Olbermann Smears Iraq Vet, McCain as Racists

On his April 8 "Countdown," host Keith Olbermann smeared Iraq war veteran David Bellavia as a racist:

OLBERMANN, from the April 8 "Countdown" opening credits: Nothing obscure about this: Racism as a Republican campaign plank. Sen. McCain introduced at a rally on Capitol Hill."

BELLAVIA, introducing then hugging McCain: You can have your Tiger Woods. We've got Sen. McCain.

OLBERMANN: Did he actually just say that? And why did McCain then embrace him?

Bellavia is running as a Republican for Congress in upstate New York and is pitted against another Iraq veteran, Democratic nominee Jon Powers, in that contest. Olbermann turned to liberal professor Michael Eric Dyson to sanction Olbermann's specious charge that the McCain campaign is racist:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

OLBERMANN: When you hear something said like that, is intent impossible to calculate? And does it even matter? Is the idea behind the remarks the same regardless of the intent?

DYSON: Well, my pastor used to say, look, a mosquito's intent is only to get blood from you, but the consequence, it could give you malaria. So at that level, the intent will never exhaust the consequence. The consequence here is huge. Now, we can't discern the person's intent, it may have been fine, but that's even more problematic. If there was no specific and particular and conscious intent to do harm, that means that this grows out of a pattern of habit. That it's just a natural reflex, and that one, you know, interchangeable African-American multi-racial person is as good as the other, or they're indistinguishable...

In other words, forget intent and context. If it's thoughtless it betrays a "pattern of habit" or "natural reflex." I guess that's just like Olbermann associating a black athlete with a dish popular in soul food restaurants or associating Gov. Bill Richardson with guacamole.

Thanks Cool, I knew it came

Thanks Cool, I knew it came from Gibson, and that it had to do with him not getting out of the bathtub, but that's the first time I heard about all his whining about the really important stories he wanted to do instead.

I guess that's why, now that he is running MSNBC, he does all those important stories like Darfur and global warming and world peace, instead of worrying all the time about what the President is doing...

<sarc off>

Got it...

Cool!

Thanks...so the name for Olbermann was generated from John Gibson.

Olbermann

Why does anybody bother to listen to this guy? (Oh I forgot he has no ratings). He is a total inept Ahole. He couldn't make it in sports and since MSNBC is an irrelevant cable network I guess the two are perferct for each other. The man and the station are losers.

Olbermann calling people racist?

Olbermann calling people racist? Can you spell hypocrite? Unless I'm mistaken, this is the same guy who once called a black football player "chicken and waffles," and also made a joke about Bill Clinton telling former Dem Governor Bill Richardson, "pass the guacamole," and also once intentionally mispronounced Michelle Malkin's maiden name during his "Worst Person in the World," segment. And why did he have Michael Eric Dyson on his show to talk about that in the first place? Dyson's one of the biggest racists there is.

I Just Checked Democrat Underground

Believe it or not, the Dummies have at least 20 PAGES of threads worshiping Keef and his show. I found an entire thread dedicated to

"A song to commemorate tonight's Countdown"

and other threads like these:

"We all owe Keith a debt of thanks"

"Vote for your favorite Countdown moment..."

and so on. Many of these threads only get 1 or 2 posts, of course, but what is chilling is that many others get hundreds of posts.

As far as I am concerned

As far as I am concerned this drivel coming from the likes of Dyson is absolutely ridiculous....he is racist as far as I am concerned, I have listened to him for years, I also turn the television when I see his face, I cannot bear to listen to his quick talking blather, same as Tavis Smiley...and Olbie, come on, this is all an agenda and we know it...they are in the bag for Obama who is a black nationalist as far a I am concerned, along with his wife and their choice of a hatepreaching, possibly muslim pastor and Church and we are supposed to believe this guy running is a racist by using Tiger Woods name....and attempting to turn this on McCain somehow...

LMAO...Give me a break...

And don't forget what

And don't forget what happened to Fuzzy Zoeller when he hinted that blacks like fried chicken. He lost his endorsement contracts and pretty much his livelihood, even after apologizing.  He was banished to the outer darkness and never heard from again!

He's Still Around

Fuzzy personally apologized to Tiger Woods, who accepted his apology; Tiger said at the time "I'm sure Fuz didn't mean anything derogatory; as a matter of fact, I thought it was funny."

