Interviewing 11-year-old Scholastic News reporter Jack Greenberg shortly before 3 p.m. EDT, MSNBC's David Shuster asked the junior journalist whether he had any problem being skeptical -- sorta like Lee Cowan? -- of the people he interviews. Greenberg answered [audio available here]:
I try to stay objective through all my work. I try to do my best not to keep a political opinion, because as a journalist I always try to balance it out with what is on the other side.
Shuster then asked if Greenberg ever asked any leading questions, or if he knew "how to do that."
I always press them for like, if like a candidate makes an accusation about them, I'll have them give like their side of the story, because that's important to journalism, how you always get two sides. There's two sides to every story.

Maybe there is hope for the future yet with examples like young Greenberg.

Instead of going to journalism school, he should probably be teaching it. Shuster probably thought he was doing a puff piece til the kid opened his mouth and handed him a lesson in Journalistic Ethics 101. A class that Shuster and most of his colleagues obviously skipped.
Well, he's eleven, and he has plenty of years to get jaded or corrupted before he makes it into primetime. But doesn't it give you the slightest bit of hope that journalism ain't dead in '08?
For what it's worth, jaded me wrote the epitaph on objective journalism back in '92 when 60 Minutes gave the sleazeball Clintons a forum to spin their oh-so-happy marriage in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I never really cared whether he had affairs or not (except when he lied about one under oath), but the complete failure of 60 Minutes and the other news outlets at the time to call into question his integrity, character, and moral authority to lead this nation, was the beginning of the end for journalistic ethics.
Nonetheless let's keep the spotlight on Jack. Keep the faith, my friend, and remember that Keith Olbermann is only a figment of your imagination.
