Bible Ban at Beijing Olympics: No Major Media Notice Yet

Photo of Ken Shepherd.

Update (Nov. 8 | 13:00 EST): International and Beijing Olympic officials are denying any such Bible ban exists. Click here for the story.

"Olympic agencies of the free world shouldn't tolerate this kind of intolerance. But will the media notice?" NewsBusters senior editor Tim Graham asked in a Sunday blog post, referring to a November 2 Catholic News Agency article reporting the Communist Chinese government's plan to bar athletes from bringing Bibles along with their other personal effects in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Unfortunately, a full four days after the CNA article, it seems major print and television media have ignored the story. A Nexis search of major newspapers from November 2-6 yielded no stories on the matter. Ditto with a search of ABC, CBS, and NBC news transcripts, as well as a search of MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News.

A notable exception to the general media silence: Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto. Just after the half-hour mark to his November 6 program the host of "Your World with Neil Cavuto" covered the controversy as he interviewed evangelist Bill Keller, who is urging the United States government to boycott next year's Summer Games should China not repeal the policy.

Cavuto and Keller noted that the Koran, unlike the Bible, was not similarly on the censorship list.

Bill Keller is right.We

Bill Keller is right.

We had better boycott...nobody but nobody should tell anyone if they can bring their own personal Bible when they travel....

What total outrageous hypocrisy and tripe is this if you can bring on the Koran but not the Bible!

Btw...I hope this does gain msm attention...soon!

Religion/faith is in the

Religion/faith is in the mind/soul of the competitors. Leave it at that.

ie: Chariots of Fire

Ban lobbyists of ALL religions and assume the young folk are on their own walk with the creator. or should that be run, jump, hurtle?

Looking forward to seeing  the young of the world coming together to compete in sport. Honestly without juice.

4arrow I won't leave it

4arrow

I won't leave it at that...

I watch the Olympics have for years...

The hypocrisy of this had better get straightened out one way or the other.

Okay to bring Koran...not Bible?

Give me a break.

Dear I said leave ALL

Dear I said leave ALL lobbyists out of the games.

4a... Dear....What

4a...

Dear....What lobbyists?

Look I usually do not comment on the religious threads, it takes quite a lot for me too, but this is utter hypocrisy.

Btw...I hope your husband recovers with whatever ails him.

Have Fun Denying Jesus Christ

Matthew 10:33

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

You won't even take a stand to simply voice the right to carry a Bible?!!

Luke 14:34-35

(34) Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

(35) It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

That's SO weird. I was about

Balboa, You'll find the

Balboa, You'll find the Bible HAS answer to everything...If you read it through and apply.

I would bring a suitcase full of Bibles

Then give them out while sightseeing, and if they confiscated them I would refuse to participate.

Or maybe a suitcase full of mini mp3 players with the bible on them.

There should be donations for some athlete that wanted to do this.

Do you really want to stir

Do you really want to stir up the argument of which Bible?

The highly edited KJV?  Remember the admonision at the end of appoc/rev?  Don't change a word of this.

Leave the kids alone.  Who are you to say that the faith of their fathers need YOU to butt in?

4, Some Christians do

4, Some Christians do things for the glory of God- even sports. The Bible to them are more than just personal stuff, it is a part of their lives- whether the highly edited KJV, NIV or other versions.

If they are my olympic-bound kids, then, they are not going, period!

4

Y 4 would we decide which Bible?  Wouldn't the atheletes choose their own?  What have you or I to do with it?

GoHunter08

If I were on the board, I

If I were on the board, I would hold a vote to have an emergency change of location. Greece held it last, right? So they should be the best set up for it. Since China had to agree to certain things before they were aloud to hold the games and they sneakily went back on their contract, China should be barred from participating in the games for the next 16 years.

Though I usually

Though I usually don't watch the Olympics and have watched it sparingly, I am upset that China would ban Bibles from the competitors. Religion is their heart and soul. China is an atheistic Commie nation anyway, so go figure.

P.S.: I don't hate the Chinese people, just their Commie government.

