As an MRC study has proven, liberal broadcast media has a strong record of skewed coverage of illegal immigration. Print coverage in major metropolitan broadsheets in no different. In her August 30 article, Washington Post staff writer Pamela Constable featured English-speaking illegal immigrants lamenting "hateful talk against immigrants."
"Many have no legal documents," Constable conceded of the day laborers waiting at 5:30 a.m. outside a Gaithersburg, Md., work center operated by "the nonprofit CASA de Maryland." Constable failed to note anywhere in her article the pro-illegal immigration, pro-amnesty stance CASA consistently promotes.
Indeed, Constable's mission was not to report both sides of the immigration debate, but rather to paint a stark, emotional account full of loaded language, including comparing the plight of illegal immigrants to Jews hiding from Nazi persecution:
They have anxiously followed the news of Virginia communities passing laws against illegal immigrants, of stepped-up factory raids and deportations. And they hear the angry voices.
"A guy hired me the other day to do some painting. I got in his van and right away he turned on the radio. It was one of those stations that is full of hateful talk against immigrants. I just sat in the back and said nothing, but it made me feel like a Jew in Nazi Germany."
The speaker, a young Salvadoran named Angel, gives a brief, bitter smile.
The others nod and guffaw, glance up from scanning "Deportes" or "Clasificados" in the weekly Spanish-language newspapers.
"Americans complain that we don't learn English, but I'm glad a lot of my friends don't know the language," Angel says. "If they could hear what the media say about us, it would hurt their hearts."
Later in the article, Constable conflated mindless violence with peaceful protest, lumping both together as examples of "critics" of the Gaithersburg day labor trailer:
But for some local opponents, the site is still not far enough away. On the day the trailer was inaugurated, someone came early in the morning, poured flammable liquid on the porch and set it on fire.
On two other mornings since, protesters gathered nearby, holding up signs and shouting slogans. The police came, and the TV cameras, but the staff members told the men to ignore them and ushered work trucks past the picketers, who eventually left.
Constable found no critics of the day labor center to quote for her article, even though she informed the reader that "it is assumed" most day labor center workers are in the country illegally.
As icing on the cake, Constable tipped her hat to the religious left, closing with an immigrant singing a hymn with a decidedly political double meaning for her immigration story:
Someone prods Ernesto for a song. He is a small, solid Mexican of few words, embarrassed at the attention. He tunes his guitar, clears his throat. A tentative chord, then suddenly he is thrumming and thumping, eyes closed, head lifted. It is a spirited ballad, straight out of the popular church.
"On this Earth I have no citizenship," Ernesto sings in a strong, soaring voice. "My only house is in heaven." The men nod knowingly, and burst into applause.

Where are the ovens in which illegals from Guatamala are loaded and cremated?

The people who hire illegal aliens
August 30, 2007 - 16:57 ET by c5thenDo so because they pay them less than minimum wage, don't have to withold any taxes and pay them mostly in cash under the table. The illegal aliens do not pay any taxes at all.

August 30, 2007 - 17:15 ET by Lame CherryLet us compare for Constable, American illegals vs Nazi Jews
American illegals: Free Health care
Nazi Jews: Worked to death
American illegals: Welfare government housing
Nazi Jews: Warsaw Ghetto
American illegals: Detained, not arrested set free to rape and pillage
Nazi Jews: A boot to the gut and a bullet to the head
American illegals: Wick programs for children
Nazi Jews: Nazi experiments on children
American illegals: Marching in the streets demanding more rights.
Nazi Jews: Beat in the streets on Crystal Night
American illegals: Voting
Nazi Jews: DEAD
I can see how Washington Post writer Pammy Constable can see that American illegals have so much in common with Nazi Jews persecuted.........SHEESH!

OUTRAGEOUS
August 30, 2007 - 17:20 ET by mattmThe Jews were LEGAL residents and CITIZENS of the countries they were living in when the German national-socialists turned them into slaves and then murdered them... (Same goes for the millions who were murdered by the bolsheviks)
And the WaPo wants to equate them with ILLEGAL aliens who are living better (illegally) here than they would live legally in their own country?!?

I have an idea...
August 30, 2007 - 17:22 ET by c5thenWhy don't we set up a homeland for the poor persecuted illegal aliens like they did after WW2 for the Jews. Say...somewhere south of Texas. That way they can have their very own country to run and never feel persecuted and repressed again.

