LA Times #1 in Declining Circulation...

...in the absolute number of subscriptions dropped over four years that is. The San Francisco Chronicle was actually worse in circulation hemorrhage in percentage terms.

All the same it's not exactly the accolade you want hanging on your wall if you're the publisher of the Times. From Editor & Publisher (h/t Patterico):

While the industry has lost about 10% of circulation overall in the past four years among the leading papers, some have bled much more than others during the same period, according to an E&P analysis of data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The Los Angles Times lost 20% of daily circulation or more than 200,000 copies over the past four years, for example, while up the coast the San Francisco Chronicle's daily circulation dropped almost 30%.

What you may not realize

I live in Dallas (in one of the reddest states in the country) and can tell you that I stopped reading the local paper (Dallas Morning News) years ago.  The reason?  The 2nd local paper (Dallas Times Herald) which was the 'left' paper folded and slowly but surely the former Herald employees moved into and took over the Morning News.

A few years later it became apparent that the Dallas Morning News was the one that disappeared and the Times Herald remained open (just with a different name on it).

It's not just the LA Times losing subscribers.  As the article said, the industry is down 10% (and likely more).  And for every liberal paper that folds, those journalists have to go SOMEWHERE.

So beware of stories like this-those reporters who lose their jobs are not going to change their political opinions when they go elsewehere.  They will just infect another newspaper and continue the cycle.

Readers Move North

Unfortunately, all the Leftists who used to subscribe to the San Fran and LA papers have now moved up here, to Seattle.

Amazing how the New York

Amazing how the New York Post and WSJ lost the least along with USA Today.  I wonder why the Washington Times wasn't listed? I guess their circulation is under 300k.

Haha - the race baiting Atlanta Journal-Constitution lost 16.8%, serves you right for bad mouthing Judge Janice Rodgers Brown.

I don't take this as good

I don't take this as good news for two reasons:

One, newspapers serve as a valuable source of news and commentary.  Newspapers slowly, but surely going away is bad news.  An informed electorate is a forearmed electorate.

Secondly, without doubt, the owners and managers of these newspapers will not in any way admit that it is the far left content and commentary that is causing the reduction in readership.

By the way, one of the best newspapers in the land is Investor's Business Daily.  You can read their commentary and political cartoons here:  http://www.ibdeditorials.com/default.aspx?src=ICOMEDT .

I would accept this

With the following insertions:

One, honest and unbiased newspapers serve as a valuable source of news and commentary.
Dishonest and biased newspapers slowly, but surely going away is NOT bad news. An informed
electorate is a forearmed electorate.

Secondly, without doubt, the owners and managers of these newspapers
will not in any way admit that it is the far left content and
commentary that is causing the reduction in readership because to do so would exclude them from parties and the dwindling power that they lust for, but do nothing to deserve.

As for the rest? Meh! I'll continue to read a wide variety of news on the internet. There is no "publication" that I would trust any further than I could comfortably spit a dead rat.

Emphasis on "comfortably".

Pacific Business News, a paper in my area is up 10%

Then problem with the left is that they do not think they are left. I'd like to hear what all the excuses are on the falling circulation numbers, in a nut shell: it's the internet, no fairness doctrine .. Never ever their left bent view!

Iranian uranium; Iranian ICBM's; Iranian satellites..CHANGE is comming BELIEVE in that!

If you have been to Los

If you have been to Los Angeles recently then you will understand that the L.A. Times is losing readership because the entire city has become a large cesspool of non-English speaking illegal aliens.  They won't buy what they can't read.

Maybe if they switched to Spanish and got the LA taxpayers to subsidize the cost to the readership...

If L.A. is run by the

If L.A. is run by the usual suspects (corrupt, Democratic Machine big-city liberals), then some enterprising city council member is probably working on that proposal right now.

The L.A. times thanks you! ....hey guys, break out the Dos Equis!......

Believe me, if the LA Times

Believe me, if the LA Times didn't have a competent, if highly overrated Sports Section (and perhaps Calendar section), its circulation wouldn't even be this good.  Their "news" writers are simply mouthpieces for Antonio Villaraigosa, Fabian Nunez, Lee Baca, William Bratton and a bunch of other school board socialists who have been running the area into the ground for years.  The paper took a sledgehammer to its already suspect credibility and shaky circulation when it ran a bunch of dishonest polls that suggested Gray Davis was closing in the Recall Election a few years ago.  They also ran a bunch of specious bimbo eruption rumors in an attempt to derail the Schwarzenegger bid.  But now that Schwarzenegger has shown himself to be a true do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do socialist, the Times coverage of the Taxinator has been amazingly positive.  Fancy that.  Their columnists, including Steve Lopez, George Skelton and Michael Hitzlik are abysmal writers who spew ignorant and dishonest garbage regularly.  The LA Times isn't so much a newspaper as it is a waste of pulp and ink.

Surprised

I'm very surprised its not the NY Slimes in the #1 position
