NewsBusters.org | MRC.org | photo via Seattle P-ISaying that he's "breaking our hearts," Seattle Post-Intelligencer "Big Blog" breaking news editor Candace Heckman is chagrined about the probable demise of Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.). Yet while Heckman praised Spitzer as an intrepid friend of Everyman, the populist defender of the masses against powerful Big Business.

Not once did Heckman note Spitzer's party affiliation in her March 11 post (emphasis mine)

Say it ain't so, Eliot! Governor, you're breaking our hearts.

He was once known as the Sheriff of Wall Street, an investigator unafraid of attacking even the most powerful of corrupt institutions and people. He joined Microsoft in taking on spammers, and started criticizing mortgage-lending practices long before the market's recent problems. I mean, if there was a guy to stand behind, it was he.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a hero to consumer crusaders across the nation, is today the laughing stock for standup comics and barroom hecklers from Flatbush Avenue to Glenoaks Boulevard.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Spitzer is now known as "Client 9," as he is one of several implicated in a prostitution ring that linked high-end call girls to wealthy johns.

[...]

And now, the formerly feared New York Attorney General is being asked to step down as governor by three of the largest populist New York newspapers, the New York Post, New York Daily News and Newsday (of Long Island). The GOP is also seeking the governor's impeachment.

The press has been all over every aspect of this story. There's even a wire story with the headline, "Clinton declines comment on Spitzer." Even fairweather news readers of short-term memory might think that was satirically referencing Bill. But, no, they mean Hillary.

If he's a HERO

Then he's a Vulcan (say fast with accent) Hero

If he's a Hero, give him a Medal.

If he's a Hero, he didn't save anyone from Destruction, even himself.

Candace...your so-called

Candace...your so-called hero is a hypocrite and hopefully will be behind bars with time, doing time...for the same thing he has other people behind bars for.

He is a bully...filled with arrogance and power, power that corrupted him, from a wealthy family to-boot.

He is a DEMOCRAT Candace...try printing that, it is getting old with the obstruction of the msm of all venues omitting this fact.

Sounds like he has 48 hours before impeachment starts on him by the big ol' bad republicans if he doesn't step down, me thinks there will be dems joining in with the repubs on this too.

Save your phony misplaced hypocritical pity...start crying a river...buy some kleenex.

More than Arrogance

I don't think this scandal is really about visiting prostitutes. I don't think it is strictly about arrogance.  Rather it is a means to an end. Spitzer, early in his Administration used the New York State Police to gather information on the State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno.

A case that he violated the Mann act is much cleaner and contained than trying to bring a Federal prosecution on abuse of power.

Now Candace remember the First Commandment.  You had a false god dear.

Reality here is this guy,

Reality here is this guy, tyrant that he is, is guilty of no more than being a John in this matter.   The uisual penalty in my area for soliciting prostitution is a $100 fine, the Judge tells you what a bad oy you have been, and your name gets printed in the paper as a 'John'.  If you are married, your wife finds out if she didn't already know.

Nothing should happen to Spitzer outside of this for soliciting prostitution.

Now .... the abuse of power thing, that is another matter altogether.  Abusers of the public trust like that need a stretch in the slammer.

Arrogance of power

This man is the type of person who feels the law is for everyone else, not him.  Serves him right, the sanctimonious jerk.  "Friend of everyman, populist defender?"  Of who, hookers?  Mr. I'm going after prostitution and brothels. Turns out to be their best customer.  Hypocrisy to the highest degree.  I truely feel sorry for this mans wife.  He should be publicly shunned.

"If a man does his best, what else is there"?

General George S. Patton Jr.

It's a (non) two-fer!

Not only doesn't she mention Spitzer's party affiliation, she doesn't mention what most stories point out about him: he was hell-on-wheels busting up prostitution rings!

Talk about denial!

Guess the irony was too much for her!      ;^D

Spitzer promised

Didn't Spitzer promised to Bring the Albany Prostitution rings and Brothels to their knees, one Girl at a Time ?

Ba..da.boom....

Spitzer also promised to

Spitzer also promised to bring jobs to NY if elected Governor. People had no idea that those jobs would be limited to the sex industry.

"Abstain from McCain"

I understand some of those jobs

I understand that some of those jobs were Foreign Jobs . . . from Europe ?

Detroit Mayor

'Our' mayor in Detroit took this to a whole new level. Comiting purgury to cover up the fact he fired the officers investigating his corruption and affair(s), then costing the city 9 million to pay off the officers he fired.

