Republicans, particularly those who are the biggest fans of Gov. Sarah Palin, are stuck in the vestiges of the 1984 "white-bread fantasy" of Reagan's "Morning in America," huffs Time magazine's Joe Klein in a July 6 Swampland blog post on "Sarah Palin's America":
All this talk about Sarah Palin's constituency being "real Americans" raises the question, yet again, of who the unreal Americans are. Last September, when the Governor burst upon the scene like a head-on collision, I wrote that Palin's America--white folks, small towns, traditional values--was a Republican fantasy, a vestige of Ronald Reagan's "Morning in America" hornswoggle in the 1980s. (This fantasy was reinforced by John McCain's fetishizing of Joe the Unlicensed Plumber.)
Real America is much different from, and more interesting than, that white-bread fantasy, a problem the Republican Party--the party of immigrant bashing--will be wrestling with for the immediate future.
Klein conveniently omitted that 2008 presidential nominee Sen. John McCain was hardly an immigrant basher, heavily criticized by conservatives in the GOP for his push for amnesty for illegal immigrants. What's more, it was President Reagan who signed the last amnesty bill in 1986, another inconvenient fact that cuts against Klein suggesting Reagan was a quasi-racist xenophobe.
As if to bolster his own cosmopolitan credentials with which to better slam Gov. Palin as provincial, Klein casually dropped a reference to a party he recently attended in the Islamic Republic of Iran:
Story Continues Below Ad ↓[I]t brings to mind a conversation I overheard, and can't get out of my mind, between two educated Iranians at a North Tehran party last month. Both had attended university in the U.S. One had recently returned from the States, the other hadn't been back here in 15 years. "You wouldn't recognize the place," the recent returnee said. "They don't have any Americans left."
He was joking, of course. But the fact is, America--Barack Obama's America--is a different, more exhilarating, sophisticated and diverse place from the Reagan fantasy. Sarah Palin's political future will be crippled by her inability to speak to that America, as will the Republican Party's, so long as it scorns diversity and "cosmopolitan" sensibilities--as Rudy Guiliani, of all people, did at the GOP Convention last summer. The attempts to plaster over this glaring deficiency by putting people like Michael Steele and Bobby Jindal front and center are, to coin a phrase, like putting lipstick on a pig.
So let's get this straight. After assailing the GOP as a party that "scorns diversity" Klein had the chutzpah to, well, scorn as tokens the African-American chairman of the national GOP and the Indian-American governor of the state of Louisiana.
Doesn't that sound like an altogether condescending and racist allegation coming from someone praising President Obama's America of 2009 as "exhilirating, sophisticated, and diverse"?

What America-Hating bigots like Klein ignore is that Reagan was talking about human freedom, not about some socio-economic idealism.
But these self-righteous, arrogant egomaniacs on the left can't bring themselves to acknowlegde the intellect of those they oppose - hence the ridicule and insults that constantly spew forth out of their vile and corrupted mouths.
Liberals hate freedom, and thus, they hated Reagan.

One of the things I really
July 7, 2009 - 13:23 ET by balboaOne of the things I really can't stand is this notion of "real Americans."
Baloney. We're all Americans.
That's where the left
July 7, 2009 - 13:47 ET by HockeyKidThat's where the left misses the point, every time. Just because you're born an American citizen doesn't mean you agree with the American way of life, as defined in our Constitution, Declaration, etc. This is the difference.
Naturalized citizens must take an oath to gain their citizenship. Natural citizens do not take that oath, and many on the left seem to think that birthright means that America is about whatever they want it to be about, be it socialism, authoritarianism, humanism, whatever. That's just a nonsensical point of view.
We can learn from the oath of citizenship:
"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and
abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate,
state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject
or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of
the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will
bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that
I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United
States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national
importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that
I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose
of evasion; so help me God."
So, what's a "real American"? One that upholds these principles. Anyone who wants to reshape America into anything else--be it totalitarian, purely democratic, or anything in between that does not comport with our foundational heritage--is not a real American. And there are plenty of them, with more being "shaped" in our schools every day, more's the shame.

