After plugging his latest column in a September 10 post on the magazine's Swampland blog, Time's Joe Klein (shown in file photo at right) pegged Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) as "vile" before defending taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants:
On this whole question of whether illegal immigrants will be included in the plan, which caused the vile Congressman from South Carolina to shout "You lie" when the President said they wouldn't be covered. Why shouldn't they be? After all, when an illegal immigrant cuts his hand while chopping cabbage and goes to the emergency room, the rest of us pay for it. Isn't the point to expand the risk pool as much as possible, to lure the insurance companies into concessions and lower prices?
I know it 's not going to happen. Congress will never vote to subsidize the health care of those who arrived here illegally. But, given the fact that we're already subsidizing them through the back door, it does make sense, doesn't it?
Actually, Joe, most average Americans would say it makes sense to more vigorously enforce our immigration laws and to more strictly limit the social safety net to American citizens and foreign nationals who are legally in the United States.
What's more, Klein's emergency room illustration is also misleading. No one is arguing for denying emergency medical care to anyone who comes through the doors of an ER. The bigger issue would be a "public option" that doesn't require users to prove their citizenship or legal permanent resident status before receiving taxpayer-funded benefits.

it amazes me
September 10, 2009 - 10:47 ET by jon_torlinIt simply amazes me that people think that illegals should be given preferential treatment or something like that, when in other countries, Mexico for example, have real strict laws about people entering their country.
It should be a two way street, but it's not.
Not to mention, which part of ILLEGAL do they not understand?

They can buy insurance
September 10, 2009 - 10:55 ET by sevenBuying insurance is an option. When I was a kid, my dad would stop at the border and buy a short term auto policy to cover the car in Mexico. We got rear ended by a truck without brakes in a gas station of all places. we were outside the car and filed a claim. If you want insurance, buy it. it may come in handy. The concept of paying for something is not new.
Buy insurance here or buy
September 10, 2009 - 13:26 ET by kgBuy insurance here or buy insurance back home in Mexico where Obama will sign an agreement that insurance companies will cover them while in the U.S.
Now there is a novel idea. Problem solved. Illegal aliens covered at their own expense.

Not all illegals are here 'doing the work that Americans won't do'. What about the grandmas, and the babies and juveniles, or the ones who are here robbing and raping, or the ones who are smuggling people, drugs and guns. Are they deserving of our charity also?

September 10, 2009 - 14:21 ET by Joe BlogsIs Joe Klein retarded? Or does he just hate free America? The fact is, Obamabots think white America is unjustifiably wealthy, which is why they engineered our whole economic crisis based on the Community Reinvestment Act. Since 9/11 we have had a bubble economy based on spending by insolvent minorities and immigrants, legal and illegal, who bought houses they couldn't afford and took out home equity loans they had no intention of repaying if the value of the houses ever dropped below the amount of their mortgages. Along the way, tax revenue from the bubble economy was used to grow government to absurd and cancerous levels -- state govts like California's used the bubble money to promise pensions, salaries, and benefits to public workers that were unsustainable even in the best of times with real economic growth.
But as we all know, growth of government spending is a rachet and pawl mechanism; you might slow its rate of progression, but you can never reverse it. Kinda like immigration. It has nothing but negative consequences for citizens, but just you try to stop it, or even slow it. That would make you a vicious hater that deserves no rights at all in our society. You have to make way for the great wave of unwashed third world breeders who will drive your country bankrupt with all their neeeeeeeeeeeds! They neeeeed your space. They neeeeed your money! And by the way, they will compete for your job, no matter how ordinary or lucrative it might be.Move over! America must someday become just like the smelly, impovershed Indian subcontinent because citizens have no right to say that we are a sovereign country and that low value human capital doesn't have a right to immigrate here.