He has yet to be held accountable (I'm not holding my breath).

I think it's fair to

I think it's fair to "lament" when someone who's stood for law & order turns out to be involved in shady dealings. That's a natural reaction.

So, bal, did you "lament"

So, bal, did you "lament" Mark Foley? Do you "lament" Larry Craig? I would classify Congressmen as "law" officials. Or how about Richard Nixon? The nation's top "law-enforcement official" was supposedly "involved in shady dealings." Any "lament" spared there?

I know, I'm a pain!     ;^D

<edit> btw, I would say "supposedly stood for law & order" in your post above. Maybe that's what we should lament, that he apparently snookered those he was supposed to represent.

Nope. As for Nixon, I was

Nope. As for Nixon, I was under 10 years old, so...I was lamenting Wile E. Coyote.

And I meant in general, if one looked up to Spitzer and his crime-bustin' ways, then it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to lament his indiscretion.

Howard's amateur psychoanalysis reaction was interesting...

Stern said this could be traced back to the Dad, in the end. His Dad has been the money behind Elliot's political career the whole time, as a sort of Joe Kennedy type. Elliot may not have even particularly wanted a political career. What Dad wanted was the only success beyond wealth (he had plenty of that) which is power, via his son's career.

Specifically, Elliot's Dad wanted his kid to eventually become the first Jewish President of the United States. There's nothing wrong with a Dad wanting something like that for his kid, of course. It's just that unless the kid wants it too, issues can arise such as risk-taking behavior with things like substances or sex. In this case, it was sex. I don't know if Howard is right, but he knows NY politics & people and sure it sounded logical from here.

A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.

Balboa, As always

Balboa,

As always defending what can’t be defended.  PLEASE BALBOA!  This despicable man never stood for the law.  He used the law to intimidate others, to get others to do  his bidding!

Why, for example, would he harass, New York City women centers that were helping young pregnant women have their babies?  He sent out subpoenas to countless pro-life centers which counseled and helped pregnant women to have their babies.  You know why he did this?  Because NOW, NARAL, etc gave him money for his election and demanded pay back.  Do tell how this is standing for the law.  Did the subpoenas go anywhere?  of course not.  He dropped it after he forced pro-life groups to use their money and energy in stoping Spitzer, but the message got accross.  Get out of the way of Spitzer and his special interests groups or you are toast.  Is this what youc all standing for the law?  No wonder you Democrats are so twisted.

He went after Wall Street the same way.  He threatened to indict the CEO of AIG and what happened, the CEO of AIG was asked to resign.  Was the indictment carried out?  Of course not, Sptizer used it to damage the AIG CEO.  Once again, how is this a man that stand for the law?   and he did this to quite a few individuals.

Also, the obvious one Balboa, how does a man that supposedly stands for the law….1) Does everything he can not to get caught by the law-sets up to sleep with the prostitute by using cash, etc.  and 2)Sleeps with a prostitute.  Once again, how does this show that this is a man that stood for the law?

Wow!  The only thing Spitzer stood up for was Spitzer and Spitzer.

Get a clue!

Um...what?

Um...what?

Well Balboa, as always, stumped by your lack of education of those that you defend.  when you have nothing to say anymore to defend idiots like Spitzer, Um...what? is the best response.

It's the best response for

It's the best response for your total lack of comprehension and veering, wildly off-target, presumptive posts.

No, it is the best response that you can give when you can't defend statements like the above.  You claimed here that Spitzer stood for law and order......

care to explain how and when given his current and past behavior.

I didn't know that it was presumptive of me to go after you for claiming that this womanizer, this user of women, this hypocrite, this invidual who used the law to intimidate others was a person that stood for the law & order.

or did you never say this?

will you now defend your own statement, deny what you typed?  c'mon Balboa, I know you love to defend that which can't be defended, but even this is pathetic behavior for you.

What would be the point?

What would be the point? You'd misinterpret any response as my tacit approval of Stalin's plumbing policies and condemn me for the blatant disregard for the plight of myopic mosquitoes or some other gobbledy-gook.

Balboa, so, you are denying the above statement?  are you not saying that "It is fair to "lament" when someone who stood for law & order turns out to be involved in shady dealings."

with this one statement you are implying that Spitzer was a man that stood by the law.  Or not?