Fuz has been on the Senior tour for 6 years and has won two majors on that tour.

But losing his Kmart endorsement must've been a little painful.

Tiger has class and a sense of humor

The Zoeller incident and the Golf Channel "lynching" incident, where a sportscaster made an off the cuff reference to lynching and was suspended, have demonstrated that Mr. Woods has at least two attributes lacking in Olbermutt:  Class and a sense of humor.  Woods understands that people sometimes say stupid things without meaning any harm, and knows enough to forgive and forget.

The word "racism" has been stretched so thin it's nearly meaningless now.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

He's much like Michael Jordan was in basketball

Only with golf, Tiger will no doubt have a much longer career. He's so far above the field it's amazing because he's likely to win even on an average day for him. What gets me is that commercial, where he repeatedly bounces the ball off a club and then whacks the living hell out of it at the end. I suppose others can do that too, but I'd never seen it done until I saw the commercial. Wow...

You mean this Tiger Woods commercial?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK_b6eYCAOo

The truly astounding thing is that he was just doing tricks like this to amuse the crew while he was shooting a different Nike commercial; the director saw it and set up a camera to catch the action, and it wound up being used in a commercial of its own.

He did what you see here in two takes. Two.

Re the Golf Channel

Re the Golf Channel "lynching" incident: why weren't all those liberals upset during the SCOTUS hearings when Clarence Thomas said that his treatment by Democrats was a "high-tech lynching"?

I guess if a black conservative claims he's being figuratively "lynched" by a put-up scandal, (and I'm sure Thomas knew exactly what he was doing when he used that specific term!) the libs ignore the accusation. but if a white person makes a non-racial joke about lynching a guy (who happens to be black) to keep him off the golf course, it's "Katie bar the door!!"

Kelly [I can't think of her

Kelly [I can't think of her last name]'s "lynching" quip resulting in her suspension was another case of "political correctness" run amok.

But I don't follow your Thomas example.  Are you saying that liberals are supposed to be upset at other liberals merely because they are accused by a black conservative of a "high-tech lynching"?

Jer

Del, I mentioned that,

Del, I mentioned that, (probably in the other thread on this incident), that Woods graciously accepted Fuzzy's apology, but even that wasn't enough for the PC police (they knew better, you see) and they insisted on destroying Zoeller's career. He lost a lot of money on endorsements, including a big one with K Mart.

I'm glad he's back.

obama and dyson paraphrasing pastors

OBAMA; Well, my pastor used to say something about Chickens and Roosting, but you know, that wasn't anything controversial or anything and was taken totally out of context.  Next...

As if on cue

Not more than an hour ago, I posted a remark on the thread about the smear against McCain being given such short shrift. On that posting, I said that when the media blows off smears against Republicans, but goes ballistic over the slightest (or imagined) remarks against democrats, they lose all credibility.

I went back to work, and came back to glance at any new stories. Sure enough, the first thing I saw was this story. It's a story where the media is outraged, and of course, an "expert" on racial outrage is nearby to interview on the horrible things this reveals about Republicans.

Nah. Let's be clear. Because of the ridiculously biased coverage here, I don't care. Unless Olbermann did a similar story that charged that Jay Rockefeller's comments proved a deep hatred of the military among all Democrats, then Olbermann has absolutely no right to speak about any comments from anyone.

By the way, I thought the Tiger Woods remark was simply stupid. But if this momentary remark "reveals" anything, then let's see the meaning of Rockefeller's idiocy given the same "analysis."

Well, KC, I don't know about

Well, KC, I don't know about ALL democrats, but I would say that Rockefeller's remark reveals what he thinks of America's military: that they are unfeeling murderers who do their damage and go off without a second thought about the innocent people that they kill.

Exactly

Truth is, I didn't take Rockefeller's remark to say anything about Democrats as a whole. This was simply Rockefeller using political rhetoric in a descent to his private gutter. This Tiger Woods remark may reveal the political gutter of the guy who introduced McCain, but it says nothing about McCain or the rest of the GOP.

My attitude is that I don't want to play that game. But if you're going to play it, we're going to make you play it fairly. If one remark "says" anything about one side, then a similar remark "says" something about the other side.

