Washington Post staffers Jonathan Weisman and Steven Mufson gaver readers of the December 7 paper an article on a "comprehensive energy bill" that passed the House of Representatives without delving into Republican criticism that the bill lacks any provision to produce or procure more energy domestically, such as from interior and off-shore natural gas and oil reserves.
Weisman and Mufson noted in the lede that the bill will raise "fuel-efficiency standards" and "require increased use of renewable energy sources" and later quickly dispatched with Republican opposition by finely chopping Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner's (R-Ohio) criticism:
Even House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) -- who assails the measure as a "no-energy" bill and as a tax increase that would raise, not lower, energy costs -- lauded the CAFE (corporate average fuel efficiency) standards as a good and reasonable compromise.
Oh really? On it's "Online Newshour" Web page, PBS -- hardly a right-wing news venue -- gave readers more of Boehner's critical quote:
Republicans derided it as a "no energy bill" because it doesn't open new U.S. acreage to oil and natural gas drilling, Reuters reported. They said the bill will do nothing to curb soaring prices for gasoline and home heating fuels.
[...]
"There's nothing in here that's going to lower gas prices in America ... nothing that is going to help American families deal with heating costs this winter ... nothing to increase production," said Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio.
In the Washington Post front pager, not once do the words "drilling" or "natural gas" occur, although Republicans and conservatives often hit environmentalists and Democrats for opposing drilling for natural gas in the Rockies or for oil in ANWR or the Gulf of Mexico.

Jimmy Carter redux
December 7, 2007 - 17:22 ET by wizardjrWe must have pain to save Mother Earth. Humans must be eliminated. In the meantime, make things as uncomfortable as possible.
This piece of junk is like an LSD bad trip flashback. Jimmy Carter tried this insanity and history has many pages and pictures of how that worked out for America. You cannot conserve your way to prosperity.
IS the USA the only Country who has stopped new drilling ?
December 7, 2007 - 17:30 ET by JayTeeIs the USA the only Country on the Planet that is Ignoring it's Oil reserves and refusing to let the Oil Companies have access to those reserves ?
Why did congress call in the CEO's of the Major Oil Companies last year, to a congressional hearing, if the Congress was not going to act on their reccommendations ?
At the end of the hearings Congress asked what was the ONE SINGLE issue that the Oil companies needed from the Govt. ?
The Answer: ACCESS
Oil Companies know where "American" resources are, they just need access.
Looks like Congress is going to wait patently for a Miracle Energy cure, as they continue being delusional that "Today" there exists alternatives to Oil .... we're just not developing them fast enough.
Canada certainly isn't letting any grass grow under their exploratory feet, nor Mexico.

From Congressional hearings
December 7, 2007 - 17:39 ET by JayTee"executives at the congressional hearings pointed out they are reinvesting most of their profits in new production, but that declining production from mature oilfields in the United States and legal restrictions on access to the areas with the most potential for large new supplies are limiting domestic investment opportunities."
Congress is acting like a CHOKE on Gas production........

The only way we will ever
December 7, 2007 - 17:35 ET by Gary P JacksonThe only way we will ever be energy independent is to become energy independent. By that I mean we have to start drilling for oil and natural gas.
Ethanol is great for racing, because it has a higher octane rating, but it doesn't have as much power. There is roughly 20 to 25 percent less energy mass, by density, in ethanol over gasoline. So, to get the same power, you have to run more fuel volume, which is quite OK for racing, but as a common fuel alternative, it means you end up getting less MPG, because you have to burn more fuel to get there. And since ethanol is just slightly less in cost than gasoline, it is more expensive to run the stuff. And all this before you figure in the fuel used to plant, maintain, and cultivate the crop, and all of the manufacturing and transportation costs! The January 2008 edition of Hot Rod Magazine has a really good article on the up and downsides of E85.
Bio-diesel is a bit better, because of course, the diesel was designed to run on vegetable oil in the first place. But except for the cases of folks who are burning used oil from restaurant's fryers, you still gotta grow stuff, and that means using fuel, and petroleum products. And America doesn't have all that many choices for diesel powered cars. Of course, the trucking fleets could easily run bio-diesel with many advantages.
Electric hybrids are still only successful for short trip city driving, and even at that, they are wildly expensive to own, and if saving money is the exercise, they are a failure. As more are sold, some prices will come down, but if you magically changed every car out there to a hybrid, it has been estimated that within 10 years we'd be back where we are now, in national fuel consumption, because of growth.
Hydrogen is still in the works, but won't be workable for years. It does have potential to be the magic bullet though.
Solar does work, but it also is expensive, and has it's limitations. And just TRY and open a new wind farm! The wackos come out of the woodwork for that! Look at the current fuss over the proposed farm on the South Texas coast!
We need a leader who will give the JFK speech. (no, the other one)We need someone who will frame our situation in the same way Jack Kennedy framed going to the moon. We need a leader who understands oil, OUR oil, is the Nation's best hope for the near term. (as in the next 20 to 50 years) We need a leader who will make drilling for oil a national issue, and help America understand just how much of a security issue getting our oil from madmen is. We need someone who will put the USA on a 10 year plan.
A ten year plan is needed and it should look something like this: Drill for oil. Anyplace that makes sense, like Alaska, or offshore. Anywhere in the country that would really endanger the environment would be off limits, but those are few. Next, we need more refining capability. We import refined gasoline in this country. That's insane. No excuse for not having enough refining capacity.
We also need to start building nuclear power plants. Again, it makes no sense that we don't get more power from nuclear. If FRANCE can do it, surely we can!
Clean coal is a reality, use it! And don't forget natural gas for electricity generation.
Along with this, continue to work on alternatives such a hydrogen, solar, whatever. But realize that petroleum will drive this world for the better part of the next 100 years. Our only real issue is do we want to get it from enemies, or from our own land, remembering America will become more and more of a slave to the whims of our enemies as long as we do business with them. That is the only issue that matters!

Are we in a political fight?
December 7, 2007 - 20:58 ET by pbthinkerIt's about time the Republicans decided to get involved, in this political fight. I'm fed up with the Democrats saying they have an energy bill (and getting away with it) that does absolutely nothing to solve the energy problems we face. It's time for the Republican Party to call them on it.
Most Americans can understand the simple things. We have Hugo Chavez threatening us, claiming he'll shut down his spicket, and there's little we can do because we don't have our own supply. Does anyone believe the average American, if he were required to think about that, would not want to drill on ANWAR and in the Gulf of Mexico? Let's put that out there and see what flies. If Americans want to pay $6.00 for gasoline they'll vote that way, if not, they'll vote for drilling. I don't see that fight out there right now.

Hate to point out the obvious buddy, but didn't the Republicans recently "control" the executive, the house and the Senate?
Okay, there wasn't a conservative grip on the SCOTUS - but man, if they didn't do anything then, is is likely now?
