Whenever Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore releases a new documentary the reaction in the press is typically jubilant. Rave reviews. Fawning interviews which rarely ask tough questions. Oscar buzz aplenty.
But this time could be different.
Moore’s last film, “Slacker Uprising,” didn’t go straight to DVD. It went straight to download. Now, Moore’s catching heat from Movieline.com, the online film magazine which routinely taunts conservative targets like Gov. Sarah Palin. The site’s new Moore-related post swats the filmmaker for a less than sharp attempt at marketing his upcoming film about the country’s economic collapse. The movie blogger sets up his critique here:
Obviously, I don’t want this blog to get quoted on redstate.com or wherever, but there’s so much manufactured badness here:
This is only one example of a left-leaning site deciding not to carry water for Moore. Maybe Moore Nation (AKA the MSM) will fall in line soon enough. But with a liberal in the White House, the need on the Left to rally around Moore’s polemics decreases dramatically.
If that’s the case, there’s a better than average chance movie critics and entertainment reporters alike will see through Moore’s Everyman persona.

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 16:29 ET by Another Dead KennedyBT. I'm being defensive because you're complaining about a filmmaker who's been around for 20 years, and you haven't seen even one of his pictures. As the self proclaimed smartest-newsbuster, I'm sure you can see the fault in this. You can't complain about something you don't know about. It's ignorance, pure and simple. Now go watch one of his movies this weekend and I'll have a little more respect for you Monday morning.

I'm here to find out about the other side and participate in some good, healthy debates. Which I guess is what makes us different. I like to see both sides. You don't seem too obscure to me.
One thing I do know. When the Conservative people (that would be me) took umbrage with Michael Moore and gave him credence, the clear water would have been to ignore his drivel.
In retrospect the heat of the anger and hate directed at GWB allowed us to cloud our eyes to the irrelevance of this person. He is no film genius nor his he particularly smart. He is clever enough to grab an emotion and run it through a camera lens. That does not make him a Fellini, nor does it make him more than a mediocre Hollywood infused flash in the pan.
As it were, it looks like the talent has kicked him into the garbage can where he belongs. He is like a one-tune hit artist. He made a movie that got him some bucks; he capatilized on that; he died.

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 17:52 ET by Another Dead KennedyI'm sorry, but Moore is no one-hit wonder. I'm not saying you have to like him, and I'm fine if you hate him, but at least know what you're talking about before you attack. I'm not implying you're attacking him, and I'm fine with your reasons for not liking him. But to critique his films, it's kind of necessary to actually see one of them. He's done a bunch, and he'll do more.
But remember he's a documentarian. And I'm the first to admit there's nothing unbiased about a documentary.

I've watched three of them, and they left me with the impression that I'd just watched the gang-raping of Truth. When you cut-and-paste fragmented scenes from up to a dozen different events and try to pass them off as one, your work is more properly likened to a ransom note than a documentary.
There is a huge difference between accidental, unavoidable bias and deliberate, systematic deception. Michael Moore and Al Gore have made 'documentary' synonymous with 'propaganda' in little more than a decade.

My complaint started with the string of posters who claimed they hadn't seen any of his movies, but still felt compelled to criticize them. If you don't like his movies because you've seen at least one of them, I have no problem with that. But to critique something you've only heard about, mostly from people with a negative review of him already, it doesn't serve your argument well. Now when it comes to your statistics about misstatements, I can only ask that you provide some sort of proof of this argument. Any credible source will suffice, but it's not necessary because I'm sure there are in fact some misrepresentations to complete the story that the director intended to tell. Again, I've said this all along.

I take that back. Nature documentaries. Planet Earth is one of the greatest documentaries I've ever seen, especially in HD.
OK
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 19:30 ET by RukusI agree to a point. When anything ever appears to be climate change or man made whaterver, I disagree. We are too small to affect anything in nature (climate), then I have a problem. Otherwise I agree. Nature shows are obviously, lately, puting too much crap into climate change, which we have little, if no, effect on. Otherwise, ok.

NO ONE was in the hospital, except the mikey moore gang. All the doctors and nurses just milling around, ONLY attending to mikey's gang...
As if every Cubian is soo very healthy, doing back breaking work in the peoples gardens, repairing the peoples fleet of 50's vintage autos.
I didn't see roger and me, is mikey's plan like GM (government motors) is now?

Right, only if you happen to be a "poor, downtrodden, disenfranchised" UAW worker.
I suppose the UAW has a statue of Pizza The Hutt outside their headquarters. Or maybe its on the 18th green of their world class "private" golf course.

Fri, 06/19/2009 - 12:41 ET by AlanaIt kills me how people on the left don't want to admit to truth. This guy is worried that redstate or some other site might quote him.
(He figures he's safe because it's Obama's watch now, and Obama must be defended.)
Another example of those on the left prefering to deny things (or lie about them) rather than to be caught dead, ever, on "the wrong side," for even a moment. No matter what horrible things the "right" side does. They will never call out a one of them.
That might be principled or something.
Possibly because of topic
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 13:03 ET by TocanoIs it possible they are afraid of what even Michael Moore might do with his newest movie? If I'm not mistaken, I think his next movie focuses on the economic collapse, bailouts, TARP, etc. If that's the case, it's possible that libs are afraid of what populist Moore might put in his film which reflects badly on Dems. Specifically fearing those involved like Frank and Dodd and the Fed might get hit with collateral damage when Moore goes after Bush.
Moore is Not Needed
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 14:05 ET by allanfWhen Moore was Bashing Bush in Farenheit 911 or the health care system is Sicko that was okay. But the media won't allow his rants to put a stain on Obama. In fact, advocating reform of health care past what the chosen one chooses would not be permitted either.
It is party run media.

Outrage I say!
Sat, 06/20/2009 - 09:42 ET by ReaverThat is an insult to trailer trash nation wide not just in Michigan. For the record Moore is from Flint, MI. (The city whose gov. is talking about bulldozing large tracts of vacant land to make it more manageable, a new wrinkle on urban renewal) His current residence is a Manhattan townhouse apartment but he maintains a residence in Traverse City MI. to maintain his Michigan cred, lucky us. As far as films, I saw his first one, Roger & me because of it’s subject of the auto industry. The far left anti-capitalist theme came as no surprise, left wing and documentary almost being synonymous but as someone whose been around the area most of my life the degree of misinformation and outright falsehood was shocking to me. I think the best example I could give is the movie’s central theme, Moore running around with a camera and microphone trying to get then GM CEO Roger Smith to talk to him. I later learned that Smith did sit down for an interview but Moore didn’t use it when he decided it would be more entertaining to show him trying to duck him. Really says it all about his “documentaries” doesn’t it?
If stupidity got us into this mess,
then why can't it get us out?

The consumate faker
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 20:10 ET by mike221bHe's a polemicist, not a documentarian. The former has no need of truth while the later makes an attempt. Also he's from Davison, not Detroit. As nasty as Detroit is there is no need to further disrespect Motown by suggesting Moore is from there or Flint for that matter.

That picture makes him almost look normal
Fri, 06/19/2009 - 23:56 ET by ghblogHe actually looks sort of normal. What is unusual is that his mouth is closed. Once open, though he is one stupid guy, but he knows all about the auto industry because he is from Flint.