We'd all be better off if we didn't leap to these idiotic conclusions, but I guess 24-hour cable news shows have a lot of time to fill.

What's Olbermanic's intent if not to smear McCain?

This constant insinuation of racism among Republicans and/or Conservatives is part of what keeps us from solving this issue.

THAT is way more harmful than any tiny hint of racial insensitivity these twits can glean from a perfectly innocuous remark!

Since I get physically ill

Since I get physically ill each time I see Numb-Nuts, Keith O, I didn't see this. My understanding of this is

My understanding of this is that early that morning Jimmy Hoffa, Jr., an Obama supporter, responded to a question over whether white union workers in Pennsylvania would support a black candidate like Obama by saying that Obama is "like Tiger Woods". That is, he transcends race.

Bellavia's comment was a play on that comparison. I.e., "You can have Tiger Woods (Obama), I'll take McCain."

In any event, for the fraud Olbermann to claim that this is "racism as a Republican campaign plank" (a campaign plank?) is simply another in the long list of smears and libels that this thug puts out daily.

This time, he's much more insulting. What makes me want to throw up is that he has the nerve to say "Good Night and Good Luck" like Edward R. Murrow used to do. Tiger Woods context

Finally, some context. Thanks SMG.

Washington Times story on

Washington Times story on Hoffa comparing Obama to Woods:  http://video1.washingtontimes.com/fishwrap/2008/04/jimmy_hoffa_on_obama_hes_like.html.

Blog with full speech by Bellavia and a third person that has compared Obama to Woods recently:  http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2008/04/whats_with_the.html.

Unless more knowledge of Bellavia is published, there is no way to know that the "intent" of his words was racist in nature.  From what I could glean from Google, Bellavia is a bonafide war hero who is promoting better support of current and veteran members of the military (http://www.senate.state.ny.us/sws/vethallfame/bellavia.html).

We do, however, have ample data that Michael Eric Dyson is a Cornel West-Lite, a mini-me Pastor Wright, and an avoider of the whole truth in favor of socialist-tinged, not my fault school of thinking:  http://www.democracynow.org/2005/10/14/professor_preacher_michael_eric_dyson_on.  He's even written a book "deconstructing" Bill Cosby's ideology of and solutions for the plight of black people.  Making an esoteric comparison of Cosby to Ronald Reagan as both compliment and underhanded insult, Dyson displays he not above the race-baiting manipulations of Jackson and Sharpton.

RRAM Tough!

He wasn't comparing Obama to Tiger Woods.

He was comparing sports heroes like Tiger Woods, to ACTUAL heroes like our military veterans, like John McCain. What he said was "you can have your Tiger Woods (sports heroes), we'll take John McCain (a real war hero)".

There was nothing racial about this whatsoever.

Buying in again to the idea that all African Americans are ethnic first and whatever else second?

Why must you be so ready to believe this is a racist comment?

Is it therefore sexist if I say "you can have your Hillary Clinton, we've got John McCain?

Sounds pretty racist to me.

Okay, what was "racist" about it?

Bellavia was referring to Hoffa's comment that Obama was Tiger Woods. So, Bellavia was simply saying, "You can have Tiger (Obama), I'll take McCain." Nothing racist in any way about it.

Context is everything here.

I'm not surprised that a hack like Olbermann - who gets his material from leftwing blogs - would not get this.

Leon feels it incumbent upon himself to defend the poor downtrodden defenseless among us.

That Tiger Woods is more than capable of understanding the comment and its context is extraeneous to Leon's inner need to condescendingly and vociferously display his outrage.

For context see the SMG comment above. Ken should probably have included the information in the article because it was making no sense to me either. If the information above is correct the comment is NOT racial.

We need to see what the Oberdude left (pardon my pun) out. There is a longer video on YouTube although it only provides slightly more context. Looks like a hero comparison.

For further explanation of

For further explanation of this (without this background, it's very confusing), go to Hot Air.  It's not entirely clear whether Bellavia was referencing the Hoffa statement or not.

After looking at the clip again, it's clear to me that Bellavia was simply stating that while Tiger Woods is a sports hero, that he (Bellavia) would still take a real hero like McCain over him.

Nothing more than that. The poster above has it right.

Geez, much ado about nothing.

SM, don't waste your time.

