Yes, it was Chris Matthews:
"I think the Hillary appeal has always been about the mix of toughness and sympathy. Let's not forget, and I'll be brutal, the reason she's a US Senator, the reason she's a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front runner, is that her husband messed around...That's how she got to be a Senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win it on her merit, she won because everybody felt, 'My God, this woman stood up under humiliation,' right? That's what happened. That's how it happened. In 1998, she went to NY and campaigned for Chuck Schumer as almost like the grieving widow of absurdity, and she did it so well and courageously. But it was about the humilation of Bill Clinton."
I don't think I have ever seen such a harsh analysis of Hillary Clinton. Not from Sean Hannity. Not from Bill O'Reilly.

Could the media be turning
January 9, 2008 - 15:50 ET by Chris NormanCould the media be turning on Hillary?
I'm uncertain whether Matthews was ever a big Hillary supporter. Was he?

January 9, 2008 - 15:59 ET by Gary HallFirst my comment on Kathleen's post. Wow!
Now. Matthews, for all of his gift of gab, is simply a bit nuts - and always rude to his guests. He asks rapid fire questions, and then answers them all himself.
This, a parallel to your comment, just keeps popping up in my head. Matthews has been all over the place with Hillary - and for many months now. I suspect that one could find 20-30 clips, some of them are fawning all over Hillary, and some of them are like this one - laying out the truth. Interesting stuff, indeed. (:~> gary

bi-polar
January 9, 2008 - 16:11 ET by Gary HallHa! I actually thought of saying that - then got off track. Very good analysis. Politically bi-polar.
Very nice!!

If I were ever invited on Spitball I would be sure to have a mirror up my sleeve, and as soon as Matthews started this asinine "interview tactic" he seems to have perfected, I would pull out the mirror and hold it up infront of his fat face ... urging him to continue. Because he sure as heck didn't need me there.
Chris... Was Matthews
January 9, 2008 - 16:15 ET by JerChris...
Was Matthews ever a big Hillary supporter?
In a word...No! Although, out of the [probable] thousands of Clinton references made by Matthews over the years, I am sure there are some which could be properly construed as favorable. But, on the whole, he has been decidedly negative toward both Clintons.
He also acknowledges voting for George W. Bush for president at least once.

January 9, 2008 - 15:52 ET by lotrI think Matthews actually has a valid point here (although he probably doesn't like Hillary because she ain't liberal enough).
War Vote
January 9, 2008 - 23:48 ET by Jerry MackThe final straw for Matthews was Hillary refusing to apoligize for her Iraq war vote.
Ah yes, that makes sense.

January 10, 2008 - 10:24 ET by JerIt may make sense to some, but I highly doubt it's even one of the many straws in play.
Matthews is less liberal than Hillary, and a long-time critic of the Clintons. Once again, he acknowledges voting for GWB "at least once".

I thought Matthews was
January 10, 2008 - 12:47 ET by lotrI thought Matthews was stridently anti-Iraq-war and now stridently anti-Bush. And also anti-conservative. I got the impression he was anti-Hillary because of her more hawkish voting record and campaign promises over the likes of Edwards and Obama (one of the few issues that distinguishes her slightly from them). I would be very glad to find out I'm wrong on this, though.
Matthews slobbers all over Obama.
January 9, 2008 - 15:55 ET by Missouri ConservativeCrissy practically thinks Barack is the Second Coming. He doesn't like Hillary because he knows that she can't win and Matthews (along with the rest of the media) really wants a Democrat to win the White House.

Hardball
January 9, 2008 - 15:57 ET by MikeknaJAs a longtime regular view of Hardball I have to say that for all the grief Matthews takes on this site, he actually calls it like it is more often than not - which is why liberal sites, like Crooks & Liars, hate him as well. Certainly his leftward tendancies come out a lot, but instances like the above are not the rare exception to the rule. He's hard on liberals when he feels they deserve it. He was very hard on the Clintons during certain times of his presidency.
I think Matthews' biggest fault is that he's got his pet peeves and he'll latch onto them and almost drive them into oblivion (like Scooter Libby or the fact that Mike Huckabee is named Mike "Huckabee", etc.) when there is not real substance there. You saw this at the early Republican debate, when many of his questions weren't truly important and were shaded towards some of his personal tendancies and interests.

