Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to summit Mt. Everest, died last week. CBS's Katie Couric noted the passing in her January 11 "Notebook" at her Couric & Co. blog, but in doing so made a gauzy reference to New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D). Curiously, Couric failed to note that the latter once falsely claimed her parents named her after the New Zealand adventurer. In fact she was born years prior to Sir Edmund's famous climb.
Here's the transcript:
KATIE COURIC, "Evening News" anchor: With all the attention on Hillary Clinton this election year, it's easy to forget that there was another Hillary who once captured the world's attention, Sir Edmund Hillary, the first to conquer the world's tallest mountain, Mt. Everest, in the Himalayas.
COURIC: He died early Friday in New Zealand. He was 88.
COURIC: Like that other Hillary, Sir Edmund set out to make history. He wanted to scale a peak most people thought impossible. Scores had died trying to climb Everest. The dangers were extraordinary. Howling 100 mile-an-hour winds, perpetual cold and air so thin you need an oxygen tank. But Sir Edmund with his sherpa guide Tenzeng Norgay defied the odds and the experts and went where no one had gone before, literally to the top of the world, 29,035 feet above sea level on May 29, 1953.
COURIC: That achievement should be an inspiration to anyone seeking to climb any mountain in life, no matter how daunting. That's a page from my notebook, I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.

Katie demonstrates, once again, why the pages from her notebook would be better used if they were hanging adjacent to a toilet...

Hillary was his last name Katie...
January 14, 2008 - 14:53 ET by WildBillHow many people link someone's last name to someone else's first name? Pathetic doesn't even come close to describing the entire Couric fiasco at CBS.

January 14, 2008 - 14:54 ET by bigtimerKatie...that blather is pathetic tripe...inserting her politics as usual...wished the little woman would just go away...I just wished she would get zilch for attention, about like her ratings.
Btw...I bet Sir Edmund's family really appreciates this kind of memoriam.
That's ok...

Hillary's namesake?
January 14, 2008 - 15:49 ET by PrairieSkyAh, Katie Couric, what a wise sage she is...(I can't believe she is still on the air!) This story about Hillary being named after Sir Edmund Hillary just keeps on giving, doesn't it?? What a bogus bunch of tripe given the fact that Sir Edmund didn't make his historic climb until good 'ol Hill was already 6 years old!! Kind of tough to name a baby after someone else who was made famous for an achievement that hadn't even happened yet when the child was born!! Well, if you are a Clinton, you don't let a minor problem like the truth get in the way...You just make it up as you go along.

My post on this vid Saturday
January 14, 2008 - 16:00 ET by reasonsjesterMr. Shepherd makes a great catch that Hillary had fabricated a story about being named after Sir Edmund Hillary, I had forgotten about that. Anyhow, I posted a story about this this weekend. It is located here, along with my take on the matter. Cheers to Newsbusters for bringing this up. I was sincerely outraged.

Thanks for making note of it.
Thats cool
January 14, 2008 - 17:06 ET by reasonsjesterIts all good, Mr. Shepherd. Glad you brought this up. My concern with this story is that Couric's vid is a form of not-so-subliminal campaigning. If Katie is going to come straight out and support Hillary, she should do it. Then her viewers can appropriately discredit her when she is discussing political issues regarding Hillary with a supposedly "objective" air. Best regards, KNAB (reasonsjester)

Too bad Hillary wasn't named Jesus then
January 14, 2008 - 17:15 ET by Lame CherryMaybe Hillary should change her name to Jesus as one would be sure Perky would find all kinds of divine comparing to do with Dame Hamrod.
I wonder if Couric actually ever runs any of this by anyone with a brain.........comparing Sir Edmund Hillary on a life threatening feat with Hillary Clinton just because she has part of a same name?
Bill should be the one praised as he survived more lamps bounced off his head from Hillary and that is life threatening.
The only think Hillary ever did in life which was dangerous was being in bed with her various sex partners and risking getting Aids.
We now return you to the snow job of CBS, Perky Couric.

Sir Edmund Rodham Hillary?
January 14, 2008 - 17:38 ET by Del DolemonteWant a laugh? Go to the Snopes urban legend site, and look up their take on her claim that she was named after him.
While they eventually decide that she was in fact fibbing, they give her every possible benefit of the doubt as well. Their gymnastics would win a Gold Medal in the BS Olympics.

Hey!
January 14, 2008 - 18:09 ET by dervishWe're only slightly past the anniversary of another historic exit from this life. I can see another of Katie's pages coming:
"It's been just over a year since the passing of Saddam Hussein, the Middle Eastern leader who was deposed by the US Army in the Iraq War. Ironically, one of the candidates for leadership of that same US is named ..."
Nah -- I guess not.