"Isn't the point to expand the risk pool as much as possible..."
September 10, 2009 - 11:07 ET by WhoIsJohnGaltWell, Joe, actually...that ol''expanding the risk pool' thing only works as method of cost reduction only when those in the risk pool pay a share of the shared risk.
Nitwit.
And this cannot go unstated:
“Proponents of universal health care often use the 46-million figure -- without context or qualification. It creates the false impression that a huge percentage of the population has fallen through the cracks,” Gratzer told BMI. “Again, that’s not to suggest that there is no problem, but it's very different than the universal-care crowd describes.” Dr. Grace-Marie Turner, a BMI adviser and president of the Galen Institute, agreed that “the number [on uninsured] is inflated and affects the debate.” Turner also pointed out that “45 percent of the uninsured are going to have insurance within four months [according to the Congressional Budget Office],” because many are transitioning between jobs and most people get health insurance through their employers. So what is the true extent of the uninsured “crisis?” The Kaiser Family Foundation, a liberal non-profit frequently quoted by the media, puts the number of uninsured Americans who do not qualify for current government programs and make less than $50,000 a year between 13.9 million and 8.2 million. That is a much smaller figure than the media report.
Kaiser’s 8.2 million figure for the chronically uninsured only includes those uninsured for two years or more. It is also worth noting, that, 45 percent of uninsured people will be uninsured for less than four months according to the Congressional Budget Office. "

Risk pools: Funny how libs
September 10, 2009 - 11:22 ET by mattmRisk pools: Funny how libs don't get the concept that you have to spread the cost or you're not spreading the risk. Secondly, the risk factor is only a legitimate concern in a true insurance situation. Healthcare "insurance" -other than catastrophic coverage- is not insurance, it's pre-paid medical services. And whenever you have a pre-paid system, the price automatically goes up and the quality automatically goes down.
46 million uninsured: Of course they inflate the number, but since they've mischaracterized the problem in the first place, it doesn't matter what number they use. The problem is not about insurance, it's about the method of paying for healthcare, and the best way to do that is by the patient paying the doctor. Everything else, like catastrophic policies and HSAs, are all optional and can be negotiated among private parties. And the government could still provide temporary relief for the indigent.
But this issue is not about healthcare or insurance. It's about the consolidation of power by the tyrannical leftist elite.

illegal is a-ok
September 10, 2009 - 12:31 ET by rowdygirlI would love to hear him explain this so it actually makes sense. Being illegal in this country is ok with him since they're here anyway? Maybe that's what he means. If so, we should change the name... in my mind, illegal = wrong. If you tell a child that something is illegal, aren't you teaching them that rules\laws apply and they shouldn't be doing that?
I'll would never make it in government.. I just can't think like that.

ER- Illegals Doctors Office
September 10, 2009 - 13:14 ET by ScottyDog"No one is arguing for denying emergency medical care to anyone who comes through the doors of an ER"
I am.
The reason they use the ER for their personal doctors office where they do not pay a dime is precisely because of the unconstitutional mandate that ER's treat anyone who walks in the door.
California has closed over 80 ER's because of this ridiculous mandate by the Federal Government.
Re Illegals
September 10, 2009 - 13:12 ET by slickwillie2001Covering illegals is a huge loser for the democratics:
Here's Why the Dems Will Cave on Verification of Illegals: http://corner.nationalreview.com
"The desire to limit the benefits to U.S. citizens is found across demographic and partisan lines. It is held by 95% of Republicans, 70% of Democrats and 87% of those not affiliated with either major party. It is favored by nine-out-of-10 conservatives and moderates, along with 56% of those who consider themselves politically liberal. But 32% of liberals hold the opposite view."
By the way, there's another angle on this for illegals to get coverage. Obamacare at present dictates that if one member of a family is eligible for Obamacare, then all members of the family are thereby eligible. This means that the 'anchor babies' ensure that entire families, even some members still in Mexico, will get Obamacare.
The illegal angle is a big winner for Republicans and we need to pound on it.
Because illegals are
September 10, 2009 - 16:10 ET by mostlymoderateBecause illegals are "illegal". They mock a system of order and justice. They slap the faces of everyone that had to wait 10 years to become citizens. They don't have to pay taxes and usually send a great deal of their income back to their country of origin. They drain the limited resources of the United States public welfare system and also put a strain of law enforcement, hospitals, welfare offices and other public benefits. Schools are over-flooded. They screw the whole system up. That's why.
