Finally an admission that the surge in Iraq has worked.
What's the catch? You guessed it, it helps the Obamessiah.
From the July 24 "Conventional Wisdom" on Newsweek.com.
[up arrow] Obama: It worked--but, ironically, benefiting Obama more than McCain.
Is that why the latest tracking poll by Rasmussen shows Obama with a small single-digit lead?:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Barack Obama attracting 45% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. When "leaners" are included, it's Obama 48% and McCain 45% (see recent daily results). Tracking Polls are released at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day.
The Real Clear Politics poll average presently shows Obama with a 4.9% edge, a healthy lead, but hardly a commanding one considering public concern over the economy and the war in Iraq.

"Obamessiah"
July 24, 2008 - 10:41 ET by zeestephenApologies for being off topic...
Ken Shepherd's use of "Obamessiah" in this post is an expression that has become commonplace in RightSide politics.
I like the term, and use it myself, and chuckle every time I see it.
Bottom line, though, it is a serious, mocking insult.
Has anyone heard or read criticism of this expression from any LeftSide sources?
I haven't heard a peep from anybody.
Seems odd, so maybe I've missed it?
Here is a thought::
July 24, 2008 - 11:31 ET by needleLeftists are seriously conflicted about the messiah concept. They think it is great in theory (e.g, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, Chavez, etc); but on the other hand they have real problems with a lot of people who insist that the real Messiah came and walked the earth two millennia ago with a lot of consequences that cut across the liberal grain.
They may just feel it is best to ignore the mocking moniker; fussing about it may only encourage its use.

Obama-colored glasses
July 24, 2008 - 10:52 ET by ChuckM from PAThe Spinmeisters are at it again, where just by wearing their Obama-colored glasses, they can see anything that happens as being a benefit to Obama, and the Obama-Kool-Aid drinkers will believe it.
How does it benefit Obama
July 24, 2008 - 09:50 ET by Free ThinkerHow does it benefit Obama when he still won't recognize it worked and said if faced with the same decision he would still vote against it? Yes, it is Newsweek, but this is the leftist media echo chamber, they just say something absurd like this until they have all convinced themselves it must be true. Obama's trip to Iraq and Afghanistan was an embarrassment for his campaign if not for the incredible spin of the msm.
I am wondering how they can
July 24, 2008 - 11:11 ET by TruthMongerI am wondering how they can call this a plus for Obama
I mean this is the typical BS that "news"week tries to pull off every week - but this one is so AUDACIOUSLY HOPEFUL even for the bds msm
it's actually a huge plus for NB
so I'm going to frame it:)

July 24, 2008 - 13:19 ET by mvfreemanHere is an article by conservative writer Jonah Goldberg that expresses the same sentinment:

Newsweek....what a joke
July 24, 2008 - 09:55 ET by Pha PhaIts funny with all these polls giving Obama the lead. I live in a very blue state(MA) and just about all people I talk to say that they can't and won't pull the lever for "The One". Then again all people I talk to are hard working Americans who are sick of paying taxes and funding the lazy class. Go figure...............
Who are they polling?

Surge bad=Obama
Surge Good= McCain
Surge works good for whom?
The CW is NOT Newsweek's opinion
July 24, 2008 - 11:01 ET by Agrarian-DecentralistThis is not an "admission" by Newsweek that the surge worked or anything else. As I pointed out in response to one of Mr. Shepherd's pieces last month that made a similar claim regarding the CW column, the magazine used to point out that "The CW is not NEWSWEEK's opinion, but an informal distillation of the ever-changing thinking of Beltway pundits and the chattering classes."
Oh, well, that’s a relief!
July 24, 2008 - 11:38 ET by needleFor a moment I thought that this might mean that we would start getting some news from the MSM about the surge and how well it is working. I guess there is still no threat of that happening.

Question on Polls. What
July 24, 2008 - 11:03 ET by bassndudeQuestion on Polls. What makes these polls more accurate than the past polls? Seems to me that they missed the mark in the last two elections. They were not right then, not even the exit polls were correct. Now what is it that makes me belive these?
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
You guys have it all wrong,
July 24, 2008 - 11:25 ET by gopsteveYou guys have it all wrong, it's Conventional MSM Wisdom...C'mon you all!!!
They all sit around the newsroom, maybe calling the folks at Time or the WaPo, and come up with this, They after all, represent all of us!
I agree with Newsweek on this one
July 24, 2008 - 11:49 ET by cjbreischAnd this is something I mentioned a month ago on my blog. In short, success in Iraq is a bad thing for McCain because it takes Iraq off the table as a political opportunity. The general populace is no longer concerned about Iraq. It's "out of sight; out of mind". People are far more concerned about domestic issues, an area of weakness for McCain.
So, Newsweek gets one right. But as the adage goes, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Good point.
July 24, 2008 - 13:29 ET by mvfreemanNational Review's Jonah Goldberg said the same thing.
Yes, I caught that...
July 24, 2008 - 14:15 ET by cjbreischEven mentioned it in this post on my blog.
Jonah and Newsweek (and Tom Bevan, btw) are only a month late to my party. :)
