Can those rascally Republicans once again dupe otherwise well-educated, smart pro-choice women into sacrificing their womb on the altar of Republican presidential power?!
That's the sentiment you might expect from deep within the bowels of NARAL Pro-Choice America or Planned Parenthood, but it was essentially the question that Time's Amy Sullivan posed in her June 23 article, "Will Pro-Choice Women Back McCain?"
Sullivan's thesis boiled down to this: pro-life Republican candidates do as well as they do with some pro-choice voters because they throw out some bones trot out their pro-choice spouses and pro-choice feature speakers at Republican conventions to throw pro-choice Republicans and independents a bone, while Democrats are ham-handed in their efforts to downplay their pro-choice policies (emphasis mine):
From Pat Nixon, who declared "I believe abortion is a personal choice," to Betty Ford, who praised the Supreme Court's judgment in Roe as "a great, great decision" to Laura Bush, who on the eve of her husband's inauguration said she did not think he would appoint justices who would overturn Roe, pro-choice wives have long tried to signal to voters that this particular Republican President would not focus on abortion.
Those same Republican candidates have also traditionally benefited from the Democratic handling of the abortion issue. In 2004, the Republican National Convention featured keynote speeches by pro-choice politicians on three out of the four nights. By contrast, Democrats kept a pro-life minister off their stage and most Democratic speakers voiced their commitment to a woman's right to choose, while uttering not a word about supporting policies that would prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place.
In essence, while the GOP has largely tried to keep its base quietly comforted, Democrats have seemed compelled to make public shows of allegiance to pro-choice activists. The result is that pro-choice voters hear little from Republican candidates to upset them, even as pro-life voters have their differences with the Democratic Party's abortion stance highlighted for all to see. Not surprisingly, the two approaches show up at the ballot box: in 2000, 38% of Bush's voters were pro-choice while only 22% of Gore's were pro-life. Those percentages closed in 2004, but only slightly.
But wait, doesn't all of that speak to the problem lying with the Democratic Party being unable to convince enough pro-life voters that it's not a radically left-wing party on the issue of abortion? It would appear that way, as Sullivan herself admits that "Democrats have seemed compelled to make public shows of allegiance" to abortion activists.
Nah, the Democrats' poor electoral fortunes in presidential races can't be due to the rabid radicalism of its pro-choice activist base. It has to be because Republicans can dupe gullible women into voting for them! Surely there's no better explanation, such as pro-choice Republican voters casting their ballots on a whole range of issues with which they, shockingly enough as Republicans, agree with the GOP (tax cuts, national defense, judicial restraint).
And so Sullivan dutifully closed her article by parroting what is bound to be NARAL's mantra on McCain this election year: he's no maverick from his party on abortion (emphasis mine):
That's why NARAL and other groups are gearing up this year to target pro-choice women who fall outside of their universe of members and activists, a strategy they tested in the 2006 mid-term elections. "We identify the Republican women; we get out the information about candidates' positions," says Keenan. "We call them, we knock on doors, and once we've persuaded them, we get them to the polls." It worked in 2006, and this year she sees "enormous potential to move those women into the Obama column." But in order to do that, Keenan and her allies will have to find some way to drive home the point that when it comes to the Republican presidential tradition of obscuring strong pro-life views with moderate rhetoric, John McCain is anything but a maverick.