The media was never for Hillary
January 9, 2008 - 15:59 ET by Lame CherryThe question is not in the correct form as the media which is controlled by the Rockefeller cartel in the stories and candidates it pushes has only been for "what they are told to be for".
Hillary was an appendage of their picked globalist son Bill Clinton. Her senatorial position was payback for the Clinton regime funnelling billions out of Saddam into banking coffers.
Hillary simply won the seat because the alternative was a Republican.
So the media has never been for Hillary. They just were trained to keep their hands off her as she was chiseling the Bush Administration which the cartel was furious over as Al Gore was supposed to be president.
The cartel runs a great deal of the world, but they still mess up in loosing to Bush but make him pay in other ways to get him on board.
Hillary though is off board. Matthews is auditioning for his role as White House Press Secretary and with Edwards has been the thrust of the Hillary public coup.
I blogged here last night that people have to LISTEN to Hillary in the sound of her voice in speeches. As she was not very pleased last night in winning. Her voice was troubled at winning as she knows she is not the chosen candidate and that the cartel will sink her if she wins too much.
She was given the later primary states like Michigan to save face in the "legacy", but that was in exchange for her loosing so all the criminal action would not be filed on her.

Pining for the '90's
January 9, 2008 - 15:59 ET by CaringwhiteguyChris Matthews was mildly entertaining during the build-up to and actual impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton. One could sense then he felt no special "kinship" with the Clintons. Maybe the poor guy is just feeling a bit nostalgic for those days when he had a marginally decent program.
The Truth Hurts
January 9, 2008 - 16:06 ET by BourbeauThe MSM has treated the Clintons (particularly Hillary) with unabated fawning adulation for years, despite their slimey history. They sit there shocked that anyone (e.g Russert, Matthews, etc.) would dare ask her or him a difficult question. Then, after being placed on a pedestal, they act with indignation that somehow she, a candidate for President no less, is being treated unfairly. What man, running for President, would we tolerate this nonsense from. Enter Chris Matthews with his diatribe, for which you can't say it didn't hit the nail right on the head. What did he say that was inaccurate, or incorrect? Memo to the press: White House papers still under lock and key; travelgate; library donations; conflicts of interest with foreign countries. She's running for President of the US and Chris Matthews and the press have every right to vett her, and recount her history and emergence from first lady, to carpet bagger senator, and now as presidential candidate even thru her tears and phoney emotional outbursts.

HA! This summarizes Matthews perfectly! He loves this cocktail-party talk and political gamesmanship. Chris is like the female Maureen Dowd (did you notice how Dowd skewered Hillary in the NYT this morning?). The Clintons are the master Macchiavillians and Hillary is so cold and calculating that even her friends don't like her.
Matthew's best ratings days were in the heights of Monicagate and he milked that one (sorry for the bad pun) for all it was worth ...

January 9, 2008 - 16:28 ET by motherbeltBut it was about the humilation of Bill Clinton."
No, it was about humiliation BY Bill Clinton. If ever there was a "pity vote" that was it.
If HRC hadn't married Clinton and gone to Arkansas, she would probably now be a Department Chair at Wellesley and President of that national association for Women Professors (name escapes me).
I doubt she would have made it very far as a lawyer; she would have switched to academia.
Could the media be turning on Hillary??
January 9, 2008 - 16:45 ET by PrairieSkyI cannot believe it-I cannot believe those comments came from Chris Matthews...He was 100% correct of course, but the fact that that statement came from such a staunch member of the leftwing media is astonishing. It makes me wonder how many others in the press are out there who also know the truth about Hillary, but would die first before they ever admitted it.