July 7, 2009 - 14:09 ET by balboaThat's where you miss the point. An American who lives here is free to be whatever they want to be, as long as it's legal. They're free to live their life how they want to. If they want to never sing the national anthem, they can do it. If they want to belt it out every time, they can do it. What they shouldn't do is tell another person they're not a "true American" because they don't fit neatly into your definition.
The point of identifying
July 7, 2009 - 14:37 ET by robert108The point of identifying those who actually support American values as "real Americans" is to distinguish us from those who are merely parasites on the bounty of America, while squealing criticism. Missed the point at the end
July 7, 2009 - 14:33 ET by WisdomWhile I don't agree with everything Klein is saying here, I think you entirely missed the point at the end, Ken. You say:
"After assailing the GOP as a party that "scorns diversity" Klein had the chutzpah to, well, scorn as tokens the African-American chairman of
the national GOP and the Indian-American governor of the state of Louisiana."
Then you make the outrageous claim that this sounds like a "condescending and racist allegation."
The point Klein is making is that the Republican party tries extra hard to promote diversity by just throwing Michael Steele and Bobby Jindal to the front ("attempting to plaster over this glaring deficiency") He is basically saying that in the long run, this is not going to work. Numbers have to back it up (female, minority). Diversity has to come natural otherwise people see through the "tokens." This is especially true for young people today, who have a lot more experience with diversity and other cultures than the older generations. And it's not just about race. The attempt in '08 at a token female for VP in Sarah Palin didn't work either because in the end, people saw through it, sorry to say.

Steele and Jindal were not "thrown" to the front. They were both elected to their positions. An example of someone being thrown to the front would be Obama's nomination of the racist Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. There are clearly hundreds of more qualified individuals in the U.S., but Obama was determined to nominate a Latina.
This is the way Democrats appoint people. Remember Bill Clinton's picks for attorney general? Janet Reno, a spinster, was finally picked after Clinton's first two picks, women with nanny problems, fell through. Does anyone seriously believe that the top three individuals for attoeney general were all women?

Wisdom, you say
July 7, 2009 - 21:52 ET by motherbeltWisdom, you say that
Diversity has to come natural otherwise people see through the "tokens."
Are you saying that Republicans force a few blacks into their party so they can claim "diversity"? Or that they limit their numbers because they only want a few as "tokens"?
There is no rule against blacks joining the Republican party. If blacks don't join it, it's their own choice.
If they prefer to side with the Democrats, who treat them like chattel, and children who can't fend for themselves without Big Daddy Government to hold their hands and give them a leg up, they are comfortable in their chains. And they're not even smart. For 40 years the Democrats have been promising to "fix" things for black people, and they still haven't done it.
But they keep believing that the Democrats are going to do "it" for them; and continue to believe that republicans hate black people, and the only reason they promote black people to important positions is to hide the fact that they hate black people.Yet blacks swallow the bait every time.
Look at Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice. Two black Secretaries of State named by a Republican President. Colin Powell is a complete ingrate and Democrats love him.(Just ONCE, I wish some "journalist" would ask him WHY he is a Republcian!)
But they ridiculed Condi Rice as an Aunt Jemima, a stupid black slave and a thick lipped parrot, mindlessly babbling what Bush told her to say. And that was when they weren't implying something perverted between her and President Bush. To Democrats, especially liberals, black is not a skin color; it's a political belief system. Anyone who doesn't believe, isn't really black.
So don't go blaming Republicans for the lack of black faces. The door has always been open. You can open the door and put out the welcome mat; you can't make people come in if they don't want to join the group.
So what do you think Republicans should do to "attract" more blacks?

July 8, 2009 - 06:02 ET by Dan The Man 2I remember integration was just being implemented in Houston when I reached Jr High. I went to Black Junior High in 1968 and there were quite a few bussed in blacks. In my experience they travelled in packs or at least some of them and they wanted to start trouble. They carried rakes, combs made of 4 or more 3" spikes and sometimes sharpened, and threatened me with them many times.
I also remember at least 3 mob fights, black against white, where as many as 200 people were involved. Yes that year and the next was very hard for me. I was very shy and introverted then and scared out of my ever loving mind.
Fights in my school were bad at best anyways if at school. Knives or razors were used sometimes and if two got into it then a circle of people was formed and they would take potshots at one of the fighters. I hated it, I hated school period.

What? Joe,. you didn't get the memo?
July 7, 2009 - 20:26 ET by ParagrouperThere will be none of this bashin' on the bitter, clinging, white trash middle-American crackers. Haven't you been paying attention to Bo and Totus? You've got to spread the love, Joe. Remember, Obama is the great world unifier. He's more than a man--he's the UniBama.