Democrats with the "centrist" view? nah
June 24, 2008 - 10:43 ET by exLibWe always hear about "the middle", the "center" and how the radical right-wing doesn't care about bein reasonable with regards to abortion but you rarely here as mentioned above by Ken that the left is far more radical and militant about it's pro-abortion at all costs stance - no compromise.
I once heard someone, can't remember who, say that partial-birth abortion is an issue EVERYONE except the most radical left, pro-abortion person could agree on. Yet, even supposedly "centrist" judges, congressman and mister "3rd way" Clinton vetoed it.
Logic weeping again
June 24, 2008 - 11:27 ET by KC MulvilleHow's this for keen analysis?
Look at that closely. In other words, when some voters are told that McCain doesn't agree with them, the voters don't support him as much. Like, wow, what a concept! Who'd have guessed?
This is just a barn of straw men. Sullivan suggests that the anti-abortion Republican candidates use their pro-choice wives to send out mixed signals about abortion. That would be a clever ruse, if it were true, but it isn't. Her first example is Pat Nixon, but she doesn't count because Richard Nixon didn't give a damn about abortion. The second example is Betty Ford, but Sullivan forgets that Jerry Ford was already pro-choice. And she conveniently skips over Nancy Reagan, since it disproves her whole theory -- remember, Ronald Reagan was pro-life, unrepentantly, and never used Nancy to mollify anyone. There goes that theory.
Sullivan also conveniently ignores the presence of pro-life women. For instance, she claims that McCain is wooing Hillary's supporters, and she just takes it for granted that all Hillary supporters are pro-choice. I happen to know a few who aren't. But even if the vast number of Hillary supporters are pro-life, that doesn't mean that all women are. Not every woman supported Hillary. There are some Republican pro-life women. Maybe once pro-life women hear how dedicated McCain is to the pro-life cause, he'll increase his support from them. Sullivan simply ignores any of that.
Sullivan gives us a hop-skip-and-jump of hazy assumptions, but she suddenly treats them all as fact. Sullivan claims that people equate maverick to moderate, and moderate means pro-choice. (Really?) She then accuses McCain of deliberately hiding behind that fraud (you know, the fraud that she just invented). And then, Sullivan suggests that the reason women don't abandon McCain is that they don't know that he's a pro-lifer hiding behind this fraud. McCain, however, has never hidden his position. Sullivan invented this conspiracy, and accuses McCain of fraud, despite the glaring proof to the contrary.
Logic weeps.
They don't know
June 24, 2008 - 18:35 ET by GrannyGrump42""The NARAL survey found that when pro-choice women are told that McCain believes the Roe v. Wade decision should be overturned, their support for him drops substantially.""
Thanks to the MSM, most voters, including "prochoice" women, think that Roe only permits first trimester abortions, and then only after a consultation with a doctor. Support for Roe plummets when people find out what it actually is.
Why don't they try a survey in which they tell prochoice women that Obama is okay with abortionists sticking live=born babies in the utility closet to die if they happened to be born during the course of an intended abortion? What would his popularity level be then? I have YET to meet an Obama supporter who knows how truly extreme he is on abortion.

Truly pro-choice
June 24, 2008 - 18:30 ET by GrannyGrump42A truly pro-CHOICE voter would be far more happy with a prolife candidate for any office than they would be with a NARAL-approved candidate, if only they knew the truth of what the abortion lobby is all about.
The abortion lobby fights for the "right" of abortionists to lie to women -- ostensibly to "ease the stress of a difficult decision". They fight against informed consent, they fight against standards of care to protect women from seedy back-alley butchers, they fight against even such simple things as collecting data on abortions. The abortion lobby even successfully fought a bill in Illinois that would have required the abortionist to VERIFY THE PREGNANCY before proceeding with an abortion!
The average prochoice citizen, if he ever found out what the abortion lobby stood for, would be so totally outraged that there'd be riots outside every Planned Parenthood in America.
But the MSM doesn't want the prochoice voter to know that.

I have one that just finished her 1st year in colloege with HONORS! My youngest will be finishing highschool next year with HONORS! They were raised that way. I would never have considerer killing them no matter what! Adoption is the answer not abortion! Pro-Choice is murder, plain and simple! Don't kill our future just because it is convenient for you, let the child have a chance to make a difference in our world, they ARE our future. OK, rant over, sorry, just a sore subject. Unfortunately, we would deserve it.

My daughter really loves God and tries to spread His word as much as possible, she gets a lot of opposition but continues on, she's a trooper! I love all the children, they are very important. Keep up the prayers, we WILL win! We are all God's children and should be given every chance to suceed.
