects of anti-capitalist societies on grocery shopping? Do you think he has the slightest inkling of what it takes to raise a family?

With his indignation toward this slightest part of capitalism, he must be a real joy to be around at parties.

Perhaps he's just been behind one too many coupon redeemers in the check lane and that is what set off this nonsensical malcontent rant. What ever the case, I wouldn't invite him out for drinks for fear of becoming a target. -bid-

My only problem with couponing

Submitted by ArcherB on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:52pm.

I feel it's gaming the system. Companies put out coupons to get people to try their product when they would normally walk right by it or buy a competitor's product. When you use coupons to purchase 50 of an item that was intended for you to just try, you are abusing the coupons for a purpose that was not intended by the manufacturer. Stacking coupons can be even worse. Stacking is when you buy a product using a manufacturer's coupon and a store coupon. Most of the time, the coupon will read, "not valid with any other offer", but the system still takes both coupons most of the time. It may also be gaming the system when you buy 50 newspapers at $2.00/each for no other reason than to grab that single $3.00 off coupon. Again, the manufacturer did not intend on a single family purchasing 50 packs of Charmin. The wanted shoppers to try Charmin instead of Angel Soft with the hope that the shopper will switch to Charmin permanently.

With that said, my wife and I are becoming "extreme couponers", but we still have a lot to learn. When we normally spend about $150/week on groceries, this last trip we spent $100 for a week and a half's worth of groceries. Do we feel guilty? Not really. Coupon stacking bugs me a bit, but we don't do a whole lot of that. For the most part we make our shopping list and then go out looking for coupons. If we have yogurt on the list and there is a coupon for Yoplait, we'll buy that instead of Dannon. The only change really need to make is dumping brand loyalty. We buy the brand that has the coupon.

What we do NOT do is look at the coupons and base our shopping list on that. When you do that, you end up spending more money because you buy a bunch of crap you wouldn't normally buy. For example, if we found a coupon for potato chips and bought them, we would be losing money because we almost never buy potato chips. Or if Pur water filters had a coupon, we shouldn't dump our Britta pitcher just because Pur has their filters on sale.

If you buy 50 of ANYTHING because of a coupon, even if your "coupon stacking" or "extreme couponing", then you got more problems than coupons! WTF are you talking about? You cant use two of the same coupon for an item-you can use two DIFFERENT coupons, store/manufacturer, special item, etc, so sometimes youre using 2 or more, but theyre different in different ways. whatever, any little bit helps us po' folk, and even if we're not too poor, whats the difference? Gaming the what?

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 4:19pm.

Manufactures and retailers offer coupons for one reason only: to reduce existing stock. Manufactures and retailers need to get rid of excess stock, and fast, so that they don't lose money on overstocked items. They use coupons to "incite" us into buying that overstocked item, when most people didn't want that product (due mostly to it being overpriced.).

As the price of an item, even with a coupon, is greater than the manufacturing costs or wholesale price, they're not losing a single dime, even with "coupon stacking," which is nothing more than a manufacture's coupon combined with a retailer's coupon. Both the manufacturer and the retailer need to reduce their overstocked items so both offer coupons, sometimes for the very same product, because they need to SELL that item, even if the profit from that item itself is almost nonexistent. Even then, nether the manufacture nor the retailer is losing money. So, other than sales tax, what "system" is actually being "gamed?"

I imagine that this whining, sniveling, liberal has no problem though with illegal aliens using food stamps to buy beer or cigarettes. This moron is angry because the women saved some money and he didn't.

Good grief

Submitted by mnemosyne23 on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 4:13pm.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? THIS is what has this lefty snot up in arms?

I'd particularly like to take issue with this statement:

"There’s also something to snack on for those of us fretting over an ever-widening wealth gap amid dwindling resources."

Hey, lefty dingbat!  Do you know who could really benefit from using coupons?  POOR PEOPLE.  You know, so they can save their money?  And maybe, I don't know, use some of that hard-saved cash to pay the mortgage instead of defaulting?  Or to pay the electric bill instead of going without heat or hot water?  You are familiar with the concept of "saving money," aren't you?  Also known as thrift?  Living within your means?  "A penny saved is a penny earned?"  Is any of this getting through, Hank, or would you like me to use smaller words and a Fisher Price-style font?