I got to see about 35 seconds at lunch today--that was how long it took my buddy to convince the restaurant manager to change the channel. Funerals and lunch, they just don't mix.

OMG Sharpton when it comes to all of this is all but embarrassing...well, it should be, but while he is whoring himself via the air-waves, so are the air-waves broadcasting his blatant prostitution for another cause....I can just hear the next bill brought up on the floor...'The M.J. Civil Rights Bill' and blah blah blah in it.
It will pass...no problem...probably hidden in the Nationalized Health Care Plan for one and all.

July 7, 2009 - 21:03 ET by Radical1979bt Sharpton actually said something to the kids that was unreal. It was something like "Your daddy wasn't strange, what we did to him was strange". My son and I were rolling. At MJ's memorial Sharpton tells the kids their dad wasn't strange??! What a way to point out the guy WAS strange!

July 7, 2009 - 21:18 ET by Radical1979bt, despite living in a democratic state (ugh) I seem to find a lot of like minded people around here. And I don't get to down because my kids are pretty staunch conservatives, and my son hangs out with quite a few, so I have hope for the future! My daughter went through the middle school liberal phase but getting a job, dealing with the public, then having her paycheck attacked by the government spun her around!
So we try to laugh at the absurdities of MJ's memorial, although if this unrelenting press coverage doesn't stop I may have to get a gun and shoot the t.v.

Considering how the state universities have treated recruiters I'm kind of thinking we shouldn't have any armed forces in CA. Just give the state to Mexico and let them deal with the problems.
I have a lot of admiration for your son-in-law. I hope he's treated well out there.

Joe Klein is an ass! And I
July 7, 2009 - 21:37 ET by Clear thinkerJoe Klein is an ass! And I would like to top that off with go to hell.
I have been working very hard to spread a message that people should NOT be confusing Conservatism with Republicanism. When people want to throw out accusations that are racial in nature they had better differentiate between those of the GOP and those that are Conservatives.
So here's the deal JOE... Conservatives by nature and upbringing, have always judged people by the content of their character. Skin color to a Conservative has also always been an incidental, not good or bad, it just is what it is. However, I cannot say the same about Republicans as a whole. History shows that it was the Republican party did more for minorities in this country than Dems could ever dream of doing, and it was the Conservatives in the party that pushed the ideals of equality, so the party fortunately went along. Unfortunately, the GOP has changed so much over just the last decade, I can no longer make the claim that Republicans still believe in equality. Hell, I'm not sure what they believe in any more.
MESSAGE TO JOE KLEIN: We (Conservatives) have been told by the left so many times that we are racists that we decided to fight back. It's a small thing but at least it's something public so all can see. We wrote a 'pledge' (and a darn good one too) for Conservatives to sign, that explains how we have not, and am not racist. And the nice thing about it is... if we are ever in an argument with a lefty that wants to call someone a racist, that person need only lead the lefty to you're name on the "pledge" (see link). One other thing Joe, why is it that liberals are always the ones bringing up race? It's as if you want to start a fight. But as soon as the fight starts, you want to point in our direction like it's our fault. Well it's not! Some of the most racist people I have ever met are lifelong Democrats. People just like you Joe!

Ministry of Truth Working Overtime
July 8, 2009 - 04:34 ET by RR GOPI don't remember things being bad under Reagan...but I guess they were. I do seem to remember now that the door of opportunity was slammed shut on minorities back in the '80s under Reagan now that Joe Klink has enlightened me.
Thought crime is so insidious. I was a thought criminal and didn't even realize it!
One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
More anti-white hate from liberals
July 8, 2009 - 10:12 ET by Mike76Anti-white hatemongers like Klein like to smear white cities and places with terms like "white-bread fantasies" - as if there is something inherently wrong with something that's "white."
But they never have anything to say about the crime, poverty, and general decay that occurs in black or Mexican areas - except to blame whites for somehow causing it. And they NEVER use smears when talking about "minorites" They ONLY use smears (like "white-bread fantasies") when talking about whites.
Klien, and liberals in general, don't care about "a more diverse place from the Reagan fantasy." They only applaud "multiculturalism" if it harms white people. Have you ever heard them complain about the lack of "diversity" in places like Mexico or China? How about in places in the US like Harlem or all Mexican cities in California? Me neither.
Klein, and liberals in general, are anti-white. It's as simple as that.