SM, don't waste your time. Leon is not interested in any explanation that shows the guy is not a racist. As you know, Leon just loves to make "innocent" sounding remarks like "Sounds pretty racist to me"....a passive-aggressive challenge to someone to prove otherwise.

I don't even understand the

I don't even understand the comment. "You can have your Tiger Woods"? What..? I don't think it's racist. It's clumsy, but not racist.

It's "clumsy" if said by a

It's "clumsy" if said by a liberal; if said by a conservative, it's racist.

Look at what happened to Trent Lott.

However, Sen. Chris Dodd said that former Klansman Robert Byrd would have been a great leader in any era of American history (I believe that includes the Civil War and its aftermath)....to the sound of crickets chirping....

Racist Thoughts

It's only "racist" if you concentrate ONLY on Tiger Wood's skin color and not on his golfing accomplishments. To me, and to most other people, Tiger Woods is a golfing phenomenon and not a black man swinging a club. The Tiger Woods analogy with McCain is about the accomplishments of each, not skin color.

Tell me, Leon, what aspect do YOU concentrating on, skin color or accomplishment? If you only concentrate on someone's skin color, that makes YOU the raciest.

<sigh>........I believe

<sigh>........I believe this was a lamo attempt at trying to compare McCain (politic's) to a superstar who dominate's in his proffesion, Tiger Wood's (golf), no more, no less. It was actually a compliment. Unfortunately as we all know, with liberal's, it's racism, racism everywhere 25-8, 8 day's a week. It takes a dyed in the wool racist to be able to spot racism everywhere

Maybe Keith could have actually asked Tiger Wood's what his thought's were on this,......better yet what his politic's are. Tiger Wood's doesn't strike as a very political guy, let alone a liberal. It would be nice if Keith for once used fact's and logic the next time he tries to light another Reichstag fire with a wet match and spew his leftist diarreah against the backsides of everyones television screen's......., but we know that wont' happen.

Shove some Immodium AD up yer' butt Keith, the crap's comin' out the wrong hole.

Maybe Keith could have actually asked Tiger Wood's what his thought's were on this,

It wouldn't matter. Tiger would probably be gracious about it, as he was with Fuzzy Zoeller. He graciously accepted his apology. But that didn't matter to the PC police. They didn't care what Woods thought about it; nothing but complete destruction of Zoeller's career would satisfy them.

 Olberman isn't worth the

Olberman isn't worth the shit on the bottom a of GI's boots.

Whitey Olbermann is the RACIST

Omigod -- what an insult.

A McCain support erroneously compares a relatively inexpeienced, vacuus politician to the most famous and successful sportsman on the planet.

Tiger Woods should be insulted indeed.

Maximizing his own God given talent in the sporting arena, Tiger controls and manages his own huge empire and brand. The guy could stop playing tomorrow and lives like an Emperor till he dies

The funny thing is, hasn't the mixed race Tiger mentioned more than once that he doesn't even consider himself black and his pride in his Asian heritage?

when he was asked if it bothered him to be called an African-American. "It does," he said. "Growing up, I came up with this name: I'm a 'Cablinasian.'"

I guess Olbermann doesn't care what person thinks of himself. He, the WHITE MAN, decides what Tiger Woods should be.

I guess that makes Keith Olbermann a RACIST.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

In a nutshell. Any and I

In a nutshell. Any and I mean any criticism, no matter how reasoned, how slight, how good, how bad etc. of Obama will be considered racism. There will be nothing anyone can say who is in opposition to this guy that wont be labeled "racist". All criticism of him will have to fight the "racist" tag. McCain is white, is opposing Obama for the presidency so ipso facto he is a racist. Makes sense to me.

Um, did it occur to the

Um, did it occur to the former Sportscenter host that this is Masters week?????

What?

I don't get it. Why did Bellavia compare Obama to Tiger Woods? Is that even what he is saying?

BELLAVIA was on Glenn Beck's radio show

This is the transcript (I find anyone who called this guy a racist to be repugnant):

GLENN:  So David, I want to start with you because there's been some controversy and I didn't bring it up on the show last night because honestly I didn't realize how out of control this thing is getting and when I found out what's really happening, it was already too late for the TV show and I said, you know what, I'll put you on radio because this is such an unbelievably horrific thing to do to somebody like you or to do to anybody, but it is the perfect example of what we've been talking about on this program about how people will use anything for power and to get elected.  Tell me the story of what happened when you were down in Washington along with the Vets For Freedom and you introduced John McCain.

