Time's Klein Giddy For New Green Regulation of Auto Industry

Practically rubbing his hands in glee, Time magazine's Joe Klein exulted yesterday over Michigan Rep. John Dingell (D) losing out to the more liberal Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) for control of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Apparently Klein is happy that under Waxman the committee will succeed in decreasing both domestic energy and commerce with fresh, strict regulations on America's automakers. From his Nov. 20 Swampland blog post at Time.com:

Lord, things are moving fast...and also not. The stock market is moving south--fast. The number of jobless claims are moving north--fast. Economic panic is in the air...and the atmosphere is Washington is changing faster than a speeding ballot (ouch, sorry). There is a stirring in the Congress, too, where nothing of substance has happened in a long, long time. Today the hopelessly dopey auto makers received a couple of stark warnings: First, California's crusading Henry Waxman replaced the eternal John Dingell, patron saint of the gas-guzzlers, as Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is great news for those who are looking forward to the greening of Detroit. Then Nancy Pelosi called out the Big Three, saying no bailout without a plan. Now, no one really believes the Democrats will wit(h)hold money from the automakers--but the Big 3 would have to be stupider than idiotic not to understand that higher gas mileage standards and a whole bunch of other requirements are coming down the pike. They have very few, if any, defenders left in your nation's capital and that's real progress.

Ramping up industry-killing regulations in the midst of an economic downturn may be "real progress" to a well-paid liberal journalist in Manhattan. I doubt the sentiment is shared by Michiganers already facing the threat of double-digit unemployment levels.

Yea I live in Michigan and

Yea I live in Michigan and there is a dark cloud hanging over us.  We are taking a huge hit and it will only get worse for the forseeable future.  Eventually we may rise out of the ashes.  I have mixed feeling about the bailout since I live here I will first hand see the pain of what is to transpire... my ideology says no to the bailout but at the same time I say why is Detroit being treated differently then the financial sector ... the financial sector was mismanaged, the people within, were and are overpaid just like the auto industry, they suffered from a lack of vision just like the auto industry ... but congress and the Bush administration has no problem throwing 700 billion at them and then Paulson doesnt even use the money as intended .....I guess I just dont see the difference.

Say no to the Bailout, let GM Fail

The financial sector bailout was a joke that will do nothing but create inflation, a GM Bailout will do nothing but ensure the demise of the U.S. Auto industry.

I was disgusted yesterday

I was disgusted yesterday when Waxman won that powerful seat yesterday...I posted as such, it won't just be the auto-industry that gets hurt/killed either...

WE are in for a huge downfall in so many ways in my opinion, plus congress has this, and they are going to use it...big time, it has only been used once before since it was created in '96 I think it was, it will undo any law that passed that they want since last May, and they will do just that, they will impose their will where Obama cannot via undoing EO's made by Bush and inserting his own...

Very spooky times ahead folks...fasten your seat belts.

No better in upstate ny

I live in upstate NY. Home of Xerox, kodak and B&L. All three have suffered huge losses. We have a "brain drain" currently underway where there are more people leaving the state for better jobs. Employment gains are stagnant--have been for 2 decades nearly. Our manufacturing is nearly bust. Our only employment gains have been schools, state and medical fields. Laid off factory workers are becoming nurses.

None of the factories here filed BK. Xerox stock hit an all time low a few years back. I thought for sure they were going under. But the co. is still here. Much leaner than before but still here.

What automakers need to do, IMHO, is restructure. They could file BK and do it the old fashion way. There will be job loss in the unions no matter what you do. The union jobs are being replaced by robots and out sourcing. The unions (xerox has one) has become a useless dinosaur in today’s age. They have done nothing for Xerox but take union dues from already strapped workers. Wage freezes, benefit cuts, retire cuts. It's all going bye, bye.

Right now, the union worker's goal at Xerox is to keep their job another 2 years when the next contract is up and more losses come down the pipe.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Just what automakers need...more regulations!

Why does it never occur to liberals that the cost of mandates is very real?!  Forcing higher MPG standards right in the middle of the collapse of the auto industry is ludicrous at best and downright dangerous at worst.  So, in addition to retooling for hybrid cars, those cars better get 25% (or whatever it turns out to be) better fuel economy than today?  Oh boy...get your boots out...it's going to get deep in here soon!

