Ash Wednesday Flashback: Turner Mocks Christian CNN Employees

Photo of Ken Shepherd.

Something from what I like to call the forgive but never forget file. From the MRC.org CyberAlert archives, March 7, 2001:

Ted Turner insulted attendees at Bernard Shaw’s retirement party, asking those on Ash Wednesday with a smudge on their foreheads if they were "a bunch of Jesus freaks," FNC’s Brit Hume reported Tuesday night.

Hume revealed during his "Grapevine" segment on Special Report with Brit Hume:

CNN founder Ted Turner, in town last week for a retirement party for anchor Bernard Shaw, left the staff stunned after meeting with them at the network’s Washington bureau. It was Ash Wednesday and a number of those present still had a smudge on their forehead. ‘What are you?’ asked Turner, ‘a bunch of Jesus freaks? You ought to be working for Fox.’ Turner, it may be remembered, stirred controversy a decade ago when he said Christianity is, quote, ‘for losers.’ He apologized for that, but as recently as last August criticized Christianity for being, quote, ‘very intolerant.’

Sounds like he’s the intolerant one.

Gee, Ted, we Christians

Gee, Ted, we Christians have allowed you to spew your bile against us for years without demanding your imprisonment for "hate crimes."

I'd call that pretty darn tolerant.

but if its a liberal making a mistake, let's bring that back seven years down the road!!!!

i'm looking for a word...i think its hypocritical.

Its Ted Turner for heavens

Its Ted Turner for heavens sakes!!!!! Consider the source. This is the same whacko that thinks the NorKoComms are living in paradise.

The ashes are a 700-year

The ashes are a 700-year old tradition. Our faith has survived many centuries of pagan lunatics like Ted.

Christians as in Catholics at CNN?

Protestants do not do the Priest smear on the forehead, that is Catholic and in knowing so many dark browed people were in the room to cause Turner to pop off the question is:

How is it none of these people have ever told Drudge who is behind the phantom headlines planted on GOP people at CNN mocking them?

Are these people only working for Lou Dobbs?

Finally, do these Catholics only remain so in name only.....sort of like the pro homosexual, pro aborticide Catholics that divorce for money like John Kerry and his crowd?

I find it hard to believe that real Christians work at CNN as I have heard the stories of real Christians having their stomachs turned watching people on the left laugh as they type out stories lying about Americans.

Turner is typical of the Letterman crowd. He just gets caught in public saying what they all believe.

Will any of these Catholics please come forward and post here with a play by play of the Teddy event?

Excuse me, LC, but what on earth are you talking about????

Hey bal,

Do you know any psychobabble translators?

Might come in handy around here. LOL.

I'll try

I'll give it a shot.

When L.C. speaks of the Priest smear, I believe he means the ashes put on the foreheads of Catholics on Ash Wednesday. Protestants do not do this, but Lame Cherry seems to be of the opinion that Catholics were present at the time Turner made these comments, and is wondering why none took offense.

The rest of the post seems to be challenging the strength of the beliefs of the Catholics at CNN in that they do not go to Drudge and out something or another. Okay, I don't get the Drudge reference, but after that, he is wondering if their loyalty is to God or Lou Dobbs.

The rest of the post just goes on about real Christians not working at CNN because the network is pure evil. At least that is what I make of most of it. I think I get his point and agree. :>?

Liberal's Basic Rule For Discourse: I don't care if you agree with my premises, but I demand that you agree with my conclusions.

At what point did I convert?!?

Protestants do not do the Priest smear on the forehead, that is Catholic...

I was raised Anglican (that's Episcopalian for those of you in the United States), and every year our family would go to Ash Wednesday service to mark the beginning of Lent and receive the Imposition of Ashes.

This leads to one of three posibilities:

  1. Did my entire family secretly convert to Catholicism, and nobody told me?
  2. Did the Roman Catholic Church acquire/merge with/otherwise take over the Anglican Church, and nobody told me?
  3. Is Lame Cherry talking out of his Ash (again)?

The difference between liberals and conservatives is that conservatives believe liberals are wrong, while liberals believe conservatives are evil.

Methodist

I was a member of a United Methodist church for more than 10 years that had an Ash Wednesday service every year. As far as I know, they still do.

Ken,

Slow News Day?

Who cares?

Oh, I see...May the wrath of God be upon his head!

Isaiah 66: 15
For behold, the LORD will come in fire
And His chariots like the whirlwind, To render His anger with fury, And His rebuke with flames of fire.

Isaiah 66: 16
For the LORD will execute judgment by fire And by His sword on all flesh, And those slain by the LORD will be many.

Ted, watch your back!

Very germane Scripture

Very germane Scripture quotes, Syrius.  If only Ted would heed them.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.  Matt. 5:11

Agreed. Look, personally, at

Agreed. Look, personally, at the time and now, I wasn't offended. I'm saddened by Turner's sentiments towards my Lord and Savior. Was it a cheap shot to post this as a flashback? Maybe. Was it hypocritical? Maybe. I'm a sinner saved by grace, and I mess up every day. Is anti-Christian, anti-religious sentiment against Christians in the media a worthwhile topic to raise during the Lenten season? Yes.

Ken, I personally

Ken, I personally appreciated the "flashback" -- since that incident, I have come to realize that there is very little left-wing tolerance for things Christian, and sport the ashes every year realizing this.  I mean, what if I were Jewish and wore a yamaka, and Ted pointed me out blurting out something along the lines of "you circumcised Moses freaks"?  I only posted the 1,950 year-old Scripture passage as a reminder of the harsh realities that Christians will always face.  There were anti-Christians then and there are anti-Christians now.  Thankfully, though, we live in a country that protects the freedom of religion and speech (i.e., the freedom of thought and expression).

I think he was misquoted.

I think he was misquoted.  It more likely sounded like this...

I read somewhere that Kiran

I read somewhere that Kiran Chetry said she's a Christian. Of course, she's probably one of those pro-aborticide ones as well. You know, like Jane Fonda and that "Christian" crowd.