You can't defend your statment so you go off on a rant that has nothing to do with this thread.

To claim that Spitzer is/was a law abiding citizen, who stood for law and order is like saying Hilter loved Jews.  Yes, both pathetic statements.

What does a $4,300 call

What does a $4,300 call girl do that a $1000 call girl doesn't???

He could have saved himself a whole lot of money. (Just saying.)

I have always

I have always wondered.....

why is it that Liberals, who claim to be for women's rights, who claim to stand for women's equality, who claim to be the champions for women causes, who claim that women need to be respected and not looked on as only objects for men to use....love standing by and defending animals like Spitzer, like Clinton, etc.

It makes no sense that a true feminist would ever vote for anyone that is like Clinton, Spitzer, etc.  Yet, these self-proclaimed feminists and those that claim to support feminists are the first ones to stand on a soap box and defend the behavior of Democratc/Liberal leaders that degrade women.

Maybe Balboa, the champion of all things that can't be defended can defend Liberal feminists and their complete and utter support of womanizers like Clinton and Spitzer....what do you say Balboa?

I mean does anyone remember how the feminists went after every single woman that dare say and prove that Clinton had used her?  Does anyone remember this?

  Liberals, what great hypocrites.

Spitzer shold go silently into the night

Spitzer shold go silently into the night BUT he is a sactimonious democrat who like Clinton's hubby shoves it off as "personal"

He will most likely receive medals from the democrat party and go on to make bucks on speaking tours giving motivational speeches just like other popular dems before him.

He is hiring call girls over six years so there goes the oops factor never mind the class factor.

He will fight to stay as Gov. of New York because hillary needs her #1 super delegate. (she won't dis him)

Get with it - HE VIOLATED the public trust and that should be first article of impeachment. The NY legislature should get the show on the road and impeach the sanctimonious SOB  ASAP!

He's a....Republican!

EvilCon555

Gov Spitzer is ultimately everything the Dems hate in a Republican.  Inherited money, power mad, ugly but apparently sexually satisfied, criminally motivated, powerful, white, male, holier than thou, sanctimonious, Ivy League educated, driven...gee the only thing missing is born again - and mark my words he will be finding God soon enough of he thinks it'll get him out of this mess.

Here's the word of the day kids. HYPOCRITE. And it better defines MOST Democrats than Repubicans these days. The only thing this guy has going for him is a blind black Lt Govenor. He must've seen this coming....

As for the wife standing by her man....she's a chump. If she had kicked him out at the very moment she knew (try 5 years and 11 months ago) she would have maintained her integrity. Right now she is NO better than he. God bless those poor children - girls whose dad solicits high priced call girls - that is a freakin shame....and somehow abusive.

For REAL Change

Ugly guys have to pay more ?

Spitzer is Ugly ?

At least for NB'ers, it's brought some new commenters out of the woods front and center. . . ex. - Delsa

IF you watch any TV nowadays, this particular "Scandal" is fodder for a new MSM TV series, certainly it's not that shocking compared to Miami CSI, or the latest mass murderer show with some guy coming back from the Dead ad nauseum.

The MSM coverage will follow a Scripted MSM plot line for the NEXT 6 Weeks !!  We're gonna get tired of "coverage" soon enough.

»→ Maybe Jay Tee

He coulda gotten a discount if he'd told the prostitute he was Bill Cowher

♣ a seal

...ex. Delsa???

Not sure I catch your drift? I did not think of myself as being in the "woods".

ie: You did not reference anything I said therefore I did not get it?

And who ever thinks Spitzer is a Republican is NUTS!

He is one of HILLARY's SUPER DELEGATES!

"Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a hero

"Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a hero to consumer crusaders across the nation..."

Allow me to translate this line from liberal Spinish to plain English...

"Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a corrupt, job-killing shyster pimp thug, hero to no one other than other sleazy, thieving trial lawyers with loose morals..."

You hit he nail on the head

Again you are profound in your summation.

spitzer is a bully of the first order. He got as good as he gives.

Forget the poor wife. Now she knows what all the gifts over the last six years, were for. We call it "jewish guilt".

She will make him pay forever now. I have no sorrow for him at all.

Narcissism

The Left has no concern for anything other than their agenda. They embarrass themselves more each day, and their hyprocricy in covering Spitzer versus any republican who is on the hook is breathtaking. The MSM's influence is devastating, as millions of voters are being hoodwinked into destroying this country.
