Obama and Government Job Creation

Media sources seemed to be thrilled that Obama is promising to save or create millions of new jobs. The only problem is they seem to purposefully fail to mention that these will primarily be government jobs. From Libertarian Republican:

 A check of all the major mainstream media sources this morning, finds that not a single one of them are using either the phase "Government Jobs," or "Public Sector," in their reporting on Obama's 2.5 million Jobs Program.

The AP is typical of the style of reporting:

On Saturday, Obama announced his plan to save or create 2.5 million jobs by investing billions of dollars to rebuild roads and bridges, modernize schools and develop alternative energy sources and efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address. A video was available on Obama's transition Web site.

Nowhere in the 14 paragraph article, is it mentioned that the jobs Obama plans to create are entirely in the public sector.

But it's not limited to the AP. The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and NY Times described Obama's plan similarly to the AP, without mentioning that these were public sector, or government jobs.

One of the saddest aspects of this whole boondoggle

will be that the cost for capital projects is at an all time high in many locations (the entire gulf coast for example).  Part of this is the hourly rate for skilled manual labor (welders, etc.).  The wages for some of these people exceed 95% of all employees at a typical manufacturing employees (we're talking $70/hr or more).  Typical gov't, pay top $ for the least amount of results....

My first thought when I read the quote from Obama elsewhere was "that sounds like the old WPA or whatever it was called back then."

Mr. President-elect, please explain how hiring people to work for the government in "make-work" projects is going to insure our economic future.  And where will all these "workers" go when their "work" is completed?

Thanks bt...

ucw posted that a few of the videos were not working. Hopefully I have it fixed now. I too encourage people to watch these vids as they are an excellent learning tool, and maybe we can keep history from repeating itself.

It is exactly like you say...we know sadly what this country was, and what all was fought for to not become the way the leftists have worked hard to achieve with their communistic agenda, it is now the grandchildren and future generations that I worry about that think this is just the normal way of life if this socialism continues.

I am not minimizing that is hurting us too for the rest of our lives either..this is hurting our very soul of what this country was founded on..and all those past and present who have fought and  shed blood to ensure that our freedoms and greatness continues.

Economic problems will cause many lost jobs.  So he's ("he" aint gonna do jack) going to "create" government jobs and then brag about it.  Fine, Stalin created jobs too.  Chew on that.  The montra of "creating jobs" is no different than the montra of "change."  Change, for the sake of change, means nothing.  And creating jobs, in and of itself means nothing.  Tell me WHAT the change is, and tell me WHAT jobs you are talking about creating, Messiah Obama.  And if "change" means bigger government, and "creating jobs" is part of that change, and are government jobs, spare me your worthless and fake concern.

 We got very little info about "change" now we'll get very little on "job creation."

If we lose 2.5 million private sector jobs, then create 2.5 million government jobs, we are heading down a losing path.

Great, just what we need. More road construction, traffic james and delayed public works projects. How many times does a road need to be repaved anyways? 

I admit some bridges need replacing and we need a major infusion in public transportation (railroad) but really, more public works? How depressing.

So, how is the messiah gonna save manufacturing? Other than have the government take over the plants?

This was prophesied in the Bible. It's the New World Order slave society. The more workers who work for the government, the more that government stays in power. That's what this is about: raw power. It is the easiest way to destroy free enterprise, business ownership, and small businesses, etc. Eventually, even those who voted for the O will regret putting him in power, but he will blame us for their misery.

Watch for tapping of phone lines and no security on the internet. Watch for the destruction of free speech and death to those who even mention their ethnic heritage. Watch for a total change in how we relate to each other . . . We just became a one-party socialist nation and we may never come back without a fight. Well, God said it would be this way. Dr. James W. Just 10 years ago I would have shrugged off what you typed Jill as just looney talk. Not even during Clinton did I get this type of chill running through my bones. (Clinton I found more of a joke anyways.) But seeing how the media has become this entity that's sole purpose is to trun the USA into a socialist country, how the media has gravitated around a man with a mysterious past, I would have to conclude that there really is something brewing.

Jackie – The media is definitely complicit in this hyperbolic narrative on the economy as well as the misinformation about the Great Depression. By doing so they are doing a disservice to their readers and viewers.

They are also doing a disservice to their employer. The media makes their money on advertising dollars and companies have been making major cuts in their ad budgets based on what they read and hear about the economy. By printing misleading headlines that this economy is the worst since the Great Depression and that there could be another one, they are telegraphing their revenue source to cut their budgets drastically.

I am not certain if the media are socialist or just stupid. Whatever their core beliefs, they have a vested interest in making sure Obama is successful even if it means continuing their flagrant propaganda and lies - and even if it means their employer loses money (and they lose their jobs - funny how that works).

Concerning Obama, the diarist is right that these are government jobs and this is a socialist agenda. Joe the Plumber was right and we could not be headed into a depression of Obama has his way and makes a New Deal II.

Your post is a really, really good catch. I hadn't thought it through and thought it would be government-subsidized venture funding. But more likely than not, it will be straight public-works New Deal stuff which did nothing to get us out of the Great Depression, and won't help us get out of this downturn.

Yep, the media is whacked. But it's more than that. I haven't felt dread like this since the weeks prior to 9/11. I had a dream about 9/11 before it happened. Repeating dreams about a flood and NYC. I'm having wierd dreams again but I can't remember them. I'm also having the same gut feeling that I had before the attack. Like a knot in my stomach. Except maginfied by 1000. I even dreamed about the space shuttle Challenger exploding before it happened when I was a kid. I've learned to trust it. I'm getting one word repeating over and over again. WAR. I do not know with who, why or when. I'm pretty sure Obama is the key to triggering it. 

I'm no expert in any subjects. I'm not the most religious person either. I'm just a mom and housewife. But right now Obama scares me and the more I read the worse he sounds. I remember praying to god to let McCain win and I never prayed for an election before. 

And yes, clear thinker--I have been to your blog and even booked marked it. It's very good.  Keep it going as long as you can.

Only the private sector and the free market can ever create jobs. Government jobs are "created" at the expense of the tax payer and capital that could have been invested in something the economy actually needs thus creating REAL jobs.
