WaPo Editorial: 'Violent Metaphors' Don't Kill People, 'Guns Kill People'

While many liberal media outlets are obsessing over conservative political rhetoric they insist leads to incidents like the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona), the Washington Post today has opted instead to exploit the tragic shooting to push for gun control.

"The early evidence raises questions about mental illness and indiscriminate access to guns," the Post complained in the subheadline to its top January 10 editorial, "Carnage in Arizona.":

The temptation will be, as Arizona and the nation mourn the dead and hope for the recovery of the wounded, to infuse the terrible attack with broader political meaning - to blame the actions of the alleged 22-year-old gunman, Jared Lee Loughner, on a vitriolic political culture laced with violent metaphors and ugly attacks on opponents. Maybe. But metaphors don't kill people - guns kill people.

Of course the Post editorial board went on to see a broader political meaning in the tragedy, namely, the "need" for more gun control:

Saturday's rampage does illustrate the need for tighter control of semiautomatic weapons and ammunition. The gunman arrived at the supermarket with a Glock semiautomatic equipped with an extended magazine of about 30 bullets and additional ammunition. The long-lapsed federal ban on assault weapons, which prohibited such high-capacity magazines, should be reinstated: There is no justification, outside of law enforcement or military use, for such ammunition. A magazine with a smaller capacity might not have stopped the gunman, but it might have at least reduced the carnage.

No, people kill people

Submitted by Dave. on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 5:29pm.

And they have been doing it for thousands of years before firearms were invented.

And if the Washed up Post had its way, we would be left to defend our homes and families from well armed criminals with nothing but sling shots.

That is, until the cry-baby criminal-coddlers at the WaPo manages to get those banned, too.

Wapo Editorial

Submitted by RightRealDeal on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 5:27pm.

Guns don't kill anyone or haven't you heard yet (Wapo ?)       There shoudl be less gun control in this country, yes less.   Freedom of speech, individual liberty and the right to bear arms are always under attack.

Every individual has the right to have guns and if more did, perhaps there would be less whack jobs able to do what happened on Saturday.

Stop with the gun control leftist stuff and stop trying to tie the incident to Conservatives.

Or haven't you heard this was an individual out there on his own?

I spent 11 years in the US

Submitted by bassndude on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 5:39pm.

I spent 11 years in the US Army, and toured Vietnam, Europe and South America. That said...I never, ever saw a weapon, (gun), to just decide to jump up and shoot someone! And I have spent alot of time around them.

I went to a musuem one time

Submitted by Hunter12 on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 5:41pm.

I went to a musuem one time and there was a gun in a display case and the whole time I was in the musuem, it didn't kill a single person.  Later on that day, I was watching the news and a jealous boyfriend drove into a crowd and killed two people with his car.  Cars Kill!!!!  We should ban them.

This guy wanted to kill people.  He would have found another way if the FBI background check had prevented him from buying a gun.  If someone in the crowd had been packing and ready for it, Loughner may have never got a round off.  It is a tragedy that people died to give some loser his moment of infamy.  The vitrol from the left almost seems to be trying to get another reaction, but this time against a conservative.

Submitted by bassndude on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 5:44pm.

Thats another thing that gets me. Arizona, where they have open carry. If you own a gun, you can carry it. And this nut is the only one at the Safeway that had one???????? Why is that?

awww, come on now...

Submitted by wizardjr on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 6:15pm.

Unless you live in a freefire zone in Chicago or D.C., most folks don't carry because they don't feel in danger.

As tragic as this is, it is less likely than buying a winning lottery ticket. If you drive a car, you should be afraid. If you live in the ghetto you should be afraid. If Barry gets reelected in 2012 you should be afraid.

If you're going to Safeway... meh, not so much.

I heard one report

Submitted by HockeyKid on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 6:48pm.

that said there was  guy carrying under his concealed carry permit, but he said, "I didn't think to draw it."  Now there's somebody who shouldn't be carrying--obviously hasn't taken the time to train in appropriate response scenarios.

hey, guns can in fact kill people, or try to. LOL

Submitted by BackWaterTech on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 9:29pm.

occasionally, as a close friend of mine found out, firearms can "go off" all on thier own. . .

namely black powder rifles and pistols. BP can go off on its own and without respect of this fact can in fact get you hurt. . .

and the possibility that one does not fire when it needs to and some one else shoots you.

But there is not one firearm out there that will actively kill anything without being comanded to do so. like any good well designed TOOL would do.

When Guns are Outlawed...

Submitted by bigdaddy on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 10:08pm.

...only outlaws will have guns, or crazy, mentally disturbed, dirtbags who buy guns from outlaws, or members of South American or Mexican drug gangs in our country illegally.

The rest of us will have to rely on our Jedi Mind Tricks or Eric Holder to protect us.

Guns kill people???

Submitted by LoosMoose on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 12:45am.

If guns kill people then I guess pencils mispell words.  Judging from the mispelled words and poor grammar at the Washington Post, they must have bought every pencil China has produced for years.

I had a nightmare that Keith Olberman was run over by a bus,.......  and lived.

Test Completed

Submitted by jpk3 on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 1:59am.

Took my daughters Ruger LCP, locked and loaded it then conducted the following tests, 1st we put it on the kitchen table and gave it permission to shoot who ever it wanted, after 20 minutes nothing. I thought maybe Ruger didn’t feel comfortable shooting someone in the kitchen. We put it in the den, living room, family room and even took it for a drive and still nothing. Near as I can tell either my daughters gun won’t kill or because maybe it’s only Glocks, not Rugers, that kill people. Has anyone else had this problem or do I need to take the Ruger in for counseling

Your Ruger obviously has some

Submitted by Hoosierboy on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:09am.

Your Ruger obviously has some confidence issues.  It probably feels guilty after its cousin went on a shooting spree in Tuscon.

Submitted by Hoosierboy on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:07am.

I challenge anyone, anywhere, to write a sample law that would have prevented this shooting.

That law already has been written ....

Submitted by NL207 on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:53am.

Loughner was known to the Pima County Sheriff's office as a person who was making telephone death threats to people in its jurisdiction.   Enforce the law against that, deprive Mr. Loughner of the freedom of action he used to perpetrate this crime.

Alternative Solution

Submitted by IrateNate on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 2:17pm.

"...a magazine with smaller capacity might not have stopped the gunman, but it might have at least reduced the carnage."

How many rounds would be acceptable?  A 14-shot clip?  How about a revolver?  Would this ass-clown at the WaPo actually feel better if just 6 people had been shot?

Consider that, if everyone who attended the rally carried a firearm, someone would have taken this nut out before he could get off his 30 rounds.  More firepower, reduced carnage, one less sick bastard to deal with.
