Chris Matthews Sees Japan Earthquake an 'Opportunity' for Obama to Remind People He Was Born in Hawaii

Hundreds if not thousands of people are dead due to a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But at least it gave Barack Obama an avenue to remind everyone he was born in Hawaii. That's the silver lining for MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

"Was this sort of a good opportunity for the president to remind everybody that he grew up in the United States and Hawaii?"

That's a question that Chris Matthews posed to MSNBC host and White House corresondent Chuck Todd about President Obama taking a question from a Japanese reporter during a news conference earlier today at the White House.

Matthews pegged this question on the fact that there are many persons of Japanese heritage who live in the Hawaiian islands, which were themselves impacted by smaller tsunami resulting from the earthquake.

"That's the first thing I thought of," Matthews insisted. "Such a large number of people believe he grew up in [Kenya], they're buying this thing that's coming from Huckabee," Matthews insisted.

A somewhat visibly flustered Todd politely rejected Matthews's argument:

TODD: Look, do I think they thought this was another chance? No. I mean, they called this press conference because they hadn't had an opportunity to speak about gas prices.... This was a case where events crowded out the whole purpose of the press conference. That's an interesting theory. It certainly did give him an opportunity to remind folks of where he grew up and the folks he grew up with.

MATTHEWS: Yeah, it's pathetic he has to do that, but thank you so much, Chuck Todd.

MATTHEWS: Sorry to bring you into our intramural concerns here, but one of them is this strange critique of him from the right that he's not really one of us that never seems to end. Thank you Chuck Todd for that great reporting on an unusual and very strange topic.

I lost essentially all of my use for Tingles during Bush's re-election campaign in '04, and Obama's '08 campaign killed it off permanently. It's strange what has happened to him...Matthews used to be a fairly reasonable liberal voice, and I actually used to enjoy hearing his views on issues (even though I disagreed with most of them). This was of course back before Bush was first elected president...After that though, Matthews really seemed to go off the deep end like the rest of his liberal media compatriots.

He doesn't like to interview people, and he doesn't like to hear what anyone has to say but himself. What I'm trying to figure out, which does Chris like more - watching others react to his opinions, or simply hearing himself speak. I'd say I'd like to sit down with him for drinks, but I'm afraid he would just speak over me the entire time. Great moderator, that man. OOF

Obama did in fact, during a press conference earlier today, take this disaster and use it to remind everyone just how in tune with the people of Japan he is, simply because he supposedly was born in Hawaii. What one, birth place, has to do with the other, Japan disaster, he didn't actually get around to explaining. I believe Ken's words included "born" in Hawaii, but those were neither the words of Obama nor Matthews. And, as Ken rightly notes, Obama's reference was in response to a question by a Japanese reporter--not part of his prepared introductory condolences. What's the big deal about his mentioning he grew up in Hawaii (which is also home to many of Japanese descent)? The 'more evidence of narcissism' charge is a bit weak in this instance.

and that it had affected Hawaii, and knowing that Obama had a presser scheduled, it did cross my mind that he would find some way to remind us all, yet again, that he grew up in Hawaii as a way to insert himself into the story. The fact that his reminder came as part of an answer to a reporter's question really doesn't matter. To be fair to Obama, and in response to your point, we don't know for certain if Obama had or hadn't planned to bring this up on his own, but, given his track record, I wouldn't put it past him. Obama is an astoundingly egocentric person who loves almost nothing better than to be the center of attention. The fact that he did see fit to take the opportunity to mention his connection to Hawaii during his comments (prepared or not) about this horrendous earthquake, which otherwise had absolutely had nothing whatsoever to do with him, I think was a further example of his well established narcissism...You're certainly welcome to your opinion on this, of course.

Anyone else notice the change in strategy? Instead of arguing if Obama was BORN in Hawaii, the left is now saying "...people believe he grew up in [Kenya]"..."It certainly did give him an opportunity to remind folks of where he grew up and the folks he grew up with." None of the "birthers" are arguing against his presidency because of where he "grew up"...it's where he was born and what nationality his father was. He has yet to display his long form birth certificate and has spent a fortune fighting in court to prevent having to do so.

Obsession

Submitted by Ashrak on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 8:38pm.

Panama Tingles knows , and has said as much, that he cannot produce a simple and commonplace document called a long form birth certificate. He knows that he cannot prove what he so wants to believe. Because of this, it so very much bothers him that he looks for any and all opportunity to try and produce some circumstantial "evidence" supporting what it is wants to believe. The long form birth certificate isn't about Hawaii, it isn't about which hospital, it is about who is actually listed, unmolested and originally, as his biological father. If it is Obama Senior, then the document proves he is not eligible for the office he holds. If it lists another or none at all, again - unamended- then he is busted as a liar and a fraud anyway. Mathews is obsessed with this because he knows the reality and it fills his thoughts every waking minute. Who am I kidding, he probably dreams about it too. As for Todd being taken aback, well, the implosion continues.
That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Absolute nonsense, Ashrak...