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

"CO2 for different people has different attractions. After all, what is it? - it’s not a pollutant, it’s a product of every living creature’s breathing, it’s the product of all plant respiration, it is essential for plant life and photosynthesis, it’s a product of all industrial burning, it’s a product of driving – I mean, if you ever wanted a leverage point to control everything from exhalation to driving, this would be a dream. So it has a kind of fundamental attractiveness to bureaucratic mentality." - Richard S. Lindzen, Ph.D. Professor of Atmospheric Science, MIT

I think the problem is the relative salaries

The average UAW member 'earns' about $100k a year or more with the mandatory OT. Moving to another state might get them a job sooner, but it will be for half the pay. Looks like MI us going to need more $$ for all those out of work UAW members.

I bet that Toyota and Nissan will be expanding their factories down south soon.

When automobile plant

When automobile plant assembly workers are receiving higher wages and better benefits than scientists, engineers, business managers, tradesmen and a variety of skilled labor, that is proof there is something very wrong.

The Big 3 need a Chapter 11.  This punishes the investors for allowing the present board to sit.  It punsihes the Board of Directors by dismissing them.  It punishes the executives by elimintating their stock options.   The trustees will dissolve the Union contracts under the authority of the Court because they are not in the interests of the creditors.  If the Unions strike, they will find themselves in a chapter 7 liquidation.  Best of all, that greedy union will be all but dissolved.

God, don't tempt me with

God, don't tempt me with such a beautiful dream!

Why would Toyota and

Why would Toyota and Nissan want former UAW people?  They aren't going to want to work the same job for $45/hr.  Let's face it those $100/hr or $75/hr jobs are gone for good and those so called green jobs will never pay what they were getting either.

After living on 39 weeks of unemployment pay, any job is going to look good and a change of scenery will be refreshing.  It's time for reality to sink in and all those people who were in the Jobs Bank drawing top pay for sitting on the side due to automation are going to stop playing cards and socializing, the jig is up.

No, I feel so sorry for those workers in Detroit and Flint. Of course we also felt sorry for the buggy whip makers and the horse-drawn wagoneers too didn't we. Did they go to work making things people wanted to buy or did they just sit and wait for a handout?

The UAW and its members could get creative and boldly band together to buy one or all of the big 3 automakers. Will they?

"The UAW and its members could get creative and boldly band together to buy one or all of the big 3 automakers. Will they? "

I wouldn't buy a company destined for collapse because of unrealistic concessions to a union. Would you??

Okie

There are a lot of people that work for the Big 3 (and related companies) that are not UAW or union employees.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy

I'm with you, MV

I'm here in the center of the disaster, and can tell you that there's much more than UAW workers who will be affected if the (medium sized) 3 go down.  In fact, I could probably, with a few degrees of separation, show you why you should care about our auto manufacturers.  I think this is a case where the dominoe effect could continue throughout this country in pretty short order.

That said, I'm not for giving the automotive companies any money until they've taken this to the limits of what can be done in a free market type situation.  There are plenty of professionals who are overpaid, but the unions could also tighten their belts.  Get rid of the "job bank", let them meet the real world with their benefits, and reduce the hourly pay to get them more in line with the rest of the industry.   Preserve the jobs that can be preserved by coming back to reality.

Right now, the unions are being told that they don't need to give an inch because Obama will get them the money.  They're strangling this country, and yet they don't get that they've swallowed the hand and arm that feeds them and are about to get to the vital organs.

That is nice but this is not Socialism

This is not socialism but capitalism, if they fail it is because they suck and should fail. The government has no right to bail suck companies out. The dominoe effect is nonsense. So what if suck car dealers go under. Part suppliers are not going anywhere because all these cars will still need to be fixed.

500% to 1000% more.

Keep it up. Green regulations and other government mandates have contributed to car prices rising 500% to 1000% in the last 40 years. That’s why people hang on to their cars for 7 to 10+ years, instead of trading every 2 to 3 years. What other product, other than gas, has risen that much?

