Time's Klein Recalls Meeting a Drunk Ted Kennedy While High on Pot

Reflecting on "How Ted Kennedy Found Himself," Time's Joe Klein today let readers in on an encounter with the Massachusetts senator in the 1970s when he was stoned and Kennedy drunk.

The occasion, Klein receiving an "honorable mention" journalism award from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial foundation in 1974.

Klein explained how their conversation at the reception centered around an earlier incident in which Sen. Kennedy had been pelted with tomatoes by angry constituents:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

I spent a fair amount of time with him in the 1970s, and most of the circumstances involved pain or awkwardness.... I was beginning to feel sorry for the guy.

And no more so than the day we walked through Boston's City Hall Plaza together and got pelted with tomatoes thrown by some of his most loyal and mythic constituents — the aggrieved Celts of South Boston, whose children were about to be bused into a black neighborhood. Afterward, in his office, he offered me a towel to wipe the tomato off my ruined khaki suit and disappeared. But we talked again about that day soon after, and memorably so, since neither of us was sober. It was at a cocktail reception at Ethel Kennedy's home, for recipients of the Robert F. Kennedy journalism awards, one of whom happened to be me. In celebration, before the ceremony, a Kennedy who shall remain nameless took me down to the barn for an intense herbal experience. When I returned to the house, there was Teddy — and it was immediately apparent that he was as shiffazed as I was stoned. We greeted each other like old comrades in arms, sat in a corner and talked about how he wasn't angry about the tomatoes, about how sad and unfair it was that the Irish of Southie and the blacks of Roxbury had to endure busing while the rich kids out in the suburbs got off the hook. It was the first actual conversation we'd ever had. A picture was taken of him handing me the award, which has somehow, sadly, been lost. We were both smiling.

Klein then went on to describe how, a few months later, he lied to Kennedy about rampant drug use at Ethel Kennedy's home:

A few months later, I was back at Ethel Kennedy's house — living there as the deputy to Richard Goodwin, the J.F.K. speechwriter who had been tapped as the Rolling Stone Washington bureau chief. On July 4 weekend, Hunter Thompson showed up, and I don't remember much else after that, except that a fair number of Ethel's children were involved. Word spread quickly, as word will do in Washington. That Monday, by coincidence, I had an appointment with Kennedy to talk about a story I was working on, and he said, "Joe, before we get started, can I ask you something off the record?" I said sure, and he continued. "What on earth is happening at that house?"

"Why nothing, Senator," I said, summoning all the false gravity in my tiny arsenal. He smiled, raised an eyebrow. "O.K., O.K.," he said. "I asked."

Two years ago in a New York Times book review, Klein noted that his drug-laden Independence Day of '74 included a hare-brained scheme to protest President Richard Nixon with a truck load of vermin:

On July 2, 1974, I started work as deputy Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone magazine. My unlikely boss was Richard Goodwin, the former Kennedy speechwriter, who invited me to join him in temporary residence at Ethel Kennedy’s home in McLean, Va. (the owner was in Hyannis for the summer). On July 3, Hunter Thompson joined us. Much of what ensued that holiday weekend is lost in the mists of history and a fog of controlled substances. There were extensive conversations about the viability of renting a truck, filling it with rats and dumping them on the White House lawn. There was also an effort to remove all the Andy Williams songs from the Kennedy jukebox and replace them with Otis Redding. But mostly I remember having a marathon conversation with Hunter about books and writers, settling finally on Joseph Conrad’s exhortation in “Lord Jim”: “In the destructive element immerse!”

WOW

Thanks for the memories Joe and Teddy...or what people told you about what happened since you 2 were so drunk and high you could barely stand...The "Lion" of the Senate eh???

Sounds like the Liberal elites are more addicts and users than the "urban" people they're trying to save.

Barack Obama= Half Honkey...ALL Donkey

We greeted each other like

We greeted each other like old comrades in arms, sat in a corner and talked about how he wasn't angry about the tomatoes, about how sad and unfair it was that the Irish of Southie and the blacks of Roxbury had to endure busing while the rich kids out in the suburbs got off the hook.