This article is despicable
August 30, 2007 - 17:37 ET by Conservative_in_mass.This article is despicable on several levels. First, to compare the "plight"of illegal alien law breakers in the United States with the suffering of European Jews under Nazi Germany is so insulting as to defy logic.
Now I'm going to draw some "comparisons":
From 1933 until the fall of the Riech, Jews had to wear a yellow star of David...what do illegal aliens wear to I.D. themselves?
Jews under Hitler's Germany could not drive an unregistered, uninspected car without a license.
Jews could not work "under the table" w/o "documents".
Jews could not drop anchor babies as a means to citizenship.
Jews could not expect (and demand) free education, medical attention, welfare or housing that the good ol U.S. provides for these people.
Jews could not expect bail, or bench tickets from sympathetic Judges after they have been caught commiting acts of violence against AMERICAN citizens.
Jewish citizens had to live under the constant threat of a summary deportation to a concentration camp from 1934 on. After the Wannsee conference in 1941, they were targeted for extermination. They could not file lawsuits in Federal courts claiming their "rights"were violated.
Berlin, Cologne, and Dresden were never declared "sanctuary cities."
All the main stream morons are doing is finding talking points for these trespassing lawbreakers. I say re-open Ellis Island, my parents went through there, why can't they?
I'll Add A Couple More
August 30, 2007 - 19:36 ET by stratmanJews could not hide out in religious places like Churches for a year, be called activists, and travel to a public speaking engagement all the while known to government authorities who did nothing. Nor would the Jews have the luxury of telling the government their anchor child was staying in the country.
Jews were not sneaking across the border into Nazi Germany.
Yeah. The similarities are stunning!

August 30, 2007 - 18:21 ET by drillanwrMy! My! It's so easy for liberals to pull out that old "Nazi" card from inside their sleeve. PETA compared the killing of chickens to the Holocaust. I've heard it said Bush's federal government handling of post Katrina New Orleans was a Holocaust. The enemy being held in Gitmo are Holocaust victims. The prisoners at Abu Grey-abb (Rosie speak) was a Holocaust. Now illegal aliens spilling into OUR country are Holocaust victims? Constable and the poor illegal alien who heard hateful talk radio need to actually meet and talk with Holocaust survivors. I'm sure the Holocaust victims will love to hear how diminished their history has become. As for It was one of those stations that is full of hateful talk against immigrants ... While I would never be able
August 30, 2007 - 21:55 ET by Conservative_in_mass.While I would never be able to understand the suffering of a camp survivor, I did have an uncle who was with the 11th armored division of the 3rd army that participated in the "official" liberation of the Mauthausen camp in Austria. While this camp was not a "household' name like Dachau, Aushwitz or Bergen-Belsen...it took him 45 years to even begin to speak of the horror of what he saw.
For me, that said it all.
Speakinf of media "hateful talk against immigrants"
August 30, 2007 - 18:51 ET by acumenMRC Notable Quotables - August 1, 2003 seems appropriate on this one:
PBS cares about the riff-raff and plight of undocumented aliens and condemning mean-spirited conservatives for not caring about them -- think of many prime time PBS specials on those being “left behind” and lectures from Bill Moyers -- but not when they actually have to see them next door.
Earlier this week, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, CEO of WETA, the Washington, DC PBS station really located in Arlington County, Virginia, lashed out at the county board for voting to build a pavilion, to house day laborers waiting for work, next door to WETA’s studios where the PBS NewsHour and Washington Week are taped.
“WETA balks at having day-labor shelter next door,” declared the headline over the July 31 story in the Northern Virginia Journal about WETA’s reaction to the Tuesday night vote by the all-Democratic county Board of Supervisors.
An excerpt from the story by Scott McCaffrey:
The Arlington County Board's decision to build a $100,000 pavilion to house day laborers waiting for work may have severely ruptured relations with one of the county's most prominent employers.
After more than three hours of public comment and debate, County Board members voted 4-1 to spend up to $140,000 to create the new facility, which would be located not far from Interstate 395 at the intersection of 27th Street South and South Shirlington Road.
The new facility is designed to give day laborers, mostly Hispanic immigrants, a place to congregate and meet employers each day. It is located across Four Mile Run Drive from the current, informal day-laborer site on the Washington & Old Dominion Regional Park trail head.
The new day-laborer site will be located adjacent to the WETA broadcast facility, one of several buildings it uses in Shirlington.
WETA's Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, who made an almost unprecedented appearance at the board meeting, was stinging in her rebuke to board members.
“You've been wonderful to work with -- until recently," Rockefeller said.
She predicted a “pretty hostile environment" for WETA employees who could be accosted by day laborers while walking from one building to another. Putting the day-laborer building in the planned location will also inconvenience high-profile guests who arrive to be interviewed on the “NewsHour," public broadcasting's signature news program that is produced from WETA's studios in Shirlington, Rockefeller said.
“This is not going to be a good solution," Rockefeller said. “It would absolutely complicate our lives."...
On average, about 30 workers congregate most mornings at the current pickup site, county officials said. About two-thirds of them find employment and are gone by noon.
The new facility, located adjacent to Arlington's Jennie Dean Park, will be open to employers from 6 a.m. to noon daily. Although pickup facilities will be closed at noon, day laborers who did not find work will be allowed to stay in the vicinity throughout the day.
County officials promised a vigorous police presence, something they acknowledge does not always occur at the current day-laborer site. Police will not, however, take on the role of immigration officers; county officials concede that many of those who are looking for work are in the United States illegally....