Submitted by Jer on Sat, 03/12/2011 - 1:38am.

Obama Senior is already the presumptive father and the certificate previously released ostensibly reflects information which is part of the official birth records in Hawaii. The only definitive method of establishing a different paternity beyond any doubt would be to exhume the body and conduct DNA testing. Furthermore, proving Obama Senior to be the father would not be dispositive of presidential ineligibility by any means--that would require a SCOTUS ruling.

Obama apparently has several half-siblings who were the offspring of Obama Sr. and 3 or 4 different women/wives and would presumably be candidates for DNA matching. That may be the ultimate theoretical solution although I seriously doubt it will occur [in the foreseeable future at least].

Furthermore, it's unlikely the committed birthers will EVER accept mere documentation. I've heard too many of them say that any "records" corroborating Obama's Hawaiian birth would be dismissed as forgeries designed to further the conspiracy of his US citizenship.

So you believe there has been an elaborate, multi-dimensional conspiracy hatched nearly half a century ago, sustained by a breathtaking web of lies, designed to conceal the actual birthplace of Barack Obama, and that numerous family members, wily confederates, and corrupt state personnel have been complicit in the fraud, confident that no one would ever be clever enough, persistent enough, powerful enough, or invested with the sufficient judicial authority to unravel it. Such tales of fantastic artifice and intrigue are fun to talk about, but they generally lack one crucial ingredient necessary to establish reasonable credibility: Common Sense. There is no getting around the barrier or climbing over it. And it is against that wall of stone where the birthers' wild fantasies are smashed to bits.

Your response sounds a lot more like a conspiracy than what I am saying.........I'm a lot more of a simpleton than you are, as you well know. But if you break down all of the adjectives and lush sentances and legalise types of statements, there is a little bit of 'common sense' in what you are saying. And that is - you'd have to SUSPEND 'common sense' to believe that what is being sold to you is true..................and there is still NO PROOF that Boy Barry WAS born here - it's as simple as that, Jer. Take it or leave it - and you don't have to believe it - but you, or anybody else, cannot give any REAL PROOF that this twerp was born here............even Neil Uber-Commie, who was quoted as saying 'I knew Barack's parents then, and I was HERE when he (Barry) was born'.........and then says that his first recollection of seeing little Barry was when he was 'playing T-ball, or something like that'. There doesn't have to be any kind of 'elaborate conspiricay' dating back 50 years.......it only had to date back to the time when Barry was starting to become a 'serious' (oh jeez, give me a friggin break!!!) contender. I'll tell you something, Jer, since I live here, I can tell you that Chi-town politics, or Joisy politics, have NOTHING on Hawaii politics. This place is as corrupt as you can possibly be, and it has been run by the Democrat party for all of my lifetime!!! You think they're NOT going to protect Boy Barry, and all of his secrets???? Like I said - take it or leave it, and you don't have to believe it, but I"ve got as much chance of being right as you do, and probably more...................But I"ll repeat myself from earlier..............I don't give a rat's rearend WHERE Hussein Soetoro was born - I think he might be an alien - it's WHO HE IS and WHAT HE IS DOING that is causing me, and increasingly millions of others, to wonder what the hell happened in 2008!!! But from what I've read--and I've spent a good many hours on the issue, including reviewing numerous articles at the absurdly biased WorldNetDaily home of the birthers website--the notion that he was born anywhere other than Hawaii is nonsense.

And even living here in Hawaii, I'm not aware of any people stepping up and saying that they can remember Barry from his baby days - doctors, nurses, neighbors, whatever................and even ol' Uber-Commie messed it up by saying some of his own recollections, And remember that the press wasn't allowed around his 'typical white grandmother' for the last couple years of her life. Anyway, I'm going surfing........................the tidal surges have been going on non-stop since the Japan earthquake/tsunami..........it's like watching National Geographic in action!!! We've been getting a low tide/high tide situation multiple times a day, although it seems to be abating now. Sorry about the 'run-on' paragraph..................I think the website has some issues in this regard.

Obama and Hawaii

Submitted by NVRAT on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 9:27pm.

Hey Tinkles, have him produce his Hawaiian birth certificate then we will be impressed. Until then he is just another Kenyan washed up on American soil sort of like those Haitians do every once and awhile only Soros saw an opportunity to train one to his image (liberal) and started him on his way knowing that idiots like you and Maddow would beat the drum for him. Now you not only have a wet leg but a yellow spot beneath you.

