Recent polling shows that Sen. John McCain is in a tightening race with Sen. Barack Obama and that McCain leads Obama in at least two polls of LIKELY voters -- Rasmussen and USA/Gallup. The Illinois senator's Europe junket and McCain exploiting Obama's penchant for platitudes with clever negative ads may explain a second wind hitting McCain's sails.
But to Newsweek's Conventional Wisdom (see screencap above), McCain's campaigning amounted to "tomfoolery" that temporarily put the Illinois senator off-message while making McCain sound like "Karl Rove channeled by Joe Piscopo."
That sounds like conventional wisdom to partisan Democratic operatives, not hard-bitten veteran Washington insiders looking at the campaigns objectively.

Constant Down Arrows
August 4, 2008 - 16:03 ET by ElyasBesides the constant down arrow they give to McCain each week, they could also include a down arrow for the amount of subscriptions to Newsweek.
Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.

Had obama not
August 4, 2008 - 17:21 ET by MidAmericaHad obama not amassed his early dem primary lead hillary probably would have beaten him Time is not obama's friend. Now he's on the same downward trajectory with McCain. I saw a certain female dem operative on TV that was a hillary supporter who had a slight 'I told you so' smile when talking about recent poll numbers.
And it must have bwoken
August 4, 2008 - 18:38 ET by motherbeltAnd it must have bwoken their widdow hearts to give Obama just the neutral sign.
And they blame it on McCain: the description says "McCain's tomfoolery knocks him off message. Needs to find a humorous way to deal with it."
Not entirely without justification

Well, considering partisan Democrats are the only ones still reading Newsweek, it's more like pandering to your audience.
A gun in your hand beats a cop on the phone.
Enough said.

Isn't it sweet?
August 4, 2008 - 22:16 ET by pbthinkerCan you remember when rich folk used to say to the peons, "Wouldn't you love to be me?" Now, we have Newsweek, putting out something like this and asking the same question. My point is that Newsweek puts out something, as subjective as this, and wants people to believe it. They fully expect people will believe this. How naive, on their part.