"Kame-Hame-HAAAA!!!!!" - Son Goku, destroying Usama Bin Laden.

DO... P.S.: I don't hate

DO...

P.S.: I don't hate the Chinese people, just their Commie government.

Exactly.

Again, who are you to

Again, who are you to assume that the competitors do not follow the faith of their fathers?

Do you want something to do? Convert the pol's.

4a... Who are you to

4a...

Who are you to decide if a competitor wants to take their own personal Bible in their own suitcase or not...but it is okay with you with the hypocrisy of others allowed to bring the Koran?

Why don't you just answer that for once..

The hypocrisy 4arrow... the hypocrisy..

You need to re read my

You need to re read my message.  No where did I mention that it was okay to hawk the Koran.

This is a prime example of why wars start, because dopey people cannot read.

Again, let the kids alone to compete.

4a ...and you must be

4a

...and you must be brain-dead.

I asked you about the hypocrisy.

You have not answered.

I won't ask again knowing now that you have nothing but empty airspace from ear to ear.

Funny you should mention in

Funny you should mention in your vulgar words 'brain dead"

I missed your point  asking me about your "boogaboo" hypocricy.

Are you sure your are responding to the right poster?

Dear...Like I said,

Dear...

Like I said, either you are not comprehending from the beginning of our posts to this point...

I put the word hypocrisy in every one of them/asked you to answer after you followed me with you first comment.

You still avoid it.

Re read the threads.

Btw...dear, don't use words like dopey people who can't read...if you don't want a reply you don't like.

Did you read Ken's words about all of this in the first place and you still avoid hypocrisy.

...figures 4a....I've learned a lot about you tonight.

Just a conspiracy theory...

...on why the bible is outlawed in China but not the Koran. After all the bible says treat others the way you want to be treated and honor God with all you do. The Koran says to submit and surrender. Which of these two ideologies refelcts communism?

Would you settle down if

Would you settle down if all religious books  were banned?

 To paraphrase the good book

Don't look for the hockey puck in someone elses eye when you have a hockey stick protruding from your darned judgemental head!

why stop there

just ban all books

GoHunter08

Jeez

I said it was a consperiacy theory...I didn't say that's why this is happening.

Do you realize how much it costs to run for office? More than any honest man could afford. -Montgomery Burns

 Who cares what the

Who cares what the ChiCom's want?

People in hell want ice water but they ain't getting that!  I say bring your Bibles,  read where ever you want to,  and see what these commies will do.  I'm thinking not a damn thing.

And if they ARE foolish enough to do something,  we know what to do,  it's about time it was done anyway.  These commies have never impressed me.  Talk about paper tigers....those old commies are just hanging on by a thread..one push in the right direction,  and they're done for.  I can't wait..it'll happen.  I also hope these commies read these threads.  I will repeat what my Grandpa always said about commies.."cut their ugly heads off and throw 'em at the dead bastards...the SOB's"..I STILL agree with that!

We just concluded a 5-day

We just concluded a 5-day Missions Conference and our speaker- a Missionary to China- confered that the Bible indeed is banned throughout Chinaland. Religion is not tolerated and the assembly of more than a few people is prohibited- whether its religious or not, and if its not sanctioned by the government. So, we should expect Bible-believers or Koran-believers to be dispersed or disallowed to gather (but probably the Koran-huggers will have a pass, as this article pointed).

As to your hope that Chinese will read these threads, remember the government controls what's on the net, tv, radio, shows, movies, etc...

Well, does anyone think

Well, does anyone think that ABC News will use faux bibles at the Chinese Olympics with hidden cameras to see their reaction?

Oh, wait a minute - communists - one of the liberals' protected thugs.  What was I thinking?

Here's why:

Worship services are being broken up by baton-wielding police officers, participants arrested, Bibles confiscated and Christian church buildings demolished. But still, an estimated 3,000 people every day come to a knowledge of Jesus Christ in China. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53808  My church, which has sent missionaries to China, recently said the number is 6,000 a day (can't verify that).

Hey Islamonazis! Guess what's the fastest-growing religion in the world NOW?

Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.