Talk about liberal thinking!  Forced school busing was a terrible idea that punished little kids based on their skin color.  But here. kennedy shows the lack of empathy that liberals have in that he's not feeling sorry that kids and their parents are being separated from their local schools.  Rather, kennedy is bemoaning the fact he cannot reach out and cause more discomfort by busing those 'rich' suburban kids.

Liberals love to inflict pain in the name of compassion.

The Lion of the Senate is

one of a long line of Kennedy men who spent their lives cheating on their wives, doing drugs, heavy drinking, and the list goes on and on.

No wonder the Kennedy women went out and did good works.

The Lion is gone and we will hear about it all this week and beyond.

Sad for his family he is out of their lives.

Not sorry he is out of mine!

Drinking Buddies

Somewhere in the past, the talk was that Chris Dodd and Teddy were once great drinking buddies - young, inebriated and roaming wild in D.C.

The drunk leading the stoned leading the stupid

Well, this story accounts for the journalistic genius that is Joe Klein...unlike the late Senator, he has still never sobered up.

Yes, it is disgusting to hear the liberals shed crocodile tears over forced busing, which they inflicted on the population. It destroyed the Irish and Italian neighborhoods of Boston and only created more hostility than before. And I am sure those black children just loved being on busses for an hour twice a day.

Bums

Most of our "jounalists" today are cut from the same cloth. Most of our "representatives" today are cut from the same cloth. Sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Drunk and high?? What a memorial tribute, huh?

It kinda makes you wonder what was going through Klein's mind that would make him go public with "memories" like this one of Kennedy. And rampant drug use at Ethel Kennedy's house? Isn't that sweet? No wonder so many of her kids have been so screwed up...Nice family, aren't they?

"The problem is not that people are taxed too little...the problem is that government spends too much." ~President Ronald Reagan

and what is worse, PrairieSky is that some of those same

children are probably on the short list for the governor to appoint to the vacant seat!  Good old Massachusetts politics...whatever a Kennedy asks for, the legislature provides!

How ironic it is that the law HE HIMSELF PUSHED FOR five years ago when they were sure Kerry would win and Romney might have the power to appoint his successor is now right there ready to bite them in the tush!  Of course, the Democrat-controlled legislature and Obama's best bud as governor, will acquiesce and who knows who 'the powers that be' have decided will be the lucky recipient of an unearned senate seat!  My money is on the president's best bud appointing himself!

This account by Joe Klein is DISGUSTING!  As if I needed any more reason to hold journalists and politicians in low esteem, he just provided confirmation of the lowlifes they really are!  NO AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN BUY CLASS - and Ted Kennedy may have never had to work for a dollar, but all that trust fund money did not help him develop one drop of good character!

How nice of the two of them to sit and denigrate the very people who voted for him time and again.  I can state with pride he NEVER once received my vote - if no one was running against him, I left it blank!!!

Never Taking Responsibilty

Klein seems to be as stupid and oblivious as his writing reflects.  He basically said Kennedy knew about illegal drugs and activities going on at his own home and did nothing about it.  Thats a true Lion.

Whaddya expect from the son

Whaddya expect from the son of a guy who made his fortune bootlegging?  Nothing's illegal for a Kennedy.

And by the looks of his waistline, Uncle Teddy ate all the Doritos and Ding-Dongs at the party too…

Remember, Obama's brother still lives in a hut.

Meeting A Drunk

What is the value of this?

Kennedy was the DNC health martyr, much more so than they realize. He fought a war with a deadly disease, seeking life, not a death panel. He's not the alcoholic or ObamaCare idol the leftist deem him to be. His extra year was a lifetime.

"yes, it's just harmless fun"

Joe Klein

With Klein revealing this anecdote, which should have been kept private, it looks as though he is desperate to be viewed as "cool" and as part of the trendy and deliberately disrespectful "in-crowd".

Nope.  He was just one high idiot, having what he thought was a conversation, with another idiot who was drunk.

That's not cool, smart, or "in".

Did Klein get high before he received his award or during the awards presentations at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation?

Revealing this, Klein had to be high, drunk, or both, and I'm sure the Kennedy Family has him now on the very bottom of their "S" List.

Klein is a desperate little man.  A very desperate little man.