Hank, I realize you're a leftist idiot of the highest order, but even you must have at one time owned a piggy bank.  The fact that you squandered all your hard-earned paper route money on autographed pictures of Jane Fonda and Michael Dukakis has simply soured you on other people's successful attempts to save wads and wads of cash.  But buddy, that's your problem.  Go find yourself a state-subsidized shrink and work out your issues on your own time.  Quit wasting ours.

That's exactly what I

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 6:12pm.

That's exactly what I thought, and maybe that is our problem: we thought. Obviously the author of that article didn't put on his thinking cap that day because, duh, if you're going to whine about the "ever widening income gap" then, obviously, the idea of encouraging the poor to use coupons would help reduce that wealth gap.

I'm surprised that Lefties aren't tearing this guy a new one because articles this over-the-top with stupidity do little to push the socialist agenda really help make a mockery of the media and the Left in general.

Of course, even libs are entitled to stupid, uninformed opinions.

Ah, see? That right there is the problem. The gentleman donated the extra goods to his CHURCH, and we all know that churches are vile, bigoted havens of vice, infested with pedophile priests and homosexual-hating gargoyles.  Clearly any items donated to his church for the "needy" were actually donated for use in secret rituals intended to funnel money into the pockets of oil executives by magically starving old people and small children through the power of perverse "faith."

Thank goodness he didn't donate to a synagogue.

If he'd REALLY wanted his contribution to go to the most deserving among us, he should have sent it in a care package to the poor, beleageured Palestinians  in Gaza.  Or better yet, hand all of it over to The One, the Most Holy and Sainted Obama, who would touch the tubes of toothpaste with his deified fingers and cause them to sprout fruit and grain. Yea, even the toilet paper and scrub brushes would be as horns of plenty, that we might all sup from the abundance.

My daughter-in-law recently

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 4:21pm.

My daughter-in-law recently got me interested in couponing.

While I'm never going to make a killing like the extreme couponers, that doesn't have to be the goal.  It's still nice to learn how to use the UP rewards from Rite-Aid to one's advantage, and to score some really good deals by doubling up coupons with sales and BOGO's in the markets.

Groupon also has great deals, like buying $50 worth of restaurant coupons for $25 etc.

Some of these "extreme" couponers go way beyond, though, (one guy had 1000 cans of deodorant in his garage!) .  When it gets to be couponing for the sake of couponing, to that extent, IMO it's lapping over into addiction territory, just like hoarding.

Stocking up on non-food makes

Submitted by amyshulk on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 10:26am.

Stocking up on non-food makes sense to me, it's the 100 boxes of cereal, etc. {in the article on this in my local paper} that makes no sense to me unless they donate/barter them.

After I got out of the USN, we were just above the poverty level in Fla. and coupons/loss leaders/etc. are how I kept us fed. I never lost the habit and added sweepstaking to get things I couldn't afford/couldn't justify buying.

In 7 years, I've won some really nice things, and I really enjoy the hobby - check out my profile if you're interested for the link {FREE} my user name is the same there as here, but all of my name, not the abbreviated version ;-P :->

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

My coworker is into the coupon thing big time. She has two little boys under the age of three and she and her husband are trying to save money to build a house.  She saves lots of money on groceries for family and she also buys extra food for her church's food pantry for the local needy, so pfffft to Stuever!

I HATE COMMIE PINKO PUKES

Submitted by rammingspeed on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 8:47pm.

No problem, you Marxist son of a bitch. We'll just elect a - what else? - Marxist president who has Marxist czars hammer away at The Constitution and make regulations that have the force of properly legislated law, all the while lying their freakin' asses off about it, who'll eventually see to it that the everything police march into private homes and rip those g*damned coupons right out of those b*tches' fat, stupid fingers!

That oughta help make up for 235 years of The Bad People in this effing country railroading everything away from The Good People. And even if it's just stupid, meaningless b.s., so the eff what?

Since when is thrift a sin?

Submitted by brerol on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 9:26pm.

Is this Wapo guy serious? My wife and I and our three children get by on middle class income. Paying bills and saving for college and retirement is no easy chore. To stretch the dollar as far as we can you can bet we and especially my wife will use coupons. We usually save between $25 to $50 a week. Over a years time we are talking serious money in savings. And we put serious thought before we buy any big ticket item such as a car or furniture. We do our best to get the best deal possible. A deal that would not be possible if we were not using coupons and other means to strectch the $$. Thrift is not a sin but a virture.
