ABC's "View" co-host Joy Behar dismissively called Joe Wurzelbacher's [Joe the Plumber] dream of owning a plumbing company a "fantasy" on the October 16 program. Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck called her out on it (audio available here):
JOY BEHAR, co-host: Joe the Plumber doesn't have a business yet, he's fantasizing about a business he's going to have.
ELISABETH HASSELBECK, co-host: Fantasizing?! This is a man who's trying to realize his hard work.
BEHAR: Excuse me! Fantasizing is a very legitimate term to describe somebody who's predicting the future for themselves. Creative visualization, okay.
HASSELBECK: Fantasizing is a dangerous thing to say because it assumes that it is not attainable.
[...]
BEHAR: ...According towhat I understand, Obama plans on taxing you if you have over 250 [thousand dollars] a year income, right. So, Joe the plumber is upset that he won't have an incentive or blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But let's just assume that Obama will have a great program, economic program, and everybody will do better, so Joe the Plumber may make a million dollars. So he'll be paying taxes on a million. Would he rather pay taxes on a million or 250?
HASSELBECK: Now that's a fantasy, right there, first of all...

October 16, 2008 - 16:14 ET by GameGridAs it was said by other posters above, it's a dream, not a fantasy. I had a dream about opening my own business for years and one that is not typically mentioned when it comes to small businesses, an arcade. I dreamt about it but I also planned it out and as of May this year I have been running it. And despite the way the economy has bounced around we've been doing OK. Not great yet as it takes time (and a lot of money) to get your name out there but I'm glad that I got a chance to start before Senator Government decides to begin an all-out assault on entrepreneurship and the real American Dream. I would love to start making 250k+ a year - that means I could expand, hire more employees, provide better services to my customers and most importantly secure my finances for my family but I wholeheartedly agree with Joe - if you're going to be punished for seeking such success then it really does diminish or remove the desire to become rich.
Congratulations!
October 16, 2008 - 17:09 ET by soulpileCongratulations! Especially on getting your business started before all hell potentially breaks loose.
Right now I dream of owning a small business a few years down the line and am trying to get employed in the business I like so I can have hands-on experience. However, I don't know if I'll be able to actually start anything in the future, so I'm holding off making permanent plans until after the election. Obama's plans are not conducive to mine!

October 16, 2008 - 22:29 ET by GameGridThanks, I appreciate it. I got in where it was apparent that things were going to get worse, but I decided on doing it anyways. It's a big risk but I think that the right ideas and the right plan will work even in a down economy. It certainly is more difficult and stressful though. In my situtation, arcades historically do well in downturns, probably because people need an escape from other stressful things so I plan on being well-positioned for whatever happens. I do agree though that Obama does not make me optimistic for the near future with his Marxist ideology.

Many people who have thriving small businesses started out small. If they can buy an existing business, they get the benefit of the original owner's work and continue to service the customers. Everyone wins in this scenario, until punative taxes take the earnings of the business owner. When that happens everyone can just sit back and collect their money from Barak. (sarc off)

Well done, EH! As I've advised my wife and children, listen carefully to what Leftists say, because they have difficulty knitting a coherent argument. the Behar-Hasselbeck exchange is a classic example.
Not suprisingly, Obama made a similar argument on the post-debate campaign trail, implying that Joe the Plumber's creds are suspect if he plans on earning $250,000 from the business.
But the point Joe was making was that the business itself would be earning over that threshhold amount, and thus the increased tax on the business's income would reduce the incomes of the owner and employees.