BELLAVIA:  Well, what it was, I was with the organization Vets for Freedom.  Recently, about two weeks ago my congressman in the 26th district of New York decided not to run.  I threw my name in the race.  So I will announce my candidacy for congress.  As soon as that happened with my war pedigree, I just, I knew that I was in the target and on the radar.  I introduced John McCain at this rally and what I basically said was, was that I was making a comparison of heroes, that all ages and races can look up to, referring to Senator McCain as more -- someone that, you know, should be on a pedestal for my two little boys to look up to, someone like Marcus Luttrell, Michael Mansoor.  These are American heroes, compared to professional athletes or entertainers.  I looked in the audience.  I saw a guy with a Callaway golf hat on and I automatically thought of the most famous golfer who is Tiger Woods and I said, you can have your Tiger Woods as your heroes.  We have men like Senator McCain.  That's who my boys will look up to.

GLENN:  Okay.  And what it's been turned into by, what a surprise, the ultra left NBC, what they have turned this into is we have a white guy; you have the black guy.  Right?

BELLAVIA:  Exactly.  And just the fact -- just not going to play that game.  The first response was, you know --

[Phone connection goes down for a few seconds]

GLENN:  Are you there?  Oh, boy.  Belle sorry about that.  Are you there?

GLENN:  Yeah.

BELLAVIA:  Yeah, the first response --

GLENN:  Dick Cheney, if you're on the phone, hang up the phone!  Stop listening.

BELLAVIA:  I must have set off a keyword.  The first response I thought was ridiculous and then it just got more and more absurd with these bloggers getting my personal information out there calling me a bigot.  In my world, I have an 8-year-old and a 1-year-old and I'm raising these kids to know that a man who sacrifices.  You know, Marcus Luttrell could right now be in a ranch somewhere.  He could be in Texas, he could be going to medical school.  He chose to serve his country and he sacrificed for his country.  So you know what?  I want a baseball card on Marcus Luttrell.  I want my kids to know what he went through and why he is important and how they should guide their life after him.  And I'm sorry, but, you know, Brangelina and Britney Spears are not important.  They are not important people and I made the mistake of mentioning African-American to people who are morally and ethically bankrupt and they turned this whole thing around to race.

GLENN:  David, have they really, they've actually targeted your children, your family?

BELLAVIA:  Yes, sir.  They have been not only the e-mails that come pouring in but someone leaked, you know, phone numbers and everything else and locations of where people attend school and how they want to educate my kids and save them from their bigoted father.  It's just absolutely ridiculous.  But you know what?  I can deal with that.  I can deal with that.  I'm a big boy.  I've known what it's like to fight.  I can handle that.  What annoys me, though, is the fact that I've got to go on a Glenn Beck program and defend.  We are fighting as Americans.  We're bleeding next to African-Americans.  I fought with Muslim Americans, Glenn, in Iraq.  This was never about religion or ethnicity.  It's about Americans defending our culture and our way of life and I am proud to say that our legacy, we are the greatest humanitarian organizations ever lived in the United States military and we have nothing to apologize for and I'm not going to apologize for saying that Tiger Woods -- I don't think it was the Masters, by the way, but you know what?  He's a golfer!  He's a golfer!  He's a golf ball.

GLENN:  We've made this point on the program over and over and over again.

BELLAVIA:  And by the way, Tiger Woods' father was a hero.  Tiger Woods' father was an American hero that I want my kids to look up to.  But Tiger Woods, until he puts -- gets a bad haircut and throws a rug sack and starts to shoot bad guys like your in-studio guest there --

GLENN:  Notice you're playing yourself down because you've done nothing.

BELLAVIA:  Well, no, what I'm getting at is, you know, look the reality of the matter is that we have so many people that have stories.  I mean, some of the stories are fantastic but the reality is, Glenn, we've had two female silver star recipients for the first time since World War II.  There are people on the left that go, what are women doing in the war.  They are taking down bad guys is what they're doing.  Why are we debating gays in the military and women in the military when the reality is they want to kill us in an equal opportunity manner.  I just don't get it.