January 9, 2008 - 17:30 ET by KeithGreat post Kathleen! I'm still pinching myself! I used to hear Matthews say some quasi-flattering things about her but as soon as she began her presidential run, he got out the long knives. Although, none have been as long and sharp as the one used today! I just loved it!
The Clintons are good
January 9, 2008 - 17:37 ET by charlietexasThe Clintons are good actors. She only appeared to be the
humilated wife. she was used to his girlfriends and he was used
to her girlfriends as well. She played the part very nicely. Bill
played his part good too. The husband with his head held low,
clutching his bible, holding hands with Chelsea and Hillary on the
other side. GIVE ME A BREAK. The people that voted for her
in New York deserve what they got. A senator that does nothing,
unemployment high crime high, cost of living toooo high. Cry me a

The media loves Clinton
January 9, 2008 - 17:38 ET by RMRNo the media isn’t turning on Hilary, but it’s obvious that Chris Matthews have fallen quite hard for Obama.
Speaking of turning, check out the vicious attack on Chris Matthews and MSNBC now being carried out by Clinton supporters via YouTube.
Lib-on-lib death match is such a beautiful thing.
BRAVO Chris . Tell the truth
January 9, 2008 - 17:40 ET by docbBRAVO Chris . Tell the truth and it may begin to set us free.
Let's see the coverage of --her FALSE direct mail piece about Obama and partial birth abortion--their FALSE rumour of a Fed lobbyist who happens to be only a state lobbyist--where is the exposure of her slam of MLK, Bill's invective[ public and private] of Obama. How about manditory sentencing for crack and her flip flop. AF communtiy would be outraged that once again the clinton's betrayed them.
Who is really coddled -- not clinton

January 9, 2008 - 18:17 ET by Captain RepusMatthews was never a hard-line Clinton supporter but when he and all the other third-string mouths on MSDNC got their marching orders from Tim Russert after the Clintons scoured him for asking an unscripted debate question the anti-Clinton machine got started.
Now NBC and MSDNC are in panic mode with the realization that the Clintons may in fact get to re-slime the White House.
I did not read your post
January 9, 2008 - 18:57 ET by stratmanI did not read your post until after posting mine.
I obviously agree that was the seminal moment (pun intended) in the media's shift in treatment for Hillbillary.
Killing them with kindness isn't working. Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.
The media turned on Hillary
January 9, 2008 - 18:54 ET by stratmanThe media turned on Hillary when she/her campaign people launched an attack on Tim Russert after he dared ask her Royal Thighness one itsy-bitsy actual question of journalistic integrity: Driver Licenses For Illegals.
Hillary bit the hand of those that fed her oatmeal to the masses and the MSM responded with a vengence. Her loss in Iowa was the crowning achievement of the MSM's retaliation, showing Ms. Clinton they control the vertical and the horizontal as in the famous intro th the old tv show The Outer Limits. Now that Hill has been punished, the MSM returned to her side and promoted her "softer side" and qualifications (??) for the New Hampshire primary. She subsequently took New Hampshire in part due to the MSM bounce.
Of course there will be holdouts, like this quote from Chrissy Matthews shows. But eventually, he too will rejoin the fold and march lockstep with the Clinton's... unless the citizen's demand BO as the annointed one. Regardless, Matthews and the rest of his ilk will attach their wagons securely and subjectively to the Democrat candidate and fight the Republicans to the finish line.
Never expect an evenhanded treatment of the two parties in the media.
Killing them with kindness isn't working. Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.
i do think the media is turning on hillary
January 10, 2008 - 11:21 ET by pmohbucki think it is because the MSM consensus is that she cannot win the general election, but obama possibly could ... i think their coverage is nothing more than a grand scheme to get the most electable person as the democrat candidate ... and with all the gentle coverage of huckabee ... they aim to sway republicans into nominating a beatable candidate.
