The Bush administration has "finally been caught in their criminality," MSNBC host and former Speaker Tip O'Neill (D-Mass.) aide Chris Matthews seethed at the 10th anniversary party for his "Hardball" program, the Washington Examiner is reporting.
They're strong and loaded words, of course, but only the latest example of Matthews history of political bias against conservatives and the GOP. Yet coming as it does so close to the October 9 Republican presidential debate that Matthews will host, RedState's Erick Erickson is urging Republican candidates to call Matthews on the carpet for his bias.:
You know, I will be gravely disappointed if the GOP candidates do not make an issue of this at the debate.
If the GOP candidates are too chicken to take on Chris Matthews before a live television audience on Matthew's gross bias, they will have disgraced us all.
At the very minimum, I would expect the GOP candidates, should they get another, and I paraphrase Matthews' question, "Don't you want to give Bill Clinton oral sex" debate question, should respond in the Reaganesque manner of "What the hell type of question is this you filthy, dirty leftist?!?!"
I wouldn't hold my breath if I were Erick, if the performance from the candidates who attended last week's PBS/Tavis Smiley debate are any indication. That debate, which NewsBusters executive editor Matt Sheffield and I attended in person, was a sop to the left with every question skewing to the left and/or putting Republicans on the defensive for real and perceived slights by the GOP against black voters over the past 142 years -- one questioner insisted that no Republican president since Lincoln did anything of lasting positive benefit to black Americans.
Yet at no time were any complaints registered by the debate participants about the solidly left-wing skew of the questions, nor of how moderator Tavis Smiley once called President Bush a "serial killer" for his presiding over numerous executions when Governor of Texas.
MRC/NB's Tim Graham has more on Smiley's liberal bias here. Check here for a compendium of Matthews bias coverage on NewsBusters.

I honestly think the Repubs should use these debate as practice against the Dem candidates, and even suggest they are doing just that, just to give the MSM the heads up that they are aware of their bias and are planning to call them on it.

October 5, 2007 - 22:01 ET by danybhoyThose running for the GOP nomination should hit Matthews point blank with this, but that's not all. I'm assuming that NBCnews will have team coverage with all the regular suspects who are suspect, including 1 BathTubBoy. Call him out, demand that he be the host of the last NBC debate. I would love to see Mit, Fred, John, & esspcially Rudy butt heads with this pompus @$$. I don't believe he could handle the pressure of the moment.

October 5, 2007 - 15:04 ET by sarcasmoIn order for a candidate to do what you want (and NB's agenda, while laudable, isn't any candidate's agenda too unless it helps him to get elected!) he'd have to do one of 2 things as I see it.
1. Take some of his own speech time to bitch about the moderator, or
2. Find a way during supposedly answering a question to bitch about the moderator. I suspect candidates will want to do this one.
I'm wondering what people here think Republican candidates should say to Matthews about his bias? Should they wait for a biased question, or go on the attack first, even if it's on their own time? He's pretty slick, so Chris won't be easy to bust for this, and I'm not sure how much discrediting Matthews will do in the primary for any candidate who finds a way to do it.

cojones deprivation, thats why
October 5, 2007 - 17:44 ET by ThalpyFor some years now the Republicans have had a majority, yet seldom turned it to their advantage. Cojones deprivation is the answer. They simply do not have a killer instinct necessary for the street fights they must have with the Democrats. Why should we expect it to be any different with that wimp Chris Matthews? If any of them had any cojones at all they would crush Matthews like a bug. They don't and won't. Zell Miller did a great job on Chris several years ago, but then, Zell is a Democrat.

Republican Candidates Can Do It
October 5, 2007 - 18:05 ET by deerjerkydaveThe candidates can accomplish the task of smacking down liberal reporters without making a scene. Liberal reporters always premise their questions from the left. The conservative candidates simply need to repeatedly challenge these premises as being from the left and consequently wrong. If this happens enough the public will catch on that the reporter is exhibiting bias. For example, when Christ Matthews asks, "What will you do as President to help minorities with health care?" (this question is from the left because it assumes that the job of the President is to provide these benefits) the answer should challenge the premise and state that they are best served by getting out of their way through less government regulation and intrusion. That this is what America was founded on and why America is the greatest nation on the planet. End of story.
They can be assured that if
October 5, 2007 - 18:32 ET by buddycThey can be assured that if they don't touch on it, that Matthews will. It was probably done to get someone to make a knee jerk reaction attacking Matthews and blindly supporting Bush. They could compliment Bush as a man of integrity regardless of whether you agree with his policies but no president is above the law and the laws should be enforced. But as for this candidate he would prefer to see the congress look into tax reform, health care reform, tort reform or whatever this candidates agenda is instead of looking into every single allegation for political purposes and regardless of how lacking in facts it might be.
They just need to bring

October 6, 2007 - 01:21 ET by KeithI'm sorry, but why on earth would they go? Have they no BALLS? Gee, here's a perfect opportunity to force a liberal sleazebag off the air. All the Republican candidates have to do is REFUSE TO BE MODERATED BY MATTHEWS. Sound too much like common sense? The stink that this would make would then allow Republicans to PLASTER THE INTERNET and EVERY INTERVIEW THEY GIVE, with some biased stupid liberal remark that Matthews made. In a week he'll be FIRED because the wealth of information would be just too much. This is how the democrats are going after YOU! As Sean Connery asked Kevin Costner in "The Untouchables", "WHAT ARE YE PREPARED TO DO?"'