August 30, 2007 - 18:53 ET by Trix RabbitI have no doubt that many of Constable's readers will fall for this fabricated apartheid story, hook, line, and sinker.
As one who speaks Spanish fluently, I am in constant contact with Hispanics - legal, illegal, and otherwise. Not a single, and I repeat, not a single one of them has ever compared the U.S. to Nazi Germany.
I would submit that this hit piece, which indulges in the leftist's tendency that everything that does not concur with their views is to be labeled as "Nazi", is misleading, false, and wholly devoid of facts.
I would wager that Pamelita does not even have the basic Spanish vocabulary and literary skills beyond that of a first semester middle school student. Her journalism skills are hardly better.

My take on this whole issue
August 31, 2007 - 12:37 ET by mbrewer1As somebody with an interesting perspective on the immigration process, let me chip in my two cents worth....
My wife and I adopted a baby girl from Guatemala in December, 2005, so I know a little bit about the immigration process, as we had to complete it on behalf of my infant daughter. Let's suffice to say that the process was long, and unnecessarily complicated. But we completed it, and, very recently, my daughter (now 2) just received her "Certificate of Citizenship" from our government. So she is endowed with the same rights as I am (except for being president...she wasn't born here)....but she only entitled to those rights BECAUSE WE ABIDED BY THE IMMIGRATION RULES!
To those that enter into this country illegally, and demand anything from my government...using my tax dollars to pay for it, I say this.....We should treat you like your home country treats the illegal immigrants inside its borders!
Do you think that the illegal Guatemalan and Honduran immigrants in Mexico are given free health care? That they gather in the streets to demand fair wages, free education, some form of "work amnesty" program? Heck no! They are lucky if the survive the work season without being robbed or killed.
If you chose to come here and work "under the table", then keep your head down and your mouth shut! You are not a citizen, so you have no entitlement to any of the services reserved for citizens. If being here is so important...then do it right, and don't complain if you get caught and deported.
You could always go work in Guatemala.......
Hurray for the WaPo!!!

Instead of treating the illegals as victims, perhaps they should focus on them as criminals.

WaPo is sinking almost as fast as the nyt, this editor needs to be replaced before he does any more damage, any editor that will allow idiots like constable to expouse this hate of America should be held up for ridicule.

August 31, 2007 - 13:16 ET by dscottLet's look at this from the flip side, if Hitler treated the Jews as we Americans do the illegals, there would be 6 million more people on the planet today plus their progeny. Yes Hitler did deport Jews however only for the political purpose of taking advantage of anti-semetism of the time to rationalize his behavior, you do remember that ship of Jewish refugees no country would take in? What happened to them?
The real shameful act was the failure of governments south of the border to enact sound fiscal and economic policy to foster business investment and enforce the laws regarding corruption. It's not like they didn't have an example of how things work and what the potential could be. It's called the selfishness of politcal leaders who were more interested in their personal wealth than that of their people. Yet foolish liberals always blame America instead of demanding those governments actually give a crap about their people.