I do not think he is a Kenyan.

Submitted by NL207 on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 9:59pm.

His relatives there who say he was born there have been unable to produce any supporting documentation. There would certainly have been a crown colony birth certificate.

It is more likely he was born in Seattle since his mother registered as a student and began attending classes at UofW only days after his birth. At least THOSE documents have actually been seen.

To a self-absorbed Beltway troll like Matthews, it's all about political games. Had Matthews been on the air the day after the Japanese attacked our Pacifc Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Matthews would've told us it was a good time for FDR to remind everyone that he'd once been Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

Maybe Boy Blunder should REMIND his old buddy , our latest governor - the wholly-owned-by-unions, ultra-red, hippie, cretin Neil Uber-Commie - that he WAS born here in Hawaii, because ol' Neil CANNOT seem to come up with his birth certificate, which he said he was going to do, just to settle the whole 'birther' issue....................

Born in Hawaii, but no Birth Certificate

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sat, 03/12/2011 - 12:04am.

I finally got it figured out.  You can't have a long form Birth Certificate if it's an immaculate conception.

"You people" should be ashamed of yourselves.  Now his comment about how he was going to raise the level of the seas starts to make more sense.

I know you're being facetious

Submitted by dscott on Sat, 03/12/2011 - 7:44pm.

I know you're being facetious but yes you can have a long form without the father being named, they just put in "unknown". Ironically, that would wipe out all of Obama's issues of eligibility. I think the real issue is that he is ASHAMED of his real birth father just as he is ASHAMED of his grades in college. That's why he refuses to release them to the public unlike every other politician who proudly and loudly hands them out like dollar bills. IF Obama were as smart as Rev. Wright and Paul McCartney claim he is, then it would be rubbed in the face of George W Bush and every conservative. The fact is Obama is dumb as a box of rocks and he has the grades to prove it. Go ahead liberals, PROVE ME WRONG BY RELEASING HIS GRADES THAT HE SEALED.

Birth Father

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 03/13/2011 - 9:00am.

I'm not really sure about the "ashamed" part, but not releasing his original birth certificate because of a different father then his auto-biographies reference is high on my list of reasons why he wouldn't release his birth certificate.

Obama votes 'absent' again

Submitted by Slyrr on Sat, 03/12/2011 - 11:23am.

This president has been disgraceful with his wishy-washy inaction on every major issue that's popped up since he took office. The only thing he can be said to have 'done' is push his disaster Obamacare through and then spend all of our money. He did nothing during the oil platform fire for months, except gnash his teeth and say 'plug the dang hole' (as if simply commanding it would make it happen) while blocking foreign assistance. He did nothing when Iran protestors risked their lives against the mullahs. He did nothing about the many radical terrorist attacks under his watch except to say he was 'concerned'. He did nothing about the Egypt protests except to declare from his throne that the mob was acting because HE inspired them. (I am the one I have been waiting for!') Lybia and other Middle East countries are burning - and what is Obama doing? Throwing lavish parties to tribute Motown! Disgraceful! He has done nothing except to say that he is 'watching closely'. Oh - Obama is 'WATCHING'. I feel safer already! He did nothing during the Wisconsin eruption, even after saying he was going to go down there and start marching the picket lines with his union vassals. (He never showed up and during the last presser, he was asked NO questions about the defeat of his precious union thugs) And he is doing nothing now - even while Japan suffers in the aftermath of this quake. Sending an aircraft carrier to 'observe' things? What's the good of that? When a photo of Bush looking out over Katrina was plastered all over the liberal media, they used it to gleefully shout it as 'proof' that Bush didn't care. They said all he did was fly overhead and wouldn't join those who were suffering from the hurricane aftermath. They said he was cold, indifferent, and the even accused him of racism by saying he was glad that the hurricane had killed so many black people. (it was all rubbish, but they didn't care as long as they weren't challenged on their lies) And what has Obama done during every disaster? All he's ever done is say he's 'observing' things and that he's 'concerned'. 'If a brother or sister be destitute and naked, and one of you say to him 'Depart in peace - be ye warmed and filled!', notwithstanding ye gave him not those things which are needful for the body, what profit is your faith unto such? Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead - being alone.' What good does it do the country to have a president and first lady who do nothing but party and stuff their faces while the world is in tumult around them? Bush at least went down to Katrina during the disaster. Obama waits for 2-4 months after the disaster has happened, then maybe turns up to play with tar balls on the beach and get his photo taken if you're lucky.
If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.