So, yeah, bring on more green regulations and cars will cost even more and will be even deadlier in a crash due to light construction to meet mile per gallon requirements.

Even our poor people have more than most. Eighty percent of the world is a 3rd world shithole. I always thought that the left was prone to delusions and magical thinking not understanding anything about the real world. Maybe the "One" can do something useful. Instead of a civilian defense force maybe make it mandatory for college graduates to do peace corp type work in the 3rd world shithole of their choice for a year or two. Maybe it will open their eyes and appreciate what they have.

Stop replying if you're not going to answer the question.

I did answer the question

Your question is irrelevant because we should not bail them out period. Any question as to how we should bail them out is absolutely irrelevant if you understand economics. The economy cannot be planned by central planners with some special bailout policy or requirements. Your question is flawed by it's premise and is nothing but Socialism which has failed.

Censored Global Warming Videos

No, you didn't.  It is

No, you didn't.

It is possible, on this plane of existence, that the government may indeed bail out Detroit. This is an actual probability.

So, given that it MIGHT occur, don't you think the government should put stipulations on the money, or should they just hand it over and say, "Now go have fun, you crazy kids."

Who Cares!

Stipulation to socialism is still socialism. What part of economics do you not understand? Are you under the delusional thinking that some stipulation is going to make damn bit of difference for a socialist policy? Stipulations are central planning, just like bailouts are. Both will fail so it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. If these businesses were viable REGULAR banks would make them the loans.

Bal, I agree with PT, the

Bal, I agree with PT, the question is irrelevant in terms of Capitalism.  However, given that Obama and the Dems must pander to their union constituency even if it eventually will cause it's demise, I will respond. The conditions should be as follows:

The least harmful response would be to as a condition of getting bridge loans to carry them through the short term difficulty, they must declare Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, must do away with the Job Bank, must renegotiate the union contracts to similar levels of Toyota and Nissan, change the health benefit plan to reflect the national average, etc...in other words cut all the uncompetitive benefits and policies that got them into this situation.  There will be NO ownership stake in any of these companies for the taxpayer since if they go into chapter 7, you get zilch for your share of stock because bonds, loans and creditors are first in the pecking order to get their money back.

In the end, the only real help for the big 3 is domestic drilling that keeps the price of oil below $60/barrel and gas less than $2/gal.  Failing that solution, they are doomed, period.  High energy prices are what really derailed the economy, the mortgage meltdown was touched off by this rise IMO when economically marginal people started getting laid off an not paying their mortgages.

Money

If the guvmint gave us 30,000 dollars each, we could all buy a new car and save Detroit.

Screw Detroit

I'm keeping my money at home. I'll save Georgetown, and I'm not talking about the lair of latte lapping liberals in D.C. I'm talking about the one in Kentucky.

I foolishly bought an American car last year after have never owned one. The thing is an absolute piece of junk. There's always some little problem with it, and there have been some major problems with it, too.

I have a good understanding of Fix On Race Day, now. Found on road dead. Fix or repair daily.

It's the one and only American car I will ever own, and it is getting ready to go up for sale next spring. I've already refused to sell it to family members because I don't want them hating me.

I've got a Mazda with 194,000 miles on it. I've replaced batteries, brakes, and tires. I put nearly 200,000 on a Subaru. I sold a Honda Civic with 112,000 miles on it to a college kid. He's had no problems with it. It was a mistake to sell it, but my family had outgrown it.

Detroit will turn into the world's largest ghost town. It will be the American Atlantis.

Since 1999

I have purchased 1Dodge extra cab Pickup over 130,000 miles, would take it anywhere and do. 1 Dodge 2001 Neon, over 140,000 miles on it, only thing we did was change the timing belt at 75k now it is due again. 1 2003 Sebring over 80k on it and nothing just regular maint, we just bought the wife a new Avenger, she loves it. So dont go around suggesting that folks are not satistfied with SOME American cars. We clearly are. BTW since fuel prices have been high, I drive the Neon, still gets about 32mpg.

I dont like bailing them out either, but the 2 Toyotas I bought in the same time frame are long gone dead. I will never buy another!
