Update (16:50 EDT): Clay Waters of MRC's TimesWatch informs me the 3rd paragraph reference in a NYT article to Spitzer's Democratic Party affiliation has been removed. Only an oblique reference to his party remains in the 15th paragraph, notes Waters.
It's the first major political sex scandal of 2008 (aside from Detroit's Kwame Kilpatrick) and it involves a Democrat. So of course the Associated Press failed to note Gov. Eliot Spitzer's (D-NY) party affiliation. Via the LATimes.com Web site, published at 2:28 p.m. EDT:
The New York Times is reporting that Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring.
On its Web site, the newspaper cites an anonymous administration official as the source and says Spitzer was meeting with his top aides.
Spitzer officials wouldn't immediately comment on the story to The Associated Press. An announcement was scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at his Manhattan office.
The New York Times has more here, and that paper notes Spitzer's party affiliation in the third graf:
Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.
Update (14:54 EDT): A review of the Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN Web sites shows only Fox noting Spitzer's Democratic party affiliation in teaser headline content appearing on the front page. MSNBC.com and CNN.com also give the Spitzer story prominent play on their Web pages, but his party affiliation is not listed on the front page itself. Screencaps to follow.

Interesting how he calls it a "private matter" for his family to deal with, as if it's supposed to make everyone else go away.
That's about as soft a reference as you can make to a political party in a sex scandal story.

Obama: 'If I am not ready, how is it that you think I should be such a great vice president?'
My colleague Carrie Budoff Brown e-mails from Columbus, Miss., with Obama's response to the Clintons' flotation of the notion that he could be her veep: scorn.
COLUMBUS, Miss -- Sen. Barack Obama delivered an animated rebuke today of suggestions from the Clintons in recent days that he could run as her vice president.
“Now first of all with all due respect, with all due respect," he said here during a town hall meeting. "I won twice as many states as Sen. Clinton. I won more of the popular vote than Sen. Clinton. I have more delegates than Sen. Clinton. So I don’t’ know how someone in second place can offer the vice presidency to someone in first place. If I was in second place I could understand but I am in first place right now.
He referenced comments from Bill Clinton in 1992 that his “most important criteria” for vice president was that person must be ready to be commander in chief.
“They have been spending the last two or three weeks” arguing that he is not ready to be commander in chief, Obama said.
“I don’t understand. If I am not ready, how is it that you think I should be such a great vice president?” Obama asked the crowd, which gave him a standing ovation during his defense. “I don’t understand.”
“You can’t say he is not ready on day one, then you want him to be your vice president,” Obama continued. “I just want everybody to absolutely clear: I am not running for vice president. I am running to be president of the United States of America.”
Obama was responding to comments from Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson on a conference call earlier today, in which he suggested that Obama could pass the "threshold" and become commander in chief material this summer.
"Senator Clinton will not choose any candidate who has not at the time of choosing passed the national security threshold. But we have a long way to go until Denver, and it's not something she's prepared to rule out at this point," he said.

Mon, 03/10/2008 - 15:13 ET by nythatesusaBefore she agreed to appear at the press conference, Mrs. Spitzer probably asked, "But you're still going to be rich and powerful, aren't you Eliot?".....(pause for response)...."Oh, OK, I'll be there!"
I think it's not fair
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 15:24 ET by sarcasmoTo go after the spouse in this way. He's the one that did it, after all, and there are kids involved, so even if I think he's a scumbag (and I did even before this incident, so I still do) I'd truly hope his marriage can somehow survive this for their sakes...

If you think it's admirable
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 16:28 ET by nythatesusaIf you think it's admirable to try to cover for someone who is engaged in this kind of behavior while holding this office, I think you're dead wrong. Spitzer's kids, however, are definitely out of bounds.
I could never believe that someone loved me if they agreed to be involved in a propaganda piece like the one that was staged today. This goes for David Vitter's wife as well.
Hillary Clinton is the prime example of a wife who has enabled incredibly abusive behavior towards women with her "see no evil" attitude. On the other hand, Rudolph Giuliani's wife reacted to his behavior with genuine outrage, not political calculation.
I could care less if this marriage is "saved". If any of you have spouses who would have reacted like Mrs. Spitzer has(instead of trying neuter you), I'm afraid you are involved in a sham.
I don't think she's covering for him
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 16:37 ET by sarcasmoBy standing there, but maybe you're right and she's planning to neuter him later, when he least expects it!! Any cheating is certainly wrong even beyond the risk that she'll neuter you. I just have bigger problems with politicians like this guy (or Rudy) than their sex habits. But for humor, this stuff can't be beat! :) If I'm correct, the comedy elves have been working overtime on this material for most of the day... I can't wait.

