Writing Sen. Joe Biden's (D-Del.) recent suggestion that it's "patriotic" to pay higher taxes, Associated Press reporter Douglass K. Daniel provided a bit of cover for the Obama running mate by citing a left-leaning tax group and ignoring Obama's plans to hike capital gains taxes.:
Although Republican John McCain claims that Obama would raise taxes, the independent Tax Policy Center and other groups conclude that four out of five U.S. households would receive tax cuts under Obama's proposals.
"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
The Tax Policy Center may be independent of a political party apparatus, but it is decidedly liberal in orientation, a joint venture of two liberal think tanks, the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution.

American patriotism is FIGHTING taxes
September 18, 2008 - 13:09 ET by ChrisMillsYour comment is excellent! Biden should go back to school and learn about the American revolution (I'm not surprised that he finished 73rd out 85 classmates in law school). Our forefathers founded this country (and thus defined American patriotism) on fighting unjust taxes that were a pittance compared to what they are now (much less what they would be under Obama's dictatorship)
it's "patriotic" to pay higher taxes

September 18, 2008 - 13:04 ET by TD in FLThe more Biden talks, the more I'm liking Obama's decision to select him as VP. This guy is a walking gaffe-machine who is clearly out of touch with the fundamentals of American values.
So patriotism can only be achieved by the rich and only through the act of giving more than your fair share of taxes? What a distorted view of this country Biden has. Aside from the leeches of society who enjoy the handouts, I can't imagine there are many middle-class people that would not take pause at that statement and give it a bit more thought. Isn't the American dream that you can acheive anything you work hard for? Apparently in Biden's eyes it's: "You work hard, your lazy neighbor gets a cut." Yeah, that will motivate people to prosper.
The McCain camp needs to focus more on who the $250,000 on up income bracket is composed of... small business owners. I think there are a lot of uniformed voters who think that it's just rich people and consequently, are likely to be indifferent about raising their taxes. If they beat this issue down and help voters understand that small businesses are crucial to this economy, then it will be clear how this socialisitc tactic will aid in crippling this economy further though job losses and reduced innovation (one of the only competitive advantages we still have over other countries).
One more thing
September 18, 2008 - 13:17 ET by TD in FLI also enjoyed this line in the AP article:
McCain released a television ad Thursday charging that Obama would increase the size of the federal government amid an economic crisis. Contending that "a big government casts a big shadow on us all," the ad features the image of a shadow slowly covering a sleeping baby as a narrator misstates the reach of the Obama tax proposal.
Did he actually opin that the ad was misleading? What a tool. Associalist Press.

Million Man Math
September 18, 2008 - 13:11 ET by mcg0125I wasn't aware that 80% of Americans pay federal income taxes. But hey!...I'm racist for pointing that out.
The Tax Policy Institute...
September 18, 2008 - 14:07 ET by 3strikesis obviously in the tank for Obama. The only way that they can actually support Obama's assertion that "90% of American households will get a tax cut," is to perform some extremely funny math.
How do 90% of Americans get a tax cut, when 40% of Americans end up paying $0 or get a larger refund than they paid?
How far do you lower taxes on the 20% of Americans who are paying less than 1% of their income in taxes?
The only way to cut taxes for the bottom 40% would be to hand over MORE money through credits. That is NOT a tax cut. That is a welfare handout.
The only way to actually believe that 90% of Americans will get a tax cut (especially after all the big government programs Obama wants to put in place) is through utter and willing ignorance.
You people keep distorting
September 18, 2008 - 14:12 ET by HockeyKidYou people keep distorting Barack's positions. He doesn't say 90% of American households will receive a tax cut. It's 95%! Stop distorting what he says!
You're right...
September 18, 2008 - 14:46 ET by 3strikesI am sorry...
Although, according to the Tax Policy Institute, the number is 4 out of 5 households. Maybe I'm wrong but isn't that 80% and not the 95% claimed by Obamessiah?
Then I'll be patriotic when ...
September 18, 2008 - 18:54 ET by callmeconservativeI would be more willing to increase my patriotism (taxes) when government (executive and legislative branches) increases its patriotism by employing my "patriotism" in an efficient manner to build the country to which I am patriotic: Build the economy (incentives to people doing the right things, not bailing out poor decision making executives); help up's not hand outs; national security; educational choice; etc.
Many charities proclaim their efficiency (80 cents out of every dollar goes to help the needy). I would like to see governments efficiency numbers (welfare is nothing more than a poorly ran charity).
When was the last time government restructured, had layoffs, and reported their numbers to shareholders (voters). Just a thought.
