Earlier today I had the pleasure of attending the weekly blogger's briefing hosted by the Heritage Foundation. Conservative activist and public relations consultant Craig Shirley was the featured guest, and he spoke about his new book "Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign That Changed America."

Shirley noted the remarkable parallels between the Republican Party that Reagan and the conservative movement revitalized in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the situation facing conservatives today.

Then as now liberal Democrats claimed the presidency and liberal ideology seemed ascendant following the tenure of Republican presidents who expanded the size and scope of government (Nixon) and/or were inept (Ford). Now as in the late 1970s, it is conservatives standing outside the establishment who can be the revitalizing and reforming force for the GOP and more importantly the country.

During a roughly 30-minute Q&A session, Shirley answered a series of questions from bloggers in attendance, and shared among other things the following observations:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
  • The legendary friendship between Reagan and then-Speaker Tip O'Neill is just that, a myth. The Massachusetts Democrat was as fiercely partisan as Speaker Pelosi is today. Indeed, O'Neill even remarked in his memoirs that he considered Reagan's election as president a "sin."
  • Despite its biases, the mainstream media coverage of Reagan in the 1980 campaign did produce some solid, fair and balanced journalism, something Shirley argues is missing today from the mainstream media at-large. On the other hand, Shirley noted, the media universe is larger and more diverse today, offering readers more alternatives to the biased mainstream media.
  • The 1970s saw Reagan's evolution into a more optimistic conservative even as it was the decade where big government policy scheme failures made clear to Americans big government was the problem, not the answer.
  • Jimmy Carter's politicization of the Iranian hostage crisis in his 1979 primary battle with Sen. Ted Kennedy was so crass that even liberal media outlets like the Washington Post called him out on it.

Nice, Ken.

There's still hope, um, a reason to be optomistic!

(and before the trolls start...occasionally NB does something different just for fun, so can it, trollsters).

I hope he fails, too.

Speaking of presidents who

Speaking of presidents who fixed the economy, here is a hilarious "article" on why Obama should not be blamed for unemployment:

Try not to laugh.

I have no doubt that

I have no doubt that conservativism will come back into power, and stronger than ever.  But who will be the new Reagan?  I don't know of anyone out there who speaks as Reagan did in the '70s, with that level of conviction and understanding.

The Press

There are other "Reagans" out there. But the press has become emboldened to the point where they lie, sans conscience. Far from being protectors of truth and defenders of the people, they have become outright conspirators in the attempt to ruin the moral and physical well being of the nation. They attack in order to personally destroy anyone with whom they disagree. And they've taken a big leap in their viciousness and dishonesty since the 1980s. They are the enemy of the people and will be the mortal enemy of another Raegan. Not that we can't succeed, but the fight to take back the country from those who wish it harm is harder than ever before.

isia... I agree...Pence

I agree...Pence reminds me of one of those conservatives your are speaking of when it comes to reminding me of Reagan.

Just a thought.

Palin could be it.  As long

Palin could be it.  As long as she's been spending the last couple of months getting more acquaitned with US foreign policy, she has my vote.  I don't think Obama has a clue, but I want the next President to know what's going on in the world.

I want a leader

I want someone who can speak with understanding and passion about America--its roots and its future. I want someone who is a federalist and a person who strictly adheres to the Constitution of the United States. I want someone who can be contrasted with the immature, under-educated, intellectual pygmies who now run the nation and the media. I want someone who will outsmart (not difficult) the idiots in the Congress through his/her sheer will to do the right thing. I want someone who can articulate exactly why a bill such as health care is unAmerican. I want someone who will surround him/herself with patriots, not political hacks. --And more. I don't want a person who thinks he/she can tell me how to live my life, what words I can use, whom I should like or dislike, someone who will make me an economic slave and take away my freedoms under the guise of helping my "brothers" or "sisters". I don't want a John McCain who will abndon his principles in order to get along with his "friends" in Washington.---And much more.

Is this person out there? Does he/she have a chance? Is this a pipedream? Those are the questions.

isia... For me that

For me that person would be Liz Cheney...and I'm serious.

She's top notch.

Don't know if you've caught her much in the last year or so...but I am really glad I have, I know I'm just dreaming...but heck, it's my dream and I'm gonna stick to it until I see something better come along.

I just feel we will...no matter when, we'll know.

Sounds good to me.

BTW, I saw Reid at the mike the other day. Beside him was Al Franken. I saw a Congressman on Cavuto today ( seemed like a nice guy--but a complete idiot). Then I thought about Nancy " the blinker" Pelosie.

How did we come to this? It's so so sad.

Well, the dumbing down of

Well, the dumbing down of America has been in the works for years isia...and we are seeing the proof in the pudding now.

It's not only sad, it plain terrifying to me.

I'm hoping with all my heart that this country is awakening from their long sleep...and will show so at the polls in '10.

Otherwise...well, we shall see, but it ain't gonna be good.

" the dumbing down of America"--you've nailed it. As America has slept, it's been coming for decades. Is it too late? But real "hope" springs eternal.