Check this out....
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 15:24 ET by dronetekI just wanted to see if there was a clear difference in reporting when it was a republican governor, so I googled "republican governor scandal". Right away a story about George Ryan popped up. Every story I found cut to the chase pretty quick when it came to his party.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/12/17/ryan.ap/"
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Former
Gov. George Ryan was indicted Wednesday on federal charges of taking
payoffs, gifts and vacations in return for government contracts and
leases while he was Illinois secretary of state.
Ryan, 69, a Republican known worldwide as a leading critic of the death
penalty, gradually became the focus of a corruption investigation that
began even before his 1998 election as governor. The scandal was a
factor in his 2001 decision not to seek a second term."
and this one also, mentioning his party right off the bat:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/05/12/governor.indicted/index.html
"
(CNN) -- Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher
was indicted Thursday on misdemeanor charges that he directed a scheme
to illegally award state jobs to political supporters, the latest twist
in a year-long probe into hiring practices in his administration.
After
the indictment, the Republican governor released a statement saying the
charges were the result of a "politically motivated, media-driven
investigation" by Democratic Attorney General Greg Stumbo
"
and, CNN on Spitzer, THE SECOND TO LAST SENTENCE in the story!

" The first-term Democrat had been considered a rising star among his party."

It is going to be really interesting to see what the dims do here. This is an election year, where things are maginified to 100 orders of magnitude. (Of course, in the dims case that means only 20 orders of magnitude) but Spitzer is no obscure dim. He's the governor of New York. Much harder to sweep this under the rug.
Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!
He must be a Republican
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 15:25 ET by johnjanoWhen I first saw this on Drudge, I came here to see if you noticed it as well. You had. Great job, Newsbusters.
I looked at about 6 or 7 articles online and only the NYT mentioned his party (at the end of the article). Most articles mentioned a reference to Republicans (Of course they mentioned their party). So to most Americans, who just FOLLOW the mainstream media wherever it takes them, will assume that Spitzer is a Republican because the mainstream media's continuous comments of Republican Party's "Culture of Corruption".
P.S. The only way he will get in real trouble is if he filed his prostitution spending under "job-related expenses" on his taxes.
Interest will die out
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 15:29 ET by 911isbusyI lived in the S.F. Bay Area back a couple of years ago. At that time San Francisco mayor and Democrat Gavin Newsome confessed to having an affair with his campaign manager's wife. Not long before that he announced he had admitted himself to a facility for help with his alcoholism. The media touched the stories all of one day and then all was forgotten (and presumably forgiven). All they covered was Iraq. I always wondered what the S.F. media would have done to Newsome if he had been a Republican.
Those who have not swords can still die upon them.

In contrast Rep Peter King said he should resign immediately because of the ties between organized crime and prostitution. From what I can tell there are not a lot of tears being shed by republican in NY.
Also heard on Fox Business that there were cheers on the floor of the NY Stock Exchange when this thing broke.

And also AP, not labeling (D) anywhere in it's story? Oh, AND, using the word "Republican" twice. So, a major scandal involving a Democrat Governer, and the article's score is: (R) = 2, (D) = 0 ??

Tom Suozzi
Mon, 03/10/2008 - 20:59 ET by easygoerHow do you think Tom Suozzi (D-NY) feels today? He is the Nassau County County Executive. He ran in the primary against Spitzer and lost badly. Mainly because of low name recognition in upstate NY and absolutley no backing from the state party. They wanted him to get out so as not to split the party. He didn't. As a campaigner though, he acquitted himself well. He is very ambitious and I believe he will be governor or senator from NY one day.
On a personal note, I am a friend of Mr. Suozzi. I went to twelve years of Catholic school with him. He stood as best man at my sister's wedding. He was also Mayor of Glen Cove,NY, our hometown. In spite of our disagreements, he's a very nice fellow.
