The Cold War wasn't really a war per se but a decades-long struggle with the Soviets and their proxies, yet it was not and is not tagged dismissively in print news media as the "Cold War." Yet the same convention was not followed recently in the pages of the Washington Post when it comes to the Global War on Terrorism in the Washington Post.
From Dan Eggen's May 23 article, "Bush Tours Once-Squalid Latrine":
With 17,000 paratroopers assembled in formation, Bush gave a speech praising their efforts and declaring that the United States was "on our way to victory" in Iraq. He also presented awards for nine soldiers, two of them posthumously, and attended a private dedication for a memorial to the "Global War on Terrorism."
The White House and the U.S. government use the term -- sometimes referred to as the Global War on Terror -- and servicemen who fit the proper criteria may wear the Global War on Terrorism Medal and/or the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

MSM Forgets
May 24, 2008 - 03:23 ET by expatriotIt is a shame that the MSM is so dismissive of the sacrifices that are made daily that ensure they have their freedoms not found in other countries. I fought in Afghanistan and we were forgotten except on sites like this. It is only when there is a tragedy of some sort that they report the "news".
Ken, I am not in any way surprised or dismayed that they are the way they are. To me that is a problem. We should all be surprised and dismayed.
MSM responsibility
May 24, 2008 - 06:21 ET by NortoI personally hold them accountable for at least 1/2 of the nearly 5,000 US deaths over there along with most of the horrible injuries that will be life-long struggles. Had they and their democrat pals had gotten behind all our troops including the POTUS and the MISSION, this might still not be over, but the losses would be less.
Similarly, this bunch of do-nothings in DC might have made a start on addressing some of the pressing issues at home. Like starting to get government out of the way of real progress, and cutting out the progressive bent of the socialists trying to run the Republic into the ground.
I'm going to give the
May 24, 2008 - 07:27 ET by motherbeltI'm going to give the benefit of the doubt...maybe it is literally a quote, because they are using the term from the Medals?
It would not appear like that
May 24, 2008 - 07:39 ET by expatriotMB,
The citations would not put "Global War on Terrorism" in the body of the citation. It would be an integral part of the citation and not a highlighted section. On my awards from Afghanistan there was no separation from the body of the citation. I cannot see it being the case here.
call me "not surprised"
May 24, 2008 - 08:42 ET by mom_roxThere are several instances of news items and newspaper editorials (including a CNN caption) using the phrase:
so-called war on terrorism.
A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.
- George Bernard Shaw, 1944
another thought on this
May 24, 2008 - 08:57 ET by mom_roxWould Eggen had used the quotes if he had written about a different war?:
for a memorial [to] "World War I."
A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.

Loving One's Country
May 24, 2008 - 10:47 ET by JDWWhat efforts have the lib controlled congress made to support our voluntary troops?
When was the last time you read a news media article acknowledging our voluntary troops accomplishments?
These people are volunteering and in some cases dying to protect the country they love. How does one compare the role of the lib congressperson?
Hitler was America's recognized enemy as was Japan. Why are the terrorist nations now not only to be recognized as equals, but dealt with through peaceful talks?
Who loves their country more, those defending it with their lives or those who desire to pull-out and exercise talks?
Today's generation does not understand what it is to honor our military, they are taught to disdain it.
This same generation is taught the failings of America rather than our overwhelming achievements thus they must learn as individuals.
Conservatives believe in a positive future, liberals continue to sink into the past. Hating one's country will never lead to a party opportunity, conservatives must adjust and demonstrate their true feelings rather than compromise.
Loving one's country is a wonderful thing.

If you mention ANWR it means you don't care about the environment but when congress says ANWR it means you don't care about the gasoline prices
